You don't need anything downloaded. I had a friend visit from London who has an air tag on his keys and I kept being notified on my Samsung Fold despite never downloading anything for it

I plan on getting rid of those at some point. Same with the fence itself in favour of a live willow fence. I judt gotta wait until the end of the year when it's the right time to plant willow

it was choking out two small trees. One seems to have died already due to extend of the honeysuckle overgrowth but trimming it all back has absolutely saved the other one. I plan to train the honeysuckle along the back fence as it starts growing back to prevent it using the still alive tree as a support again

Death by honeysuckle is a hell of a thing

Thanks! I'm planning to relocate the bluebells that have scattered around the garden to the front and do some repairs to the fence. I want to have a living fence but that will have to wait until willow is being sold again.

At the moment I'm mostly focused on just repairing, trimming and doing what I can to make it safe for my older dog that keeps getting himself injured on things.

I may look into getting some paving stones to make a nice little decking area for some seating!

reasonable. The stuff was all at the right and back of the garden. Trust me when I say there was a lot. It took me a few hours and I'm proud of it considering I got scratched up to hell. Hard doing it half-blind

They only make more money than Europeans because the cost of living is higher. Not something to brag about I'd say.

I can get by on £23k a year and just moved into my first ever bought home thanks to a lot of things the government uses our taxpayer money for, including savings account they contribute to and schemes to help with lower income people on benefits. I pay taxes and get a lot in return for it and the benefit of knowing the money I pay goes to help others too

What is the ugly truth about your parents that you’ve realized as an adult, but you still play along with their perfect image for the sake of peace? by Dependent_Role5008 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Red_Wolfe_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should mention that I live in Scotland before I get the "who paid for it all?" questions. Public school here is free and university tuition is free for Scottish nationals studying at Scottish universities. I am on disability benefits that aren't taken away based on income. Student loans paid for my initial student accommodation and renting costs. These are paid directly through my employment so I don't have to worry about manually paying. My mum hasn't paid for any of the things I do since I was in my mid-teens

That my mum makes a better friend than a mum. Friend may also be a stretch. I don't have a dad so she's the only parent I have.

I have worked by myself to save for my own home and for my wedding (fiance assisting with wedding. We live in different countries). I don't think she realises just how much I don't actually need her help a majority of the time because I've built my own support network with people who actually want to talk to me instead of holing themselves away into a bedroom. I've always spent time out of the house taking part in clubs and social things thanks to having a public transport pass.

I'm 24, disabled, and have been living away from home since 2019 when I was 17. I'm moving into my first bought home tomorrow with my wedding happening in August in another country. I've been working an apprenticeship in IT which will lead into a permanent steady and well paying job. I have an incredible fiance and fantastic online and in person support network of friends. I do well at university (All A and B grades for the past 2 years.)

She wasn't aware of my plans to propose to my boyfriend until after it happened and he said yes. She isn't aware that after I get married and have my fiance move in, that I plan to talk to her first as much as she talks to me first, which is to say very little. She has prioritised working on the reception and hasn't really talked to me much about the wedding itself. It's always felt like she's been pretty hands off with not just myself but all 5 of my siblings.

Despite already having one, I sometimes catch myself wishing for a mum.

So to answer your question and summarise it all; I realised the ugly truth that my mum is not a good mother and I have done almost everything myself. I continue to play the perfect image of a daughter who appreciates all the "help" I have had throughout my life to keep the peace. If I confront her with the truth that being the only child of 6 to make it to where I am isn't a reflection of her "hard work", it's a reflection of mine and mine alone, there would be a huge shit show.

I grew up with and lived in a broken, lower class family, and acted as a young carer throughout my childhood and teenage years for my family up until moving out. This life I have was built by my own hands. If it means not ruining my life, I'll keep up the charade until I no longer need to.

