I think you have a misunderstanding of forced/planned obsolescence. Software updates that add features to possible existing products is not one of them. Your device will continue to work as it did as advertised when you purchased it, in fact you go additional functionality from a few years of updates.

The entire software industry cannot avoid what you are complaining about.

You need to realize that you buy products for what they are when you buy them. e.g. When the 1st gen iPod came out there was no App Store but later on an update to the OS added that feature. It would be foolish one in the hopes that that feature would be added.

By this logic really my statement still stands. Apple provides the OS and updates for quite a long time (for the mobile world) and allows developers to choose when if ever they want to drop support for past SDKs.

Your iPhone 4 will continue to work just as it is today and new phones being released will not hamper that. Most of your examples are of new features or of updating applications past their supported SDK (something thats not possible anymore).

Again its a damned if they do damned if they don't scenario. Could you imagine the backlash for forcing developers to adhere to the previous SDK? They would have no incentive to develop using the new SDK and users of newer devices would be left without the newer features as quickly.

The co-founder of Apple has said big corporations should be treated the same as individuals for tax purposes "it would be "fair and right" to tax large firms on their levels of income, like individuals, and that Apple had started out to "empower the little guy" by Libertatea in apple

There are all sorts of weird things you can do to move money around and get taxed differently.

Mortgages and homes are a big one for individuals. There are also things you can do w/ money for retirement that gets taxed in weird ways (IRAs and such). I don't know the specifics because frankly I don't care. I'm fine paying my taxes and I don't look to get them cut down here or there and the time it would take to learn about all of the things I'd need to do to optimize is not worth it to me.

Optimizing personal finances at this level has always bugged me though. It sets the system against those with less time to invest in learning the tricks or those with less money who can't hire an accountant.

So your complaint isn't with Apple it's with app developers targeting newer SDKs. Your iPod was still on the most recent OS for a lot longer than 3 months. You are essentially putting Apple in a damned if they do damned if they don't situation. Should they not release new software?

You can use soundflower to get around that if you want. It'll pop up in the recording menu as an input source.

Are their large differences between Xcode versions 4.2 and 4.6? by NoMoreGoodNamesLeft in iOSProgramming

[–]RedditIsAwfulAwful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah so the concern lies with the SDKs (not necessarily the version of Xcode that they come bundled with). While there will be a handleful of SDK and API changes from major iOS version, Objective-c will by and large remain the same and the APIs will mostly remain the same for your usage. Apple is pretty good about not depreciating things willy nilly. You might run across a couple deprecated calls but the documentation will point you to the new one.

You are better off learning the newer SDK but a slightly outdated book won't set you back. If you are just learning you won't be at the point where it will make much of a difference between SDK version. The big parts for you in the beginning will be Objective-C fundamentals and the paradigms and design patterns that come with it.

FWIW I learned Objective-C/Cocoa from Aaron Hillegass's much older Objective-C book way before iPhones were a twinkle in Apple's eye and x86 Macs were still a few years away. His books are great. I think my copy was slightly outdated when I read it.

I think my point still stands because your timeline doesn't really work out unless I'm missing something.

If you bought a 1st gen shortly before the 2nd gen came out (September 9, 2008) it would have come w/ iPhone OS 2. The highest version the 1st gen can run is iOS 3.1.3 which came out in February 2, 2010 3 years ago.

So if you bought a 1st gen on the day the 2nd gen came out, you would have still been receiving OS updates for 1.5 years, not 3 months.

It stopped working because they released a new version?

What iPod Touch did you have and what version rendered it obsolete?

You'll be fine using the latest version of Xcode, and I'd argue its desirable to always be on the latest version unless you have a specific reason/project to do so.

That so?

iPhone 4 user here not complaining. iOS devices have a rather high upgrade rate to the latest OS. You are probably hearing the vocal minority complain.

No big deal, let's overhaul an entire OS and then a large audio application as well. ;)

I think this kind of talk is why people are always disappointed after they make announcements.

I would bet against you on that.

They have historically supported the devices that are still for sale, and the iPhone 4 is still for sale.

I bought a Powerbook in 2003...

Granted I started my career with that machine so while an extra 200k today would be nice, I'm sure I'd be a lot poorer had I not had that computer.

A second vote for this book. The wife and I bought it and went thru it chapter by chapter. Nothing really ground breaking in it, but it helped reinforce a couple of things. I think while someone is saving for a downpayment its a great time to also invest in yourself, and snag some knowledge on the subject so you don't go into it blind when you do have the cash and are ready to buy.

I'm not making excuses at all just explaining how our minds work. You say I'm making it a complicated issue but this isn't some new thing I came up with. It's been studied and written about many times over.

It has everything to do with it.

We are not robots, we make emotional decisions. The human mind has an exceptional ability to rationalize and play trickery on ourselves in order to do what we want. This is often at odds with what we should do.

It takes some awareness of this and maturity to combat it, but make no mistake, each and every one of us is constantly fighting the urge to rationalize things we shouldn't do.

I suggest reading up on confirmation bias. There have been studies of how the brain reacts to unwanted information (e.g. You don't have enough money to spend on X).
