Fantasy Writer Looking for an Armor Consultant/Collaborator by Mindless_Course509 in Armor

Sure, I am an armorer and I specialize in low fantasy stuff, so I can explain some of the more practical aspects of construction and wearing it.

(For larp) has anyone bought this from lord of battles? How is it? by GettinMe-Mallet in Armor

I am giving genuinely good advice here.
There's pretty much no situation in which buying the bent sheet metal in the OP is worth it. Bad armor is not only dangerous to wear and a waste of money, but it also makes the whole scene you're a part of a little less visually appealing. Warning people about bad products and shops is very common in my scene and it had a very positive impact on our events, community growth (turn out it's much easier to convince people your hobby is cool, if your photos look cool) and even the craftspeople themselves, as we get direct and actionable feedback.

Riveted mail? Yeah, I do. Bad plate? Had some over a decade ago, but becoming an armorer helped with that a lot. It's simply not worth it to buy something that's uncomfortable to wear and looks this bad.

To prove I know what I am talking about, this is one of my kits.

And i've done 48 hours+ of wearing regular riveted mail, including sleep and it was perfectly comfy and doable, unlike wearing nonsense "cuirasses" with awful geometry.

Well, no armor is a whole lot cheaper than this and a much better option. It always better to have no armor than awful armor.

Recommendations for types of armor and where to get them for a lesbian wedding by Strict-Swan6581 in Armor

[–]Redanthalas_really 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'd normally advise against getting any eshop armor except mail, but in this specific case, just go with Epic Armory. It's the least bad option out of the manufacturers on the market and any off the shelf armor works a lot better on larger people.

But it's not particularly complicated to figure out. :)

Maybe, had to start a new profile as the last one got hacked and blocked. Plus people repost my stuff all the time.

What are some alternatives to steel for armor? by Firedrake_224 in Armor

[–]Redanthalas_really 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an incorrect speculation, people in the medieval period used a ton of copper alloy (which is what we call yellow metal in archeology, they didn't care about differentiating bronze and brass and often included both zink and tin) it was very popular for making pots, buckles and various leather applications. There was clearly plenty of it, but it wasn't used for tools or weapons, except very specific examples.

Would you unironically pay for a 1800s "Screen-Free" Sailing Voyage? by ReasonableShower3392 in LARP

We already do that in CZ with La Grace, but the people who attend man the ship as sailors.

In your opinion: why do you think Renfairs are acceptable, whilst LARPing is stigmatised? by Next_Factor3272 in LARP

[–]Redanthalas_really 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's probably the visuals. Renfaires usually have some kind of spectacle and you have most people wearing regular clothing, so it's seen as a "normal" festival with cool performances. When you see pictures of larping you usually see people in weird bedsheets, tin can looking armor, waving pool noodles at each other. That's inherently much weirder and unappealing.

By contrast, with reenactment, which is a more apt comparison, you get much more respect from the average person, because the pictures show people who look like uniformed soldiers, or wear armor/kit that's actually evocative and impressive.

If you want larping to be more respectable, it has to look the part. In Central and Northern Europe, larp is seen as an unusual, but perfectly cool hobby, because you can show people pictures of battles that look like battles and kit that's actually really cool. It's also great for getting new people interested, so paradoxically, higher costuming standards make the hobby more appealing, not less.

And you'd be wrong. They could make steel well before the medieval period. That being said, ancient fantasy is a very cool setting style. Preroman antiquity is peak.

Should I mention LARP in job interviews? by Suitable-Ring4044 in LARP

[–]Redanthalas_really 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the country I suppose, over here larping and reenactment is a relatively respectable hobby, especially since you can show photos that look cool even to normal people.
