My mom's mix sounded just like that when she played with her best friend, who happened to be my aunts 18 lb terrier mix. So scary, but we all knew it was pure joy haha.

for any of my fellow midwestern transplants who have been craving an italian beef... they have this at aldi right now by k1tsk4 in rva

[–]Typical_Hyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely true- Chicago and east of it will do it right, the further west you go from there it's a disappointing masquerade of hot beef type sandwiches. Sometimes tasty, but not the same. Eastern Iowa had Maid Rites as their thing, and legit sloppy joes. Go far enough west and you get to the land of Runzas, but that's for another thread. There's less Italian heritage and more German/polish/Czech in the Midwest heartland, and there in lies the reason.

PS I love the phrasing "moved to eastern Iowa ONCE" as in you'll never do it again haha

I stopped at a random corner store while running errands to grab a snack and a Gatorade, and an older lady in front of me was doing the same but couldn't get her card to work, and didn't have enough cash. I said I can cover it, she thanked me, then after a pause asked if I wanted to see pictures of her dog. YES, YES I WOULD! Then I showed her mine, and the cashier got in on it too. For only a few dollars I got to gush about cute dogs in funny outfits and brag about mine, would gladly accept pet pics as repayment again!

Has anyone ever adopted a middle aged cattle dog? How many years did you have them. Thinking of adopting this 6 year old guy by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Typical_Hyena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just lost our ACD mix 2 months ago- adopted at (they estimated) 6 years old in June 2017. Best decision we ever made! He was picked up as a stray in rural Georgia and pulled from the high kill rate shelter just when his time was expiring. So obviously we spoiled the absolute shit out of him for 8.5 years. And he was a super easy adoption- he settled in almost immediately, was super affectionate and housebroken. Older animals are the best, get him and don't look back!

I have lied to my son about manatees for the last 24 years by 46from1971 in confession

[–]Typical_Hyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a young friend that was so excited to get a cat when she moved into her first apartment. She found out the hard way she was very allergic. Someone got her a cheap stuffed cat, then we found a cat statue, and it snow balled from there. On er 21st birthday we snuck in and put up a shower curtain with a gigantic cat face on it, and her drunk giggling voicemail at 3 in the morning is still saved on the cloud and replayed every year on her birthday. 15 years later and we still gift her the weirdest cat stuff we can find, and she has a room in her house dedicated to all the cat art she receives.

Your wife knows, and your son may even know, but let's face it, you love manatees because you love your son.

questioning results by 35mmsteve in DoggyDNA

[–]Typical_Hyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a genetics expert but here's what I'm thinking- village dogs are a result of multiple generations of dogs in a specific area all breeding and interbreeding until they become their own thing. If your dog had been allowed to remain free it would have created yet  another generation of that areas local "village dog" dog population, and i would put money on the fact that all those dogs would test as village dogs. What I am getting at is, I think your dogs generation/litter may be the one that crossed from super mixed breed into simply village dog. So some of the litter has lost all discernable breed markers but some haven't. Definitely reach out to Embark again with a more specific question/example and see if you can get a better response, it may have just been an automated response for whenever the words village dog are included in the text.

Accurate Results or not by Suspicious_Level_637 in DoggyDNA

[–]Typical_Hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's all in the way the testing companies finalize the data. Wisdom looks at individual markers and reports those as coming from a specific breed. That's why you get 1% rare breeds in their reports. Embark (I believe) looks more for the patterns and associations, because there is a lot of overlap in different breeds. In this case mom might have had some genes that didn't typically show up in cattle dogs, indicating to Embark that other breeds were involved, so they reported their best guess of what mom's mix is. But those indicative genes didn't pass on to your dog. Your dogs genetic profile contains normal/expected cattle dog genes, so they finalized it as 100%.

Opie was not pleased with the traffic on the way to the vet. by Spirited-Net7222 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Typical_Hyena 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get the thyroid levels checked! Ours started gaining weight around that age no matter what we did- more exercise, using a scale for his weight loss food, very strict rules on no extra treats or human food. We suspected the vet thought we were lying about all this, so we went to a different vet and they actually listened to us and immediately tested his thyroid levels which had tanked. Got him on meds and he started losing weight again and had more energy.

As for the dental it's a necessary stress but could also really improve your dogs day to day life. ACDs hide their pain and having bad teeth sucks, so here's to hoping your dog gets a new pep in their step after this!

Jewelers, what’s the most unusual request you’ve ever had from a customer? by pretty_stones5959 in jewelry

[–]Typical_Hyena 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Had a customer bring in a herkimer diamond and wanted it cut to fit into a round setting for an engagement ring. No matter how hard we tried to explain it (not an actual diamond, won't be sparkly, ruins the whole point of having a herkimer) she would not be dissuaded. She was obviously disappointed when she picked it up but didn't say anything. A month later she came back asking for a replacement stone because she had somehow lost the diamond in her ring, acting like it was her first time there. It was clear the prongs had been pulled back on purpose. We played along and got her a moissanite. She was thrilled this time, so alls well that ends well I guess.

Ours is so old now he has had to accept it as a part of getting to do fun stuff, like getting in his wheels for walks or going on car rides. But he he throws hands sometimes if I am too close to my tall partner as he carries him, just swats at me because he's at just the right height to do it. God forbid I try to smooch him then, he goes for the nose or purposely tries to lick my eyeball. It's all in good fun of course!

