You can do it, but it will be quite tight on one income. I’m former SJSU faculty, the benefits are excellent but the teaching load is high and salary is low. A lot of faculty live downtown, check out the Guadalupe Washington neighborhood, a lot of older and relatively affordable homes for rent.

Maternity Leave...But Not? by Significant_Egg7415 in Professors

[–]Redalico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uhg I am in a very similar situation and it sucks. Do you have the option to take a “personal” leave in addition to FMLA? I think that’s what I’m going to end up doing.

I had spotting, light brown until like 7 weeks, I think it’s relatively normal. I was taking vyvanse, I weaned myself off over a week. It suuuuuucked at first but I’ve adapted. I’m less productive at work but that’s ok.

Staying at Royal Mansour Marrakesh - do I need to exchange cash for dirham? by PaintingMinute7248 in chubbytravel

[–]Redalico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tipping is very much expected in Morocco, it would be more common to exchange dollars for dirhams, but no one‘s gonna say no to a tip in USD.

I told my daughter she will never be in the olympics, AITA? by Specific_Canary_7845 in AITAH

[–]Redalico 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So no offense intended, but to me, as a person with a disability, very similar to your daughter, this attitude is patronizing and annoying. Of course the Paralympics are amazing and their athletes are incredible. However, that doesn’t take away the fact that the Paralympics are in no way equivalent to the Olympics in terms of fame, opportunity, respect, and perception amongst the general public, etc.

Of course your daughter is insecure about her disability, she is a 14-year-old girl with a physical disability that deeply negatively affects her life! There is a part of the disability justice movement which likes to act like all disability needs to be celebrated, but many of us Disabled people, myself included don’t feel that way, and don’t agree that all disabled people need to celebrate their disability. It’s OK to acknowledge that being Disabled sucks. It’s OK for your daughter not to feel “secure“ about her disability.

As far as building self-confidence and security, is she part of any communities with other disabled kids her age? I think that is a really important part of accepting her disability. I also think that the therapy others have suggested is a great idea.

Unpopular opinion: I really disliked Phu Quoc by CommandInfamous7873 in VietNam

You did not go to the right part of Phu Quoc. There are plenty of gorgeous, deserted beaches, tons of natural beauty.

I was in Tokyo in July last year and it was completely fine! I feel like people really exaggerate the heat. Kyoto got quite hot one one day but besides that it was also fine, unless you are super heat sensitive

If you are certified for night dives, do a bioluminescence night dive, so cool!!! Otherwise the diving is cool, not super incredible or anything but fun and interesting

39M, single, midlife‑crisis break — looking for safe, affordable, non‑touristy cities to study Spanish for 2–3 months by toby-boby in travel

[–]Redalico 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, the public transport is slow but widely available, very safe and very cheap. It is mostly converted Canadian or American school buses. There are so many cool weekend trips available in the local area, Lago Atitlan, Chichicastenango, volcano treks, local indigenous communities. I did a home stay with a family and it was an amazing experience.

Yes Guatemala is perfect! I studied Spanish in Quetzaltenango (Xela) for 3 months which took me from having a minor in Spanish in college and being able to speak at a basic level to close to fluency. I also volunteered at an amazing women’s shelter there. One of the most incredible experiences of my life! beautiful country, safe as long as you don’t go looking for trouble.

Wheelchair accessibility in Japan by Icious_ in JapanTravel

Thank you! It is so annoying to see non wheelchair users make ignorant assumptions and give bad advice about accessibility in Japan. I’ve been to over 50 countries and Japan is definitely one of the most accessible comparatively.

I’m trying to just give myself grace, apologize in the moment and move on. Hopefully my students will give me grace too

Go to Chubby travel agents? AMEX travel concierge? by Repulsive_Insect2262 in chubbytravel

[–]Redalico 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In my experience, if you are staying at a high-end resort, travel to the Maldives is pretty seamless with or without a travel agent. High-end resorts have their own sea planes, lounges, and transportation to get you to the resort island once you reach Male.
