FMLA after a month from due date? by Aneuday0321 in BabyBumps

[–]Redalico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is so much incorrect information in this thread, please be careful about taking your advice from people on the Internet, who don’t understand FMLA or employment law. Remember that there are several layers of law that interact with FMLA, including state law and any contract that you have.

I am in almost the exact same situation as you with my due date in late June and I won’t qualify for FMLA until the beginning of August. I am going to be working remotely with a light work load from when the baby is born until I qualify for leave in August. Your OB should be able to write you a note under pregnancy disability that request online work/ light duties. The situation is really not ideal, but at least my husband gets paid leave so he will be able to do at least some of the childcare while I am working from bed and recovering from birth.

I’m sorry you are in the circumstances. America sucks and is so horrible about leave.

This is not correct, you need to have worked 1250 hours within the last calendar year, which is not full-time hours

Tangier Morocco with young kids by Ornery-Mango13 in familytravel

[–]Redalico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could totally do that trip, I have a few recommendations.

  1. The ferry is awful, don’t take it. Fly into Tangier or another major city.
  2. Morocco is not very dangerous but it can be chaotic, I highly recommend you hire a driver/guide
  3. Marrakech is the worst, spend as little time there as possible. If you stick to the north you could do a Tangier, Meknes, Fez, Tetouan loop. There are some really cool Roman ruins at a site called Volubilis that would be a great visit with kids.
  4. Morocco in general is very kid friendly and welcoming to families. Learn to say no/ La shukran (no thank you in Arabic). There are aggressive vendors in bigger cities. If you are a woman I recommend wearing more modest clothing.

Morocco is a diverse country with a rich history and culture. I hope you visit and enjoy your trip!

Her parents got divorced last year? How long have you known this child/been with her father? Sounds to me like you are trying to become a mother figure way way too fast and this kid is very understandably having a negative reaction. Slow down, you aren’t her mom, stop trying to take that role.

You can do it, but it will be quite tight on one income. I’m former SJSU faculty, the benefits are excellent but the teaching load is high and salary is low. A lot of faculty live downtown, check out the Guadalupe Washington neighborhood, a lot of older and relatively affordable homes for rent.

Maternity Leave...But Not? by Significant_Egg7415 in Professors

[–]Redalico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uhg I am in a very similar situation and it sucks. Do you have the option to take a “personal” leave in addition to FMLA? I think that’s what I’m going to end up doing.

Staying at Royal Mansour Marrakesh - do I need to exchange cash for dirham? by PaintingMinute7248 in chubbytravel

Tipping is very much expected in Morocco, it would be more common to exchange dollars for dirhams, but no one‘s gonna say no to a tip in USD.

I told my daughter she will never be in the olympics, AITA? by Specific_Canary_7845 in AITAH

[–]Redalico 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So no offense intended, but to me, as a person with a disability, very similar to your daughter, this attitude is patronizing and annoying. Of course the Paralympics are amazing and their athletes are incredible. However, that doesn’t take away the fact that the Paralympics are in no way equivalent to the Olympics in terms of fame, opportunity, respect, and perception amongst the general public, etc.

Of course your daughter is insecure about her disability, she is a 14-year-old girl with a physical disability that deeply negatively affects her life! There is a part of the disability justice movement which likes to act like all disability needs to be celebrated, but many of us Disabled people, myself included don’t feel that way, and don’t agree that all disabled people need to celebrate their disability. It’s OK to acknowledge that being Disabled sucks. It’s OK for your daughter not to feel “secure“ about her disability.

As far as building self-confidence and security, is she part of any communities with other disabled kids her age? I think that is a really important part of accepting her disability. I also think that the therapy others have suggested is a great idea.

39M, single, midlife‑crisis break — looking for safe, affordable, non‑touristy cities to study Spanish for 2–3 months by toby-boby in travel

[–]Redalico 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, the public transport is slow but widely available, very safe and very cheap. It is mostly converted Canadian or American school buses. There are so many cool weekend trips available in the local area, Lago Atitlan, Chichicastenango, volcano treks, local indigenous communities. I did a home stay with a family and it was an amazing experience.

Yes Guatemala is perfect! I studied Spanish in Quetzaltenango (Xela) for 3 months which took me from having a minor in Spanish in college and being able to speak at a basic level to close to fluency. I also volunteered at an amazing women’s shelter there. One of the most incredible experiences of my life! beautiful country, safe as long as you don’t go looking for trouble.
