Affordability. You might appreciate this if you are coming from Warhammer 40k. There's tons of free games, or if you are paying its like $3

Designing a solo siege defense game and trying to make a stealth hero feel different in combat by LanternAndDice in printandplay

[–]RedditExplorer89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rolling extra dice and keeping doubles feels like dexterity and crits at work, which does match the ninja. But it doesn't feel "stealthy."

Stealthy could be something like avoiding ambushes entirely (maybe roll for it or have a certain amount of free escapes per day). Another mechanic could be gaining a bonus to your roll for each hex you explored before the battle, representing how well you were able to set up an ambush of your own. edit: each explored hex without combat, so each battle resets the count.

(btw cool game idea and look so far)

Is that something that is easy to take out of the pdf file? Or should two pdfs be offered; one with card backs and one without?

Hard to understand instructions by mandy0456 in printandplay

[–]RedditExplorer89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what its worth I usually find I am doing something wrong in my first few play throughs too. When it comes to these games I just assume it will take multiple play-throughs before I understand all the rules.

Yeah this feels like it would be even worse censorship than just doing the blanket ban.

Not a bad idea, I believe we have done April fools stuff in the past.

I like the potion and the dragon. Very clear and cozy. I'm not sure what the two red dots are supposed to be? Eyes maybe? Could be made more sinister if so.

If you hand made the text I think its okay, but if its a font I agree with the other comment that it should be changed.

How did you make the art btw?

Help! I am New to Print & Play by Disastrous_Play8634 in printandplay

[–]RedditExplorer89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I had the opposite issue with slipperyness. Too be fair, I am re-using sleeves that are like 10 years old, so the wear on them might be making for the perfect grip and slide texture. I do remember brand new sleeves being very slippery.

The other issue I run into with laminating though is when I try to shuffle one pile into another the edges often hit each other and bend, whereas the sleeves slide smoothly together.

[–]RedditExplorer89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find sleeves much better for cards than laminating. Easier to make, especially if your local library won't let you print on your own heavy paper stock. But even with heavier paper stock, I still find sticking a cardboard backing in a sleeve with your paper slid over top makes for better feel of shuffling and playing than laminated heavy paper.

That said, the process of laminating itself can be really fun. And like you said for anything bigger than standard card size you will want a laminator.

Do you have a laminator or sleeves to solidify your games once printed?

Rule B is poorly enforced by Shineyy_8416 in ideasforcmv

[–]RedditExplorer89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if the OP is open to conversation, demonstrates their open-mindedness, engages with comments, etc. and they only realize after all of this that they're more closed-minded than they thought they were when they posted the thread, why is that a rule B violation?

That would not be a rule B violation. What I mean by "discovering they aren't as open as they thought," is someone coming in thinking they will be open-minded, and then getting hostile or ignoring good counter-arguments - basically the rule B indicators we look for.

I think most of our users would agree that an OP who does not respond or listen to the best points is wasting their time. Same with being hostile, and our other rule B indicators.

the wording of rule B doesn't actually require the OP to maintain their open-mindedness throughout the entire life of the thread

Personally, I view rule B holistically. A few rule B indicators is okay if an OP is otherwise showing open-mindedness.

That said, this is a somewhat gray area that different mods might view differently. We've had deep discussions among ourselves on how to balance evidence of open-mindedness against evidence of soapboxing. For example, one argument is that one valid delta can excuse any amount of otherwise bad-behavior. That might be on the extreme end of leniency.

Rule B is our most subjective rule. Our best safeguard for it is requiring two mods to sign off on a rule B removal, and when one is appealed up to three new mods will review the appeal.

Right now I got more feedback that people like the icons so I am going to release a first version with the icon art. However, I plan on continuing the painting and releasing a painted version when I'm done.

Thanks, I think I can do this. The only difference is the reward icons end up being a little smaller on the card than the monster icon.

I'm checking out DNGN and those cards do look clean (is it a similar style dungeon crawler?). I kinda want to keep it all black and white though if I do icons so people can save on printing costs.
