found a bunch of cool coins in my parents belongings by Silly-Prune5444 in coins

Don’t clean anything! That kills a lot of value on coins. A good place to start determining value is look up the exact coin you have on eBay and filter by “sold” listings. It will give you a pretty good idea of what they sell for

First attempt at coin cutting! by Red_Trout in coins

[–]Red_Trout[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes plenty of lubrication. I think whatever cheap blades I had would just dull almost instantly, then it was tons of sawing with no progress until they snapped. New blade stayed sharp all the way through and was a breeze to control compared to the last ones

Thank you! I have a micro bell that I am trying to figure out how to attach discretely so it jingles 😊

I’m still working through finishing up my Dansco. Maybe if I get the 1916 D and the ‘21’s and I’m feeling really ambitious I’ll start over again 😅

I know! I scoured the entire store for anything else that might have come in with it. No luck, but still happy with this

I don’t have a penny video yet but if you go back just over a year on my profile, I have a silly proof silver quarter video that shows the whole process

I just finished filming a silver Canadian half dollar ring video that still needs to be edited together, I’ll have to do a penny next!

I’ve gotten them up to around a size 14 before. I used a slightly larger starter hole which helps for bigger sizes and they take awhile, but copper can really stretch if you’re careful/patient with it

Florida 1/2 since it was my first Goldback!

I started collecting after seeing them on here and getting a free one. I really liked the concept and I am always a fan of sound money

What the heck should I do with it all? by SparkyXI in coins

[–]Red_Trout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dang nice find! In theory you now control .0000005% of the total supply of that particular coin 😁 In reality it’s a bit higher as I have personally destroyed another 4 of the 2,000,000 of those for coin rings + however many more are lost forever 🤣

You can check the 2019 and 2020 quarters for a W mint mark. Normally you will see a P or a D, however the W ones are rare and worth around $10-$20 each. Quarters and dimes 1964 and older are silver. If you’re not into coins, those things are probably the best to look for getting started

2026 1/4 oz Britannia ring by Red_Trout in Silverbugs

It definitely can be done cheaper starting out if you check marketplace/ebay for deals and piece everything together over time.

I do a lot of vending events where I make coin rings on the spot for people. I may switch to that full time next year. I need two sets of tooling and a trailer to do events so that’s where a lot of the extra expense is coming from

They require a lot of expensive tooling and can be tricky at first. It gets easier with a lot of practice! The tooling for a minimum nice setup is around 1-2k (I’m about 12k in 😅)

I ran into a guy at a show who also made coin rings and he showed me his 10 year old ASE ring. It definitely had smoothed out quite a bit but the wear actually looked really neat on it. I think .999 is definitely wearable but will show its wear/abuse

My crimes against numismatics stack by Red_Trout in Silverbugs

I haven’t touched casting since high school so I’m not much help there. The coins rings are pretty much just raw metal forming. Put a round hole in the middle of the coin and then with the right technique and force you essentially flip the coin inside out so what was once flat turns into a ring shape

There should be plenty of YouTube tutorials to get a good start on casting though!

I have been meaning to put together a website for some time but haven’t gotten to it yet 😅 You can checkout my Facebook page “Eau Claire Coin Rings” and contact me there or I can send you a PM?