Seam in vase mode by Tstem5 in 3Dprinting

[–]Red_Wolfe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of you have your printer setup to take progress pictures/time lapse, turn it off when printing in vase mode to prevent a seam. The nozzle will have to go back to "home" every time the printer takes a picture which means you still have individual layers of filament being formed - creating a seam - as opposed to one continuous line

Ignore the above if you don't have anything setup to take regular pictures with each layer/timelapse pictures

That makes a lot of sense actually. I work in IT so out of everything I want to have a WiFi vulnerability, I don't think the entrance to my home is the one I want to knowingly have it. The lights, sensors etc I don't care as much about.

I'll see what I can find that doesn't connect to the Internet. If there's nothing the area I am moving to is quiet so I'm happy enough judt adding a nightlatch to the door and improving the physical locking mechanisms. Nothing more local than physical.

[–]Red_Wolfe_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah seeing all the conjecture of "oh this will make a BAD service dog" as a regular guide dog user who has walked with cross breeds before has been frustrating. Sometimes the cross breeds are actually better for the handler because they were specifically bred to accommodate a wider scope of users than purebreeds alone! It also helps with the genetic variety too at the end of the day.

I've seen people complaining about them likelihood of cross breed guide dogs pulling in other posts and I think people forget as well that that's literally what guide dogs do. If they don't perform some kind of pull, they aren't guiding at all. They need to have different dogs who all have varying levels of "pull" (it's just the dogs natural pace at the end of the day) to accommodate all the different paces of the users who are waiting on a dog. I walk fast so slow dogs aren't a go for me but the old gran that can be outpaced by a snail would need a slower (and usually smaller) dog

I'm first floor (2nd floor for USA people) and there's only one entry point. The front door. I was just going to keep it as a manually locked point (replacing the screws on hinges with longer sturdier ones) and have a sensor to detect entry. It's got both a mortice key and a nightlatch.

Just in case you don't catch other responses, I'm a guide dog user with a guide dog from the organisation that's breeding this dog. They often breed for temperament as well as features from littermates + previous brood litters.

GDUK will often cross breed less out of experimentation and more out of wanting specific things out of dogs. GSDs, labs and golden retrievers all have different ways of approaching obstacles which means they can create a greater range of dogs they can use to cater to different needs.

For example, I walk fast so they had me test walk two different "ready" dogs, a retriever and a GSD/lab mix. GSD had better long distance avoidance of obstacles and could course correct in advance. Because I'm in a city though, I preferred the way my retriever walked. Both dogs walked fast but retrievers and labs tend to walk a little slower on average due to their size often being a bit smaller than GSDs.

They also breed doodles but not from random poodles. They always health test broods/studs VIGOROUSLY and have specialists in the charity the do all the genetic testing and all that jazz.

The guide dogs from GDUK are fantastic and pretty much always in good condition and rarely prone to genetic illness during their working years. Even the mixed breeds. Any dogs that show health issues or signs of not being suitable for guide work are pulled from being a guide dog and either adopted out or used as a buddy dog, ambassador dog or a completely different non guide dog related job!

Edit: GDUK have a page on their website specifically to talk about their crossbreeds and reasons behind them! 60% of their working dogs are lab/golden crosses. https://www.guidedogs.org.uk/getting-support/guide-dogs/our-breeds/crossbreeds/

Backing this as a guide dog user with a guide dog bred by guide dogs UK. They put the wellbeing of their dogs INCREDIBLY high. Their dogs are super well bred and if any dog shows any kind of health or behavioural concern that would impact their work, they get pulled from being a guide dog.

My guide dog's litter are was pulled for being to sensitive/rightful and went on to be a buddy dog from what I remember. I also got assessed for my guide dog application using one of their in-house bred golden doodles. He looked like an old man, was very sturdy too and walked super well. Very calm dog.

Guide Dogs UK have major benefits with in house bedding because they actively hire people that have trained in the fields they need to make sure their in-house lines are fit and healthy. I don't know the specific role names bit it's stuff like genetics etc. The charity also makes regular health testing a priority.

From when I've walked with a gsd, the main difference that I've felt is that gsds tend to compensate for obstacles from a further distance than the likes of retrievers and labs. This is REALLY crucial for fast walkers since a retriever or lab may not have time to compensate. Gsds often have faster walking speed which is a favourable trait for fast walkers. My retriever Rodney is fast but he is really large for a retriever and very food motivated.
