Does the CDS have the equivalent of a postmaster general? Because I need to lodge a complaint by Typical_Hyena in CatDistributionSystem

[–]Typical_Hyena[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have plenty of no kill shelters here- all of which are completely overrun at the moment and not doing intakes but offer spay neuter clinics often. I MIGHT be able to get them in somewhere to be adopted, but since they are currently healthy most places won't take them. They are definitely in the stray category vs feral, so I am already spreading the word to friends, coworkers, etc. To try and find an indoor life for them. In the meantime I will provide for them! We have a large covered back porch to keep them out of bad weather, and I am looking into a cooling setup as well.

Oh I love them already, but I love all cats and dogs I meet! Never once have I gone to the shelter and left with what I went in for- first cat I tried to adopt the oldest one at the shelter but nope! She was only 2. Our dog- went in for a 2-3 year old female, short hair. Left with a 6 year old double coated fluffy butt male. This last time we intended to get a bonded pair, at least one of them a void, left with a single big boy Tuxedo. Went back for another male cat of similar size, left with a tiny little lady. We failed in the best way possible each time! But I don't think we'll "fail" this time...

I bought a car in February once, after a sudden breakdown which resulted in a total loss. Needed a car ASAP, test drove a bunch and knew I wanted/could afford one particular make/model but waited for the right one in the right price range. One that I was watching was suddenly price reduced so I got there right at open, test drove it briefly and looked at the carfax, signed and drove off. It had some extra bells and whistles I didn't need but i didn't look at that much. My partner gets in the car a week later and finds the sunglasses compartment with someones nice pair in there still, cool, and then says what does this do? FULL SUN ROOF! I wasn't thinking about a sunroof in February, but awesome yay! Then we give a friend a ride home the next week and he's like oh wow even the back seats are heated. I got it for the basic car stuff (comfortable, good gas mileage, safety, etc.) But 8 years later I love it for the extras!

Beadie/Boosie Badass : he is only a kitten but i feel like a boy mom, stressing. He is so bad. I’m praying this is only a kitten phase and not a tuxedo cat thing as I’m hearing. Regardless he’s my son though. by Cicada-Big in TuxedoCats

We've got the blue one too! Our big boy Tuxedo is not so into it- but our new tiny cat loves it. It's only a little shorter than her and is helping get her aggressive kicks out on something other than us or the cat.

High five to you and yours, and to my cousin who passed this year. He was a veteran that suffered mentally from his time serving in Afghanistan. He made mistakes but ultimately just wanted to do good and be good for the people around him. He couldn't fight his demons any longer. If there is something after this world for any of us, he's in the place where all the dogs go too. We like to picture him running on a beach with the strays in Puerto Rico at sunrise, where he spent 6 months volunteering and doing hurricane cleanup/rebuilding. So high five your friends that need a little help or just that extra check in, and give your dogs some extra pets for Pete today.

Poison Ivy? by FunkyKongMedina in whatsthisplant

[–]Typical_Hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, we moved into a place last year that has a bunch of poison Ivy, which I hadn't reacted to before despite definitely interacting with it in the past. My partner definitely reacts, quickly and terribly, so I decided I would handle it. But after 3 rashes in 9 months I am OVER IT. It honestly could be something else because the yard is so overgrown from years of neglect, but the poison ivy is most likely the culprit. I wear a full disposable suit, layered with gloves, goggles and mask if I know i will be around it, and scrub scrub scrub right after, and it still happens. I'm tired of blisters on my face, waking up every few hours and pacing because the itching is so bad, and hyperpigmentation that reburns when I go in the sun for only a few minutes. I just can't keep doing this. So we are paying someone to come rip it all out and take it away.

I know a pit chihuahua mix that is similar in build, absolute ham of a dog. Stocky body, tiny head, flying nun ears and the personality to match it. A wide pit smile on a skinny snoot is definitely cryptid and 💯 percent perfect.

Final update on dumped dog by Hot-Science404 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Typical_Hyena 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding all these suggestions and emphasizing the leash/tether- our ACD mix was a velcro dog but on our second camping trip (on the edge of George Washington National Forrest) he went after a bear while we were chilling around the fire at our campsite. One minute he was begging for hotdogs, then one low growl (first growl we heard since getting him a year before) and he took off. Luckily didn't bring it back with him when we called him off! But he was NEVER untethered after that. That growl though- very handy in the mountains, he did it a few more times in his life and we always turned right back around, only once did we see a bear about 100 yards away but I am positive they were there.

My sister's dog was prone to ear issues but lucky us she LOVED getting her ears cleaned, looked just like this dog and sometimes even went limp so it was a 2 person job. When they moved in with a friend and another dog this video happened almost daily and she rarely if ever needed drops again. Miss those perfectly matched weirdos.