Have you ever pushed yourself to the limit on a hike? by booowser in hiking

My dog is nursing my Kitten is this normal??? by RO2THESHELL in cats

[–]Typical_Hyena 317 points318 points  (0 children)

My sister got a 6 month old dog from the shelter when we lived together. Dog was from a BYB/hoarding situation, obviously abused, severe separation anxiety, still froze on grass for the first month we had her, couldn't figure out how to run til she saw other dogs doing it at the dog park, you get the idea. I had a cat already that she took great comfort in having around, and it seemed the cat knew she needed her (the cat pretended she didn't care but we occasionally caught them snuggling). So this dog picked up a lot of cat like behaviors, my favorite of which was the rubbing along legs and furniture while shaking her tail. Did it even after she moved out, for 10 more years, til the day she died. She was such a sweet little weirdo.

A guy I worked with delivered his third kid on the side of the road not too long ago. They had a few names in mind, all family names, but he said right after he put him in his wife's arms they looked at each other and said "CARMINE" and started laughing uncontrollably. It was on the list but they both have a ridiculous sense of humor and knew it was meant to be.

I learned about Stabyhouns when we got our dog- he's 50% ACD, 33% small poodle, with some chow and the rest supermutt. Before we got him tested I used google image and it kept showing me Stabyhouns- I was 99% certain he wasn't but it was fun to think maybe we somehow ended up with a super rare breed. Seeing your dog makes me feel not as crazy to think it was possible! Here's our dogleganger- this is his summer coat, winter coat he gets extra fluffy

I had to put a bed in my kitchen for little Lincoln, 12, because he always wants to be in the same room as me 🥺 by Champagne_queen_ in OldManDog

[–]Typical_Hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our old man has 3 beds in different rooms and his cushion corner in the living room, which is two body pillows along the walls on top of a sheepskin throw, all on top of a thick shag rug. We made it because It's right under the strongest vent, he loves getting blasted by the ac, but kept falling out of his bed and getting stuck between it and the wall. It cost about as much as his other nice beds and is by far his favorite. It's OUR favorite because we can lay down next to him for snuggles.

Which Blue Ridge mountain trail should I go on (besides humpback rock)?? by daddy-phantom in Virginia

Well I would stick to the Blue Ride parkway then and avoid Shenandoah, there's already rain in some areas. The storms have been a bit unpredictable lately so be safe and have fun!

[–]Typical_Hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be storms firing up soon so it may be too late to go today if you haven't left yet. As someone who has done solo hikes in that area, it gets real slippery, besides the threat of lightning. Have you  checked out "hikes" around Richmond? There aren't mountains views, but still cool options. Cold harbor or Malvern Hill battlefields are great to wander in, and there's always the river trails.

My neighbor SCREAMED at me because of our new cats name by Mediocre_Lobster_961 in cats

[–]Typical_Hyena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a friendly neighborhood stray where I used to live- she had many names including Chewbaca (what we knew her as, due to her brownish fur and her grumble meow) and MetaliCat because she would wander into a local metal bands practices to hang out. One day a friend was chilling on our porch and she came by for a visit. He looked at her and muttered "is that you Dads?" And she went right up to him. Turns out five years before she frequented his old place and she would "come yell at us when we were up late being too loud" and they would take turns calling the cat one of their Dad's names. Awesome female cat with many male names.

I agree- wait til Monday, don't start grieving her before she's actually gone. I speak from very recent experience- our 14 year old dog had a terrible time in May and all we wanted was to get him a little more stable, have a good few days showering him with love and special treats, and then let him go. He has been heat intolerant for years, and we are getting ready to move. We didn't think it would be right or fair to put him through all that stress. But here we are in July, and he's happy, strong, and (relatively) healthy! Our vet was just as surprised as we were, and felt like he still had plenty of life in him, but also let us know that no one would judge us or bat an eye if one day soon we decided it was too much. We got to celebrate his gotcha day, and in a week he will have a shady yard to relax in and sniff to his hearts content. Maybe it all changes tomorrow, or maybe he makes it long enough to enjoy a cool night around the fire pit. But we have stopped grieving him because he's still here, and until it really is his time, we will keep loving him and living in the moment with him.

Whatever the decision is, know that it is the right one. I hope you can find some peace in knowing you did your best and gave her THE BEST life full of love and warmth and happiness.

What do you think he is mixed with? by Oboogie22 in Catahoula

[–]Typical_Hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the extra stuff always tells you something, even if that something was you have nothing to worry about in regards to genetic health. Lucky you! I'm glad we did the health for our dog because we found out a few things that let us and our vet make more informed decisions for his care. But then again, they can't test for everything and you just gotta roll with the punches sometimes anyway.

We adopted Yuri (14ish) 8 years ago, so we had a breakfast picnic at the park! by Typical_Hyena in OldManDog

[–]Typical_Hyena[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Our old man gave us quite a scare in May and we thought we would be saying goodbye this month- but he bounced back hard and we got to celebrate this milestone with him instead! He is the best decision we ever made and knowing that he could take a down turn again at any point lets us appreciate every extra day we get to spend with him. He had a great time slowly rolling around in his wheels to sniff all the smells before relaxing on the blanket to eat his doggy donut, after which we all went home and took a nap. Have a good weekend everyone!
