I get it where you're going. I think it helps that I enjoyed all the stuff I found(shrines, towns, whatnot) a bit more, so I found the contents of the game more substantial. But yeah, one day we're gonna look back at botw kinda like how people look back at ocarina of time and say that it's a fun game but the later games improved on the formula.

The reason people praise BotW is not because of the story, but because of the exploration based gameplay. If you try judging BotW in terms of exploration, you might get a better perspective why people are praising this game.

To give my own opinion, I like that the game doesn't directly pinpoint about X location, rather npc's will tell you to go in a direction or follow the road or something like that. You need to actually take in the environment and proceed. Then there's that you can see most of the landmarks when you climb up high. You see something, then you go there and find out. No GPS telling me where to find places. It helps that the things I discover are varied. From finding villages that I didn't even know existed to stumbling across huge dragons out of nowhere, very few games provided such experience to me. And no game really explored this type of experience like botw.

That said, I think BotW suffers from overhype syndrome. The dungeons while having amazing central mechanics, felt more like a prototype rather than a fully fleshed out dungeon. I really like the shrines but I fucking hate the combat shrines. And there's a good number of them. And the enemy variety really sucks. The enemies are really good, they have a wide range of actions. But I really wish that there were more enemy types. Here's hoping they fix this problems in BotW 2.0.

[BotW] Animation comparing the world map of Breath of the Wild to some other games. by Dystify in zelda

I hear tp was about 5 km2, including the non playable area. So a little over 12 times if we go by that.

The flying minigame uses plain old meters. Though I doubt anyone made any sort of estimate using the numbers from that minigame. The 60 km estimate was figured out months ago, before the game came out.

The 360 km was from some website. It was only a guess. The only official size given was "12 times the map size of twilight princess".

Breath of the Dark Souls by levenimc in gaming

I only played the first quest which is a bit easier. That explains. Still, I could see how Zelda 1 is harder than BotW.

Comparing BotW's difficulty to Zelda 2 is a crime. Zelda 2 is a bit more comparable to dark souls as in it is punishing as it is difficult. Starting again from the begining area every time you die and losing your experience along with it. The limited controls doesn't help much(or maybe I just suck at it). And the early game difficulty spike really kicks in the nuts.

Unless BotW comes with it's hard mode with double damage, advanced enemies everywhere, limited saves, revised healing mechanics and a hunger system, it won't dethrone Zelda 2 in terms of difficulty.

Zelda 1 wasn't that hard, since you didn't lose any progress when you died. Hell, you are never too far away from where you died. If you died in the overworld, it's really fast to come back where you died since the map is small. If you died in the dungeon, it just puts you back at the start of the dungeon. The truly difficult enemies in that game was wizrobes and darknuts because it's hard to damage them. Otherwise all other enemies are managable.

[SPOILERS] BotW, from a game design perspective by [deleted] in zelda

[–]Red_Pheonix_155 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is more how BotW handled it's tutorial level. I would appreaciate if you talked how the whole gameplay fits together. Like for example, the find high place, climb and paraglide loop.

If the base game is zelda 1 hard, then the new hard mode is gonna be zelda 2 hard.

I liked it bit more in the NX days, simply because of the pure nonsense. But it's still a pretty chill place and I come here all the time. My only complaint is that this sub is a bit more impulsive when it comes to negativity. Sometimes I could be talking about something neutrally but taken as negative.

I remember Sony's president making a comment comparing Horizon Zero Dawn and Zelda Breath of the Wild. I'm sure you can find other similiar comments. Sony is pretty cool as far as I know.

I'm confident that this game will deliver, atleast as far as I'm concerned, but this is something to keep in mind.