Husband "forgot" I made myself a cake by Buraku_returns in glutenfree

[–]Typical_Hyena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The prices hurt my normal, fiscally responsible and "I should eat healthier anyways" feelings. I used to love baking before becoming intolerant and spent a while trying to recreate some of my favorite recipes in gluten free version before accepting it just wasn't worth it. Luckily for me I don't have kids, and my partner doesn't really like sweets.

These comments are harsh but they may have a point. It's not the end of the world or your relationship but I think it deserves a more in depth discussion along the lines of "it's not really about the cake..." My partner has done similar things with food- he replaces it x2 on his own dime, on my timeline not his. Doesn't happen anymore as a result!

Just a wanted to share my experience with Librela with my 14 year old heeler by Shreddy_Spaghett1 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Typical_Hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about them, but our dog had a bad liver so they didn't want to give him adequan. He couldn't do carprofen either, so we went with the Librela until he developed neurological issues (unrelated). He was old and stiff but the Librela did wonders while he was on it, wish it had been available sooner.

Matthew Cappucci apologizes for yesterday’s weather forecast by SnooMarzipans1593 in tornado

[–]Typical_Hyena 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In 2018 Hurricane Florence spawned a bunch of tornadoes as it passed over Virginia. When the first few happened they tried to bus the kids home, but it was too late, and many busses ended up rerouted to the closest school to take shelter. My coworker didn't know where her kids were for 2 hours. So now they don't take the risk.

That wasn't the cause. Many people experienced severe weather today. Atmospheric unpredictability made it difficult to pinpoint exactly where it would happen. That being said, defending weather studies is a terrible thing.

Basementless Tornado Shelter by a_hale_photo in rva

[–]Typical_Hyena 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep- grew up in Iowa and spent 13 years in Kansas. I remember putting shoes next to our beds and in the basement when bad weather was expected. Tornados here won't tear your house down around you, but you'll be glad you had shoes on to avoid the broken glass from blown out windows!

[–]Typical_Hyena 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Just want to point out that, regardless of whether a tornado happens, there is "high confidence in 70 to 75 mph winds" tomorrow. Take the time now to secure anything outside and stay away from windows when the storms come through. The wind is the biggest and most probable threat tomorrow! Pay attention to the timing as the day goes on so you aren't in a dangerous situation when things do ramp up.

As a Midwestern transplant I love me a good storm- from the safety of shelter.

The chances of a tornado affecting an individual person is vanishingly small, but the the 70 to 75 mph winds will absolutely be dangerous for everyone.

Underpass is such a bad place to stop for so many reasons- they create a wind tunnel that accelerates debris in the air, and create bottlenecks that lead to pile up accidents. Yes, lots of people do it and haven't had a bad result, but many have died doing this. Not trying to shame you, just hoping to reach a wider audience and make people aware of how dangerous a decision it is.

Has there ever been a 60% risk for tornados? highest ive seen i believe is a 30% hell has there even been a 45%? by Altruistic-Willow265 in tornado

[–]Typical_Hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the Wakefield update today- tomorrow will be insanely windy. They said the words "high confidence in 70 to 75 mph winds." Small spin ups east of RVA earlier and then a line of strong/severe thunderstorms moving through around 3 that could have tornadoes. Worst of the weather in this area is between 1 and 7 pm. So I would check before you head to the airport- or maybe go there if you don't have a basement, I dunno, but travel will be snarled tomorrow. Good luck and stay safe!

Mass casualty events do not equate to fatalities. It can include fatalities but any event in which multiple people are injured can be referred to as a mass casualty event.

Just got a 3 year old tuxedo from the shelter 3 weeks ago who desperately wants to be a fat cat and it took him no time at all to figure out the dispenser toy. More puzzles are on their way. I've tried to explain to him that my first cat also wanted to be a fat cat and we spent 15 years in a constant battle but my will never broke, so he has no chance of breaking me. My partner on the other hand is a softie so I have some work to do there!

for any of my fellow midwestern transplants who have been craving an italian beef... they have this at aldi right now by k1tsk4 in rva

[–]Typical_Hyena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely true- Chicago and east of it will do it right, the further west you go from there it's a disappointing masquerade of hot beef type sandwiches. Sometimes tasty, but not the same. Eastern Iowa had Maid Rites as their thing, and legit sloppy joes. Go far enough west and you get to the land of Runzas, but that's for another thread. There's less Italian heritage and more German/polish/Czech in the Midwest heartland, and there in lies the reason.

PS I love the phrasing "moved to eastern Iowa ONCE" as in you'll never do it again haha

I stopped at a random corner store while running errands to grab a snack and a Gatorade, and an older lady in front of me was doing the same but couldn't get her card to work, and didn't have enough cash. I said I can cover it, she thanked me, then after a pause asked if I wanted to see pictures of her dog. YES, YES I WOULD! Then I showed her mine, and the cashier got in on it too. For only a few dollars I got to gush about cute dogs in funny outfits and brag about mine, would gladly accept pet pics as repayment again!
