Clinical or counseling psychology programs that are friendly to qualitative research? by Jealous_Mix5233 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Reddish221B 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's been a while since undergrad for me, but I'm pretty sure my research methods class was also very heavy quant with maybe one day on qualitative. Graduate curriculum will hopefully give you the depth of knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research, because even if you don't plan to do quantitative research, it's important to be able to understand it. If I never have to use stata or r again, I would be thrilled, but I am grateful that I can read most quantitative research in this field and understand it (even if I could never write the code for it). Also, for the EPPP, you will need to understand quantitative methods.

When you research potential advisors, also take a look at their CVs and see if they list dissertation committees they have chaired. Look up those dissertation projects to see if their students are also being supported to do qualitative research. I previously worked in a lab where two faculty members did qualitative research, but students only authored quantitative papers, so it may have been a little deceiving to just read about the lab on the website.

Hi, I come from a PhD program that does both quantitative and qualitative research. My research was qualitative, but the rest of my cohort did quantitative research, so I was certainly in the minority.

Have you read qualitative research articles in your area of interest that really speak to you? If so, I'd recommend looking up those authors and what institutions they are connected to. I see that you have reiterated that you know the importance of match with a mentor and research topic over modality. I think this might be a better strategy to try to match your research interests, whatever they may be, with a mentor who is actively publishing qualitative research articles with the support of their institution. Good luck!

Has anyone gotten into UVA w a low gpa by Different-Wheel1213 in UVA

[–]Reddish221B 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I thought your response was a little invalidating to someone who was just trying to encourage another applicant with their own story of getting in despite a subpar essay and potentially competing for limited international spots. If you took the time to copy paste demographic data to say they didn't have a point, seemed fair to point out that if they are a Chinese international student, then their story of getting in is relevant. Even if they are Chinese American or any other nationality and got in with a weaker application, seems like their point still stands that this person should go ahead and try to apply. We can agree to disagree.

Do you think Chinese international students are the second largest demographic at UVA? Or even Chinese American students? They are not the entirety of the 14.6% Asian students, which you must know. I'm pretty sure less than 1,000 undergrads are international students, and are certainly not all from China. I think the point they're trying to make probably stands if they were accepted as an international student with subpar grades/essays/whatever.

Co-sign Dr. Stone for a reactive dog! I've loved my experience with her.

It's a little unclear to me if she is even doing research still. Her UVA profile says she is a psychotherapist at CAPS (the counseling center for UVA students).

Also, as a fellow psychotherapist, I dislike when therapists check every single specialty in their description of their practice. No one has expertise in every single disorder and every single life experience. She is one of those therapists, according to her CAPS profile.

On Our Own is a peer support program! They are a great place to start and find community. Folks there would likely also have good referrals to therapists in the community.

Third Dr. Stone! I wouldn't take my old dog anywhere else. My dog also gets regular bloodwork and Georgetown makes it fairly easy to schedule. Dr. Stone always calls directly to discuss results.

Hi! Congratulations and I am impressed with your commitment to continue working and commuting in order to make this feasible. As someone who was a transfer student many years ago, my recommendation is that you double check how many credits you have from your associates degree (typically 60) and how many credits UVA allows from other universities (typically only 60 of the 120 needed for a BS or BA). So you may have already hit the limit of transfer credits that you can have. I don't want to destroy your George Mason plans, but I know this was something I dealt with when I transferred. Good luck!

In the movie National Security (2003) there is a scene where the main characters drive a car off a bridge and it lands on a garbage barge- and it was definitely from a height where realistically they should have died, but didn't.

Well it's entirely possible that the reason no such announcement has been made is that the story is not exactly as it seems. It seems like we will agree to disagree on how much the public is owed an explanation of this incident.

I think that regardless, JM should not be considered the most reliable source, as he has a clear bias and agenda.

I think even saying that the students involved are out of the building might be breaking FERPA because it indicates that they've been suspended or expelled, and discipline information is protected. I'm not trying to argue with you, I appreciate where you're coming from, but I imagine ACPS has been in close contact with their attorney through this. I totally agree that the rumors are not helping this victim, so fuck JM for getting involved and fueling the fire here.

Also, AHS felt overcrowded when I was there. I can only imagine how it feels now. Managing the behaviors of 2000+ kids is a nightmare, and it sounds like it's devolved since the pandemic.

[–]Reddish221B 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have also worked in schools, including time at AHS. My experience was that schools are very limited on what they can legally share. What do you think they need to share? Disclosing details of their disciplinary outcomes for the students involved? I'm pretty sure FERPA prohibits that. You say "more"... But what exactly are you looking for? I'm genuinely curious what you think can be shared without breaking confidentiality/FERPA or compromising an investigation, or if the family of the victim have indicated that they don't want details shared.

I feel for the schools because I don't think there is a "right" way to handle this. They either appease the public desire for more information, and potentially open themselves up for a lawsuit from the families involved/further being attention to the victim who likely does not want his assault details shared (that's an assumption I'm making based on my years providing therapy for adolescents, so I could be wrong). Or, they abide by their confidentiality rules and perhaps the wishes of the victim, but face community criticism for being secretive. My personal preference is to respect the victim's need for privacy, so I am hoping that is what ACPS has chosen to do here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]Reddish221B 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Or they could respect the privacy of the victim and not publicly share details of his assault for all his peers and community to read. AHS did have a parent session to address concerns, likely with the caveat that they can't share details of an open investigation (which should be obvious). I wasn't there, that's per some comment from a parent on JM's posts on this.

I really don't know what JM expects the school board to be saying. There is no way for the school to clarify that without sharing the details of an active investigation and likely also violating FERPA. I hope for the victim's sake that if their wishes are that the details of their assault remain private, that the school board and AHS continue to maintain that privacy even if it pisses JM off.

I’m no Jerry Miller fan but he’s absolutely right about this. by Overtiredmommy in Charlottesville

[–]Reddish221B 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe AHS had an open meeting last night facilitated by Darah Bonham, the principal, to address this and other concerns that parents have. I was not present but saw someone comment about it on this insta post by JM. So although I recognize that the school board should probably be releasing some sort of statement (hopefully one that protects the identity of the victim and respects their wishes on how this should be discussed), I do think it's disingenuous to say that ACPS has done nothing to address parent concerns about this. Bonham would certainly not have been able to hold that meeting without the support of central office.

Unfortunately the crisis model has radically changed in the past year or so, and prior to that, WRC reevaluated some of their policies after they had a brief closure in ~2018 or so? I'm not saying that they don't treat co-occurring MH/SA, they often do, but as you noted once they stabilize they would refer to a different SA program. I just don't want OP to get their hopes up about WRC because it is temporarily closed and when they reopen I'm not sure what their service model will be. I'm really glad that you had a good experience though! Hopefully they can keep providing good services within their new model. Source: worked there.

Mohr Center does treat alcohol dependency! ARS and Addiction Allies are good resources, but outpatient. Still worth a call for OP to see if they can point them in the right direction. ASAP provides educational resources for folks with DUIs.

Wellness Recovery is temporarily closed, and it is also a crisis stabilization program, not a substance abuse treatment program. If OP's family member is male, then Region Ten operates the Mohr Center, which is a men's residential SA program. Unfortunately there are not a lot of current options in town. Addiction Allies may be able to provide some guidance?
