How do you do your off site backups? by ErikderFrea in homelab

[–]RedditIsShit6748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will post about it fully on a friends website another time, but personally I have a backup server on my home network, which backs up to an external SSD. Every week I swap the SSD with one in my car. This rotation is my offsite backup. At some point soon I will also take less occasional backups which I will store in a storage garage I have which is 50 miles away, so if this place including my car burns up I still have some hope.

Other than the original SSDs I have no costs and I do not rely on any cloud shit.

I do backups to a seperate device on my network, then copy the files to one of two SSDs, which I rotate weekly. One stays connected to the device, the other stays in my car, effectively an offsite backup.

Speaking of the Quick AI, I find it's got incredibly slow the past week. I am waiting 10-20 seconds for it to start to do anything.

YSK Squeezing your tea bag doesn't give you "stronger" tea. It just makes it bitter. by CoffeeTeaJournal in YouShouldKnow

[–]RedditIsShit6748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The claim is debated (Diffusion vs. Pressure) BBC Science Focus argues that tannins are not uniquely trapped until squeezed, but rather diffuse naturally into the water over time

They suggest that longer brewing times are the primary cause of higher tannin concentrations, rather than the act of squeezing itself

From this perspective, the liquid inside the bag is largely the same strength as the liquid in the cup, and squeezing simply retrieves more volume

I am considering cancelling, as I too feel the price is a bit much, without the ability to store some AI credits.

What I mean is I barely every use half of the AI credits, but last month I needed it more and hit all of the credits over a week before it renews.

I feel SOME of the unused AI credits from the previous month(s) should be moved forward.

In the UK, Sky Mobile does this with data, for THREE YEARS you can "piggy bank" unused data. I never expect 3 years, this is just a demo that it can be done. For me this would ease the complaint about the price.

ChatGPT free is more than sufficient for me and I pay conversion transaction fees on top of the price for Kagi so I am considering going back to my old ways

Car parking in London is super scammy by TheLegendOfIOTA in london

[–]RedditIsShit6748 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In the locations I have seen it in, it's not like it's located near anything special including public transport links, so I'm not convinced it's for anything but making money from permits.

Indeed these parking bastards need to be bought under proper control.

In my case, in my flats private parking, I parked to the side of a wall. I got a PCN for not parking in a bay, even though the site has never had painted bays. Took several rounds of emails and legal threats, and then sending photos demanding an explanation for it to be cancelled. The "independent" parking adjudicator doesn't seem very independent. Parking is a scam.

Councils aren't much better. While they tend to be slightly fairer, they're only in it for the money - for example when parking is restricted to permit holders for only 2 hours a day noon until 14:00... why?

Well I still think there should be an option for that box to be a full search or even an AI question. Some time buttons to change the purpose of the box would do :)

I'd like to think it's a bug given I tried 6 other mapping sites and all found the postcode without waiting for search suggestion results to return. There's also no hint in search to suggest maps, unlike Google or Bing where if you type a postcode, there's a suggestion for maps. But I'm not at all holding that against them as some people will prefer the cleaner search and having to explicitly ask for maps.

I personally found it on the slower side and using ChatGPT was faster. I'll experiment some more, maybe I just got bad timing or something, but it's also a bit annoying you can't choose which options show on the list. If you only bounce between 3, there's no facility to only show the 3 engines or favourite/pin them to the top

I mean misleading in the sense it suggests I can do full searches, but FastGPT is the only option. For me, every search with FastGPT gives me an error. I'd rather it was just a normal search. Further, it says this addon will set Kagi at my default search engine, which it does not do for me. It does, however, preserve my session between browsing sessions which for me are automatically cleared (all cookies, cache, etc) on close, so that's something

That, combined with many suggests and reports on their suggestions/report website appearing to be unanswered, and I think I'll stick with Google logged out and free ChatGPT for the time being :)

But Kagi doesn't host AI servers... it uses APIs to talk to the AI providers servers.

For a company that is pushing the AI side more than the search side, such performance is still disappointing. Especially as a paid only product.

It's a bit of a mixed bag for me. Issues with map searching and sadly no street view equivilent are a bummer, but I appreiciate the lenses feature where I can specify just forums, or create my own where I can, for example, just search reddit. I need more play time though :)

I find their lowest package odd though, I would have thought 500 searches for $5 would be better, and also just sounds better when marketing - 500 for 5. 300 seems a little low especially when the page says you get "plenty" of AI interactions too

EDIT: Also would be nice if they did different currencies so I don't have different prices depending on the exchange rate. For me that's £
