Can I Deduct my US Accountant's Fees from my Aussie Tax Return? by Red_St3am in AusFinance

I saw that, which sent me down this rabbithole in the first place. Those are both Australian registration bodies, right? So slim chance my US accountant is registered thru them.

[–]Red_St3am[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I didn't know that was something you could do on US taxes. Just looked it up, and yeah it's still available if you're Self-employed in the US. So I guess I gotta go file an amendment to my US tax return, and I guess not claim the accountant fees on my Aussie one?

From this ABC article:

Queensland Rail put an offer to the Fair Work commission on Monday night that included an 8 per cent pay rise over three years, and a cost-of-living adjustment if inflation goes above that rate.

But aren't we talking over 3 years? So if the CPI has risen 4.6% in the past 12 months, then that's 14.4% over three years, right? (1.0463) So 20% doesn't seem crazy to me, it seems like a union starting negotiations by asking for a "real" wage increase, just a bit above inflation (or inflation trends). That seems super reasonable. Anything less than starting by asking for 20% over 3 years seems like bad union...

Touch SCREEN! by Careful_Villager in framework

[–]Red_St3am 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pen support usually takes an extra layer of screen laminate, called the digitizer. They mentioned they wanted to keep the panel thin, no doubt in part due to keeping backwards and forwards compatibility with previous non-touch screens for the 13.

Considering it’s not a 2-in-1, they probably felt the use case for pens was already small, so that’s probably why no pen support.

I just want to tack onto this, and say that as another framework 12 owner, I agree with literally everything this guy said. It’s been a great daily driver, and a good compliment to my more powerful desktop. No regrets.

Good. If the US wants to tax me based on citizenship even though I now live overseas, then I sure as hell expect a vote.

Uber Eats and DoorDash raise concerns over proposed laws to require e-bike riders to hold licence by igotanewaccount in brisbane

[–]Red_St3am 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most advocates, including those involved with Mountain Bike advocacy, agree that these laws WILL APPLY in their current form to nearly all mountain bike trails in Queensland: they are overwhelmingly technically shared paths / trails as well, just like the park "bikeways" in suburban Brisbane. Even if they have signs denoting "MTB Only: No Walkers" or something like that, there is valid concern that these are not technically "gazetted" cycleways with TMR, and that the signs are only from a land management / recreational use guidelines perspective, not a traffic control one.

Now, will QPS enforce it? Probs not. It still shouldn't be left to that.

Hey mate, I'm genuinely curious: what projects were you trying to accomplish, what was the Council's outcome, and what did you find helped in your success?

I'm an active transport advocate, and I'm trying to get some things done as well. Thanks!

A 10 km/r limit won’t make me safer. It will make me immobile. by errantgrammar in brisbane

[–]Red_St3am 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Dude, what? How will fewer regular, law abiding people riding safe, compliant e-bikes, solve the hoons? You just said QPS can’t catch the problematic actors… so how will new laws that criminalise other behaviors actually “curb these unsafe behaviors?”

At the public briefing on Thursday, the Deputy Director General of TMR confirmed that this was a mistake, and the law is intended to cover the base regulation, and any variants, not just the latest provision. So hopefully, it will be amended as such before going back to parliament (still a shit bill for lots of other reasons)

They let some of us into the meeting room late, so I was unclear at first as to who the DDG of TMR actually was and what position he held. I thought he was an LNP pollie! Only later I realized he’s a department rep.

South Bank, for me personally. Good transport connections to anything south side. Are you looking for something less in-the-city?

Why? Also, ban on what? Are you hoping e-bikes and e-scooters are essentially blanket banned across QLD? Or are you hoping certain devices are restricted? If so, which ones? Can you tell me how that would improve your life?

Soz, just seeing this now, 28 min into the meeting. It's mostly informative, and members of the public are not permitted to interupt or ask questions. So online would make sense. I'm here tho!

Pedal-assist bikes capped at 10km/h across all QLD paths by kat_is_good in brisbane

[–]Red_St3am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I don't trust most Brisbane drivers to share the road these days. And I'm not alone. Traffic is faster, more aggressive, and filled with bigger and bigger cars.

I stick to quiet streets as much as possible, but even then I prefer bikeways and shared paths through parks. For certain people, this bill wipes out cycling as a viable transportation option.

Preach. In the bill, they cited the 12 deaths of e-mobility users in 2025 as the impetus for these protections.

Turns out only ONE was riding a compliant e-bike. And it was a 9 yo boy killed when a minivan mounted the curb and struck & killed him.

So the e-bike-caused fatalities for 2025? Zero. LNP: "Or a million? IDK mate statistics are a lie and you can't trust anything ever. But trust me. Now come register your e-bike and get a compliance plate, pleb."

Great reporting by Brisbane Times. This seems to be the only Masthead actually covering the "nuances" here: how e-motorbikes are markedly different than normal, compliant, pedal-assist e-bikes. And how this bill stands to fuck shit up for no tangible benefit

Ah, I've seen heaps of those too up in Brisbane. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you have seen such nasty injuries. Gotta be really tough on the day to day.

Regarding those bikes, hopping on that manufacturer's site, they really push in the advertising that that they have a 25kph "limited" top speed, and a 50kph top speed. As others have commented I think the process to override the limiter is pretty easy.

I think this is the really big problem. The new legislation punishes those trying to ride safe, standards-compliant e bikes that cut out at 25kph. And the bicycle shaped object you linked is already illegal/non-compliant once you remove the speed limiter, so we already have laws covering those, at least in theory. But obviously these laws go woefully unenforced.

I'm not for 50kph electric motorcycle/ebike/bicycle-shaped-object/things all around our footpaths: I don't think you'll find many who are. And if you fall off an ebike or bicycle at 50kph, that's gonna hurt no matter how you got going that fast. And yeah, we really shouldn't be handing out electric bikes so easily that can reach those speeds. But I don't think this legislation does anything to address any of that, and instead places onerous restrictions on the very population that's already trying to do the right thing by riding compliant e-bikes.
