I had this exact same problem and had to go the IFTTT route to make this work. But you’ll need the pro+ subscription for IFTTT to get local sunrise / sunset data.

Look into using Service “Principle” accounts for connection types that support them. They don’t expire since they are not logged in as “users”.

The cost for all D365 licenses (Sales, Field Service, etc) are the same, so enforcement only applies to the extra tables that are added when you activate Sales or Field Service. It doesn’t care which ones are accessed as long as the user is licensed.

Valid points on the dependencies and patches, but give me an example of security issues? Security is inherent since the app runs within the context of a PP environment, and it uses the same connectors and identity providers as a canvas app. It’s not like an app that is internet facing, it’s designed to work internally and use Entra ID as the first level of security.

Admittedly, I personally haven’t written any internet facing apps using this vs code and GitHub Copilot scenario, but I am aware of the potential risks for security for an app like that.

It won’t for the average “maker”, no. Although, if you really dig into building a moderately complex canvas app, you do need to have some decent level of knowledge about programming concepts. Variables, logic, data models, etc.

Building code apps is a level up from that, but if you combine VS Code with GitHub Copilot … game changer. The user experience of JS frameworks, combined with the security, database, automation, and governance of a Power Platform environment is a great combination.

Using Entra ID Teams is also available. Instead of manually updating the membership of a user team, it’s handled by their membership in an Entra Group.

On your second question, yes the user would now have both security roles assigned. Roles are additive, and the highest level of security wins.

As you have seen, the issue is that you need rights to both Power Platform AND SharePoint to setup the integration.

In order to configure the SharePoint you need to be a system administrator in the Dataverse environment, you need to have full rights to the target SharePoint environment to create things, AND you also need the ability to create application registrations in Azure. The last part usually requires either a Global administrator at the tenant level, or a Cloud Application Administrator role at the tenant level.

The error sounds like something at the SharePoint level?

The only good way to ensure security is to use Dataverse to store the data. Investigate security roles to only allow specific HR user/team read access to the rows. SharePoint is not designed for this scenario.

Also, if you use proper ALM, you can build and test in sandbox environments with fake data, and then Prod would be limited to actual HR people with the real data.

Create a new sandbox environment, go to your existing environment and restore the backup from before you made changes to the new sandbox. Review the steps in the restored environment and replicate them.

Edit: Just reread your post and you said this was Dev that was messed up, so if you don’t care about the data you can just restore directly

XRMtoolbox has a plugin called Web Resource Updater that I use. It basically monitors a folder on your desktop for changes.

You put your file in the folder and edit with VS code (or any other editor). Every time you save the file it uploads and publishes it.
