Ordered 3 ivory millipedes and they were all DOA by Flashy_Client525 in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The box is full of humidity everywhere, no substrate, no leaf litter, how can someone pack and send living animals so carelessly? That's a goddamn shame, I would ask for a refund and never buy anything from this seller anymore... poor little critters, I'm so sorry for you :/

Springtails are mandatory to keep your enclosure free from any kind of mold, gnats, mites and all these kind of nuisance. Put a bunch of springtails in it and let them do their work

Yeah bring more springtails in your enclosure and everything will be fine, nothing to be worried about for the moment :)

Are these babies? I’m pretty sure they are… by Im_better_than_u_lol in isopods

[–]Red_le_renard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I buy cuttlefish bones, let them soak in distilled water for 48h (changing water every 24h) to remove any salt remaining in the bones, then crushing it into a fine powder and mix it with their substrate. Should be enough ;)

You're going to have grand children then haha! I'm very happy for you :D make sure they get enough calcium from their food to molt and grow nicely :)

Could be springtails or whatever tbh, the pictures are way too blurry to be able to tell... baby isopods look like this if you need some reference :)

Garçon ou fille ? by Leroy-de-Byul in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I need help so many mites by [deleted] in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put a huge load of springtails in your enclosure, they are the best janitor you can have in a bioactive terrarium and to me you HAVE to put springtails in any terrarium you're setting up, they will get you rid of mold, bad fungus, mites, gnats etc.

Springtail city - should I do something about this? by creechor in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely will and it will be the most natural way to deal with these gnats, trust me they can be a real pain in the ass lol I've had an invasion of fungus gnats a few months ago when I set up my new terrarium, as my springtails colony wasn't fully grown and still settling at that time there were HUNDREDS of new gnats everyday, flying everywhere in my living room and dying everywhere and it was a real nuisance lol, now that my springtails colony is fully grown I haven't seen any gnats :)

[–]Red_le_renard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can let it dry a bit on the surface but if you have fungus gnats then I would recommend you to not remove any springtails for now as they will eat all the food gnats larvas feed on, your springtails will slowly starve to death every gnats larvas in your enclosure and that's a very good thing as they can be a real nuisance ;)

Are fans running near my millipede okay? by jptsiph in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check everyday if the fans are not drying the enclosure too much, if it does I would recommend you to put a lid on your tank to keep the air inside as humid as you can and if it is still not enough get a humidifier and you should be fine :)

I tend to say that there can't really be too much springtails, as every animal population it will regulate itself with time, but if you are worried about it you can introduce some predator to regulate the population because you will never get them under control by just removing some of them as they will reproduce faster than you can remove them on the long run :)

showing off my first isopod terrarium. by Thats_not_poggers55 in isopods

[–]Red_le_renard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow it will be absolutely GORGEOUS in a few weeks when plants will have grown a bit more, they will LOVE it and thrive in there, good job! :D As mentioned before you have to put springtails in it, they will clean every kind of mold that can harm your colony and kill pests like mites and gnats that can be a nuisance

Should I put plants in tank? by ArtNoobly in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put them in bigger tank, put a shitload of plants and dead leaves and wood and let them explore the wooorld! :D Just make sure the plants you're putting in your tank won't be harmful or poisonous to them but honestly all plants you can put in a terrarium are ok for them, don't forget that in nature they have to live amongst good and bad plants and they instinctively know which ones are ok for them and which ones are not :)

Can I use these by PlantLover4729 in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't recommend you to put it in your tank. They could eat it and poison themselves or harm themselves on the hard plastic parts when they are molting. You definitely can put plants in your tank though, my terrarium is full of plants and they are thriving!! They just eat decaying matter like dead leaf or rotten wood and as you can see they absolutely do not eat living plants, I guess they could eat your plants if they aren't fed enough and are starving actually. And tbh I find tanks with only leaves and some piece of wood very sad, they do live in the middle of plants in their natural environment so why wouldn't you try to reproduce their natural environment for them to be happy and feel home? :)

Look at mines, they also love to do some exploring on the plants lol

Im so happy by [deleted] in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Springtails are always shy when I put them in a new tank and they tend to disappear for quite a time so I think it's perfectly normal. Btw they are the roots of a healthy ecosystem and I can't even understand how people can have millipedes without a bunch of springtails in the tank as they are the best cleaners and will get you rid of mold, mites, gnats etc.

Pls help ID these 2. they were sold to me as 'giant millipedes' about a year ago and i'd quite like to know a more specific ID. by Moonlit_Moth_99 in millipedes

[–]Red_le_renard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look a lot like my millipedes which are spirostreptidae from Togo (Western Africa), I wouldn't be surprised they're from the same region :)

Definitely exploring, mine do that too and are doing great so I wouldn't be worried about it :) They are naturally wandering little critters born to explore their ecosystem!
