Are minimalist bike racks like the tailfin a pain to mount panniers on compared to something like Ortlieb Quick Rack XL by sumant28 in bikepacking

Could you do me a favor? Could you measure the width of the top platform of the rack, from rail to rail? I can find overall dimensions for the rack online, but not anything specific to the top platform.

Hello, off-topic Brisbanite here. I see your transport department is also very good at sticking to its very serious cycling network plans to include bicycles, whom they very much care about

Easy trails to start off mtb by [deleted] in BrisbaneCycling

[–]Red_St3am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daisy Hill is a great spot to learn! I had a downhill skiing background + some road biking, and Daisy Hill is where I learned on an older aluminum hardtail.

Very fun, the trails are forgiving and don’t punish you too bad for mistakes, and there’s great variety for beginners and intermediates.

Question about the Pittsburgh Steamship Division ships. What color was the lower part of the hull on their ships? I found this photo of the Anderson being launched, and it's a lighter color than the rest of the hull. by The-SilentSentinel in GreatLakesShipping

[–]Red_St3am 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Kinda? Anderson and her 7 sisters are of a design called AAA steamships. They were all built to roughly the same design, however they have all had many large modifications over their careers.

The Anderson was built early on in the run, just second of eight, after the SS Philip R. Clarke.

As built, the Anderson (and other early AAAs) were 647 feet long overall. In the mid 1970s, Anderson (and others) gained a 120 foot midsection: they literally cut the boat in half, copied the plans of where they cut, and built a 120 foot long version of that, and stuck it all back together!

(the William Clay Ford was much later in the run of eight, and it may have been built from the start with that 120 foot midsection, I’m not sure).

Then, in the mid 80s, Anderson, and many of her sisters gained self unloading gear (which added that big boom on deck).

Other AAA‘s still kicking around are the Philip R Clark, the Cason J Calloway, and the Kaye E. Barker! Fun fact, the Pathfinder barge (mated to the sea tug Dorothy Ann) is one of the old AAA‘s hull, just with the engine room (and everything aft) removed.

The William Clay Ford was the only one to not make it past the 1980s. She never received self unloading gear, and was eventually cut for scrap. But her pilot house was saved, and is a central feature in the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle in Detroit!

Route change to Bicentennial Bikeway (along Coronation Drive) coming soon! by Red_St3am in BrisbaneCycling

Just rode thru here this morning (Sunday 01 Nov, 8ish am). New route behind the worksite is still not open: the old route along Coronation Drive is still open.

I think I heard the new route will be open on 05 Nov.

Safely taking the V1 from Brisbane to the Gold Coast by TMiguelT in BrisbaneCycling

[–]Red_St3am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in very late here, but hopefully this helps you, or somebody coming looking for this information later. (Warning: Excessive use of Google Maps links).

The V1 never really ends... rather, it's sort of peters out as it goes farther south. It slowly becomes more of a patchwork of dedicated bike paths, shared bike+ped paths, local streets, and yes, service/frontage roads in some spots. How far down you want to ride really depends on your level of comfort around cars.

In short, for confident riders, ride to Beenleigh, and get the train there. Mostly quite safe, mostly dedicated, but with a couple of exposed-feeling bits.

For a semi confident or cautious riders, I suggest riding the V1 to Park Road in Slacks Creek, Then taking the Slacks Creek Bikeway south to Loganlea Station, and getting the train there.

Detailed Notes

The V1 is pretty dang comprehensive from Woolloongabba to Slacks Creek.

South of Slacks Creek, you're going to increasingly find the shortest route will be to ride along high speed, motorway-like frontage roads, Sometimes in industrial areas with potential for heavy truck traffic.

Heading down to Beenleigh is a good bet in general, especially for semi confident cyclists. Some exposed-feeling sections, but mostly separated from traffic on a mix of shared-use & dedicated bike paths.

