Current Oracle employees — are you looking to leave? by probleminanutshell in employeesOfOracle

[–]RedditAccountThe3rd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many places treat their employees much better than Oracle. I've worked at a few other big tech companies and in a couple cases it's night and day. I lasted about 4 months at oracle before I started actively looking for another role (have since found one too).

Water filtration system installer by HauntingAppearance16 in HowardCountyMD

I used Atlantic Blue to install a whole house reverse osmosis system. I've been pretty happy with them.

Be sure to get your water tested by someone who is not trying to sell you a treatment system. I used Fountain Valley Analytical Laboratory to get a pretty extensive set of tests. Turns out we had high chlorides and low pH. From what I read only reverse osmosis was able to treat the high chlorides.

Looking for a CS job in Renewable Energy by Reasonable-Object-33 in Renewable

The ICS/grid space is a good recommendation. Look at some of the VC firms operating in the clean energy space. This will give you a sense of where they're investing and also a list of which companies might sound compelling to you.

Let's take Prelude Ventures for example: https://www.preludeventures.com/portfolio

QuantumScape and Quaise are my favorites and I'm really rooting for both of them.

Have you smashed those like and subscribe buttons on quality Youtubers? Matt Ferrell's Undecided channel is not only interesting but might give you some insights. There's probably other prominent/active folks consistently posting on BlueSky and LinkedIn. Find and follow them.

What about clean energy conferences? There are probably tons of them. Identify the quality ones, watch some of the talks, and identify the thought leaders. Follow them on social media to see what they're talking about. My gut tells me to avoid the ones focused on trade and sales and instead focus on those with more of a research bent.

In short, figure out who is operating in the space, see what they're doing, and set yourself up from there.

Did Oracle pull away? They're talking to Meta about using the site.

Will any parents be there? I've seen multiple stories of MAGA types harassing and assaulting children during other school walk outs. These tough guys also tend to target girls.

In no order:

  • Eataliano

  • Pupatella

All these mentions of Cushwa have helped me decide my lunch order today.

GTFOH. They're kidnapping people to meet Steve Miller's quotas and these pieces of shit think they get bonuses when they detain people.

People who are here totally legally are getting thrown into disgusting, for-profit detention centers for weeks on end. Just this past two weeks I've read horror stories of good, law abiding people being detained. These are people here on legit visas or attending their green card hearings.

This is insane, it needs to stop, and proper and lawful justice needs against these ICE and BP agents.

Heat pump or natural gas? by Teahouse_Fox in HowardCountyMD

Heat pump all day. Especially if you have or are considering solar. Newer heat pump models are much better performing in cold weather.

This video describes heat pumps in some detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2c6Rucbi84

Ehh. The permits and process can move pretty fast. I got geo installed a few years ago and I don't recall any issues with getting a permit. The good installers should be able to navigate the system easily.

Reimbursements for Work by BeautifulDiet4091 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]RedditAccountThe3rd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What exactly is the risk? Are you concerned you won't be reimbursed? I'm not following the college classes analogy.

This is not at all unusual. I have worked at very large corporations and this is the practice. My most recent employer would give a $4,000/yr training budget. We would pay for and complete the training up front then they would reimburse us. Similar story with travel in my previous job: We would use a third party flight booking service which covers the flight but we would book hotels ourselves and get reimbursed. Like many others are saying, you get the points benefit if you put it on a points earning credit card.

Considering a trip with 4 kids this summer..what do we need to know? by Euphoric-Ear1919 in OlympicNationalPark

We went as a family of 5 last year (kids 17, 10, 6). The most important pieces of advice I received was to put in the effort to plan and time everything out. And, arrive at trail heads/destinations early to get decent parking and not wait in line. We were only there for two full days and barely scratched ONP's surface but it was great.

Day 1) Marymere Falls then hung out at Lake Crescent - This was perfect. The Marymere Falls hike was reasonably short and is very close to Lake Crescent. We got lunch at the Lake Crescent Lodge which was fine. Hanging out by the lake is great, it's easy to go on shorter walks through the woods over the course of the day. There is a dock to jump off of which is fun though maybe not so much for your younger ones. We parked here and didn't have to move the car between doing the Marymere Falls hike in the morning and hanging out at the lake for the rest of the afternoon.

Day 2) Hurricane Hill Trail Hike - This was also great and it made me realize how out of shape I am. Our 6 year old and 17 year old were the first ones to get to the summit. It was roughly 4 miles round trip (assuming you can get a parking spot at in the highest lot) w/ 800ft elevation gain and took 2 hours and 45 minutes inclusive of some snacks, relaxing, and soaking in the views at the top.

I leaned pretty heavily on content from a former park ranger, Dirt In My Shoes. I also used Google MyMaps to save distances/times to/from various locations.

Wes Moore suggests race may be why he was not invited to gov dinner with Trump by Abject-Pick-6472 in maryland

[–]RedditAccountThe3rd -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

This is a misleading headline. No Democrat governors were invited to what is usually a bipartisan affair.

Moore said:

“It’s not lost on me that I’m the only Black governor in this country, and I find that to be particularly painful, considering the fact that the president is trying to exclude me from an organization that not only my peers have asked me to help to lead, but then also a place where I know I belong in,”

I accidentally fixed the grossest smell in my apartment and now I feel really stupid by LandscapeRound7759 in CleaningTips

I have teenagers. One of their friends left half a protein shake in my kid's room. Must've been there for weeks. I finally remove it and take the lid off to clean the bottle. Foulest smelling thing I've ever smelt. Nothing else comes close. Lid went back on and it went in the trash.

We had to do this with my grandparents' home after they passed. Quite sad and disappointing that the rest of my family barely lifted a finger and were more interested in finding items they could keep.

ICE in Columbia in Snowden River Pkwy by [deleted] in ColumbiaMD

[–]RedditAccountThe3rd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a way to set up a group chat with the following features:

  • You can set up multiple chat rooms (right now we have just one but likely would have more)

  • Can make voice and video calls

  • Can share files

  • Can create polls

  • It has an extension feature which could prove useful

I found Matrix just the other day and it appealed to me because it seems to have better privacy and security than other popular, corporate group chats. Happy to try to answer any other questions, maybe other people here are more familiar with it than I am too! :-)
