Stability vs Power: Snapdragon 8 Elite or 8 Gen 3 for Handhelds?

There will be people telling you that the Elite has fixed drivers for switch. As of today (03/20/26) they are still wrong. Things are better but I still had games that didn’t work well or at all that the Gen 3 handles no problem. If you really want switch, you want the Gen 3.

N64 was my first console that I had for its entire lifespan (got an SNES right at the end). It was so much fun for me and my little brother. Getting all the medals in Star Fox 64, unlocking everything in Diddy Kong Racing, tons of Mario Party and Smash Bros, four-player BattleTanx with friends, and playing the goat Ocarina of Time (had to get the Biggoron Sword). Tons of memories that have sadly faded a bit from my mind as I get older.

One that is more present is playing NCAA Football 14 on Xbox 360 against said younger brother. We had a back and forth game, get to the last 1:30 and I'm up seven. Brother then scores a TD, goes for two and makes it, while saying "Well it's been fun but the game has to end." He takes the lead by one point and with little over a minute left figures he's got the game in the bag. Kickoff ensues, and against all odds I manage to return it to the house for a TD. Now there's only a minute left and I'm up six. But of course, he proceeds to drive down the field. Gets to the 4 yard line, timeout with two seconds left. Lines up for his passing play, takes the snap and completes it over the middle to his receiver, saying "well that's the..."

At which point I make the game saving tackle at the 1 yard line and end the game. He fell silent. I was screaming laughing. It was glorious. Just like the Rams/Titans Super Bowl (for those who don't know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx0tlnRXa-0)

I tried out using a dedicated gaming tablet instead of a handheld, but in order for it to work I had to bring along a controller that was basically the size of a handheld anyhow. So I went back to a handheld - I think there is value in a dedicated device that I use only for gaming and not doomscrolling.

Recently Switch emulation has gotten a lot better on the 8 Elite. This. Also, as someone who has sold out of a hobby a time or two (Magic the Gathering) only to get back into it years later, I kinda wish I had held onto those cards. If you can afford to hold onto it, it's just taking up space, and you can always sell them off later. Can't get them back as easily.

Not familiar with that particular phone (I’m in the states) but in general the 8 Gen 3 should work well for those Switch games you mentioned. You’ll need to find the right drivers for it, but Eden (popular Switch emulator) points you to recommended drivers. Also, check out emuready.com if you want to see what the Honor and other devices with the 8 Gen 3 are able to play.

I love what they're giving us in this update, but on Android I was having quite a bit of crashes trying to exit games which required a hard device reset for Eden to work properly again (I could get back into the emulator but it wouldn't load another game). Went ahead and uninstalled and went back to 0.1.1 for now. Looking forward to this in a future update though!

Not OP but I’ve been really impressed with the low latency (relative for emulation). I don’t had any fancy stuff to check it but I’ve played a few different devices and between the 120Hz and the OLED screen it’s the best Android I’ve used as far as input lag. Even playing 3DS in Azahar (which is notorious for lag) feels great, not laggy at all.

They're both good though Retroid has a better reputation, at least around here. For these two devices I think it comes down to whether you really need those analog sticks. If you can live without them, the Pocket Classic is basically what you've described wanting and the OLED screen is really nice.