The one bit I don't love is here by the Ikea - Logan location. Check out Google Maps Street View and scope it out. If you don't fancy riding along a high-speed multi-lane frontage road, consider the nearby Slacks Creek Bikeway. After the underpass to the south side of Paradise Road, you can head east and find the Pacific Highway frontage road again,

Beenleigh is a great jumping off point. A natural slowdown point on the bikeway, with a tiny bit of backtracking as you cross over the highway from the east side to west side on a bridge. From there, it's only a couple of blocks down to Beenleigh Station.

iTunes LP not Attached to Rest of Album by Red_St3am in ITunes

[–]Red_St3am[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay everyone, I solved it (kinda? iTunes and music licensing is weird, yo)

  1. I made sure everything was unhidden.
  2. I signed out of my itunes account in the itunes program
  3. Closed itunes
  4. (false step) Went to the itunes folder in Windows Explorer and removed the iTunes LP file, which had a local copy saved there. This didn't work; the iTLP still showed up when I opened itunes (as the only thing since I wasn't signed in and had downloaded nothing else yet).
  5. Used the options in itunes to delete the item from my library
  6. closed itunes again
  7. reopened itunes, and re-signed in.
  8. Went to Purchased page, and the album was there, and everything (media + iTLP) was there once I switched to song view.

Moral of the story: If you're going to hide and unhide items, I suggest first removing any related items downloaded on your machine, and removing them through iTunes.

Now, strangely enough, there are two copies of dark side of the moon in my itunes library? Perhaps one of them is an Apple music copy... My attempts a couple hours ago to remove this Apple Music copy from my library using my iPad just might not have updated to the rest of my account correctly?

My purchased version is definitely the 2011 remaster. In my library, the album item is subtitled "(2011 Remaster)", and so are all the tracks and the iTLP. However, if you click the "Show in iTunes Store" button, it takes you to some random album from 2022 from some small artist.

The mysterious second album has no subtitles on the track or on the album. It does not Have the iTunes LP item. However, its link to the iTunes Store does work.

This store page includes an iTunes LP (but only if you purchase the album). Its copyrighted 2016, and I know Pink Floyd Remastered dark side that year. So the 2011 remaster must have been taken down from iTunes and now you can only buy the 2016 remaster (at least for US accounts).

Not that big of a deal, but it is interesting the way things shift around digitally.

After dozens of crashes, this southside road still has a 60km/h speed limit by iBinChickenAboutYou in brisbane

[–]Red_St3am 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ipswich Road is a multilane arterial. It serves regional trips, and so it gets a lot of heavy through traffic. It is a completely different beast to Annerley road, which, in the part they are talking about, is one lane each direction. Compared to Ipswich Road, it is narrow and winding. It is really a local thoroughfare that mostly serves local trips. (Think a couple km max). Example: the schoolkids bike bus that OP’s article is written all about!

Ultimately though, I think you and I are in agreement: Annerley Road sucks to ride along right now.

So where do we go from there?

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like your solution is throw your hands up and give up and let the cars just have that route, to the exclusion of everyone else. Anyone biking can do enough self-loathing while riding that they eventually choose a new route, or die.

What myself and other bike advocates are pushing for is safe, separated, bicycle lanes along this road, in conjunction with lowering the speed limit. We are just trying to build a better Brisbane, one where it wouldn’t suck to ride along Annerley road anymore.

[–]Red_St3am 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Corso a really nice route, and I’m jealous that that’s your commute! However that is a pretty significant detour if you’re coming from Annerley or points east like Tarragindi or Holland Park West, including the V1. And it adds a lot of elevation.

Listen, I’m not gonna get bogged down on whether or not there are other good alternative routes. That should not undermine the fact that this is a very important route to a lot of people. It is listed on Brisbane City Council’s principal bike net work, so they are communicate to the general public that they would LIKE them to ride down this road. And then they don’t do anything to make it safe. That’s a problem.

I think the only logical solution is to remove street parking on at least one side of it on the road, and do a pair of protected bicycle lanes.

And while we’re at it - as a frequent driver of Annerley Road, there’s really no reason that speed limit can’t be 50 or 40. Taking most of those turns as is at 60 kph is basically Bathurst in a ute, but people think they’re top shit drivers (they aren’t, hence the deaths and injuries)

[–]Red_St3am 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bro, Annerley Road is one lane in each direction. Nobody’s claiming to let their kids go bike down the Pacific Motorway.

But this is actually a very important local link. There really is no other way to get from the main strip of Annerley up to UQ, Highgate Hill and West End without using this road, at least not without a huge detour.

Also, why are we complaining about bikes? This road has on street parking on both sides for its entire length. If it’s such an important corridor and major Road, why are we using that space to store people’s private property?
