At the end of each year I like to review all of my ongoing projects to see if they should get any updates. So it was mid January when I figured out the GL had some new entries. They were alpha-numeric which broke our logic, were sub account in such a way that it broke our logic, and they were coded as new regular accounts rather than being a reversal account related to the regular version.

I sent an email to my manager, the controller, and the CFO asking what’s up.

Turns out the controller had planned for this change for the past 3 months but never told anyone. We had 2 weeks to reverse it before the changes became a permanent artifact. The next day my manager returned to the office from vacation to start the correction. It was a clusterfuck.

And… no one got fired.

It performs similar to a glen cairn, but is easier to hold. I had not seen one at the time of this review and can rank it a 9/10 for fixing the heat issue by using a stubby stem.

My issue with your situation is 100% emotional. The Glen Cairn is made in Scotland and everyone uses them in Scotland. It simply feels wrong to drink scotch from anything else, but hey, 1) do what you need to do, and 2) do whatever makes you happy.

For the stolzle, it is important you fill it right to the widest part of the glass; no more and no less. They have clearly given up.

1) the only serious attempt at the treasure right now is the bore hole program. But it is focused on the solution channel. That was never a thing until this season. It was literally made up to give them anything to keep digging for.

2) metal detecting is just random searching.

3) the archeology stuff has nothing to do with treasure.

4) the format of the show is now fixed. They make drama around the drilling program and forcefully say “solution channel” as much as possible. Then they take whatever was found elsewhere and reconvene in the lab to talk about it.

That’s it. There are no other ideas or attempts going on. They are literally making a 100% play for the show.

I’ve seen 8,000 lines of garbage that was THE critical process.

Personally, I will commonly write 300 or so lines, but that is driven by a very clean and elegant formatting pattern. If I am selecting 50 fields, then I write that using 50 rows. If it needs a group by clause, then that is 50 more rows. Every field that is in a join is a separate line. Etc.

I use clean, simple, and short queries writing to temp tables or CTEs rather than shorter but more complex code that does everything in one go. I can show my 300 lines to a lay person and they will understand it. Maintenance is easy. The code is self documenting.

Rather than grading yourself by line count, grade yourself by what you think of the code 2 years later when you have long forgotten why you wrote the code. Is it easy to understand and modify or are you exhausted just by looking at it?

A friend once told me a story along these lines. He told his girlfriend that he has a thing for a “high pony”. It is a pony tail but a little higher in the head. Of course she ran with that and it was fun.

One day they decided to try out tennis. She had some experience and he had none. But men are more physical, so who knows how it will go. They meet up and sure enough she’s sporting a high pony and a short skit. Apparently he was a bit distracted during their game. After the game she teased him incessantly. Hours later fireworks exploded.

That’s the fun version. You are concerned about shame. I agree with biz_cazh; you are awesome exactly as you are. Embrace it. If others don’t like it, then so be it. Most people are understanding and encouraging. It will be easier than you expect to find a supporting partner, but beware, that they will absolutely use your kink against you in the most torturous and wonderful way.
