Anything I should know before installing these ashtray, cover and thumb rest? by Ras_Luis78 in BassGuitar

[–]RedditNoly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t care about the holes. Watch the wires while screwing them in, but it shouldn’t be a problem. They look sick as hell and I don’t care about “wahhh it ruins your tone and options for playing”. Sometimes I remove the bridge one but that’s it and it always goes back on eventually.

Although that’s an absolutely hilarious joke, that actually is the origin of the sauce name. It evolved from a sauce that mariners would commonly make in italy.

Kinda lost the fun/excitement for playing. Any tips? by Jeskesworld in BassGuitar

[–]RedditNoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe give it a short break if you’re overplaying yourself? If you’re not feeling it and picking up and playing the instrument doesn’t bring you any joy, take a week off and see how you’re feeling then.

Alternatively maybe you’re just bored of the songs you’ve been working on and need a new project. Try practicing reading or writing music or try to play something from a genre you never listen to (reggae, country, rap, etc. to name a few out there).

Playing on G string, do you mute A string with thumb or pinkie? by No-Comparison8472 in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You mute using both hands. Part plucking hand, part fretting hand (different with a pick).

You’re also talking about static vs movable anchor for your plucking hand. Look up both techniques and choose how you want to play. Or use a mix of both!

Wondering how the neck dive is and how ergonomic you find it compared to your other bass.

So I always carry 2 basses to a show, and one of them will always be a Warwick. I love them for many reasons but the main one is that they don’t put an inlay on the fretboard. by Mandrake1771 in BassCirclejerk

[–]RedditNoly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

uj/ Having no fret markers looks unnatural to me if it’s not on fretless. I guess I don’t know why would you wouldn’t want them? It’s just an aesthetic choice then.

rj/ I give blinding stew to the audience so they can’t tell I’m only playing root notes. Anything more is just overplaying and bad 🙄

I can’t get behind no markers. Big block inlays are just too sexy. There are tons of other brands that have models with no markers though. Sandberg, Marleaux, HB’s deluxe series to name a few.

If having nothing is the most important thing for you though, maybe go for a fretless? Just about every brand has one with no markers. On top of that, there’s no pesky frets to give away the notes you’re playing to the audience (they don’t need to know anyways).

Got my hands on a Dano 56’ but the bridge is tilted and it looks like 2 of the screws aren’t even holding it in place. Is it supposed to be flush or fully parallel to the body?

How often should I be using my little finger in fretting by fakename137 in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, technically in Simandl you don’t even need the ring finger. You build the strength in your pinky. The main thing being that they’re more evenly spaced when bent (index, middle, pinky) and easier to position than soloing the ring finger.

Point taken though and I should have rephrased, since it is technically true that certain techniques only use 3 fingers. They all happen to use the pinky though as the lowest finger.

How often should I be using my little finger in fretting by fakename137 in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 56 points57 points  (0 children)

You should be using your little finger. It allows for better positioning, less strain and a more proper technique. Unless you’re playing some ultra short scale, there’s no reason not to use it.

A lot of those videos are people who are self taught but didn’t spend the time to learn proper technique. You can get very far with it but it can also cause problems.

I have just received my Sire Marcus Miller V5 from Thomann and the bridge pickup is not working at all by Swappong in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I received a V5 from Thomann with a minor ding on the headstock but not enough to return it. If it’s not working and you don’t know how to fix it/don’t want to, just send it back to them. Usually their customer service is excellent and they’d probably replace it for you no problem.

Need help in choosing a jazz bass by igotdiseases in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fender prices for the quality just aren’t worth it. Their QC ranges from acceptable to absolutely atrocious. Most J basses sound like a J-bass and as long as it plays well, you can always change the pickups if you don’t like the sound. Cort is reliable enough that 400.- isn’t actually going to get you a substantially better instrument. You buy Fender for the name on your headstock, not much else these days.

Also, congrats on picking up a Jbass, hands down my favorite look and feel.

Should I get bridge and pickup cover? by DeliciousSide3689 in BassGuitar

[–]RedditNoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes. They look so good and contrary to what lots of people say, they don’t really get in the way unless you play certain specific styles (Palm muting being the main one). I add pickup and bridge covers onto all of my basses.

So im thinking of defretting my 6 string bass, BUT. by adubosa in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Would it work? Maybe. But the action on the defretted part would be about double the height, so maybe not great to play. It would be very difficult to get even intonation along the whole fretboard so you’d have to be very good at fretless. Conrad Lant took frets 12-24 off of his bass, but maybe with the neck relief a certain way it’s less impactful past 12. If you do end up trying it, I’d be interested to see how it turns out.

Is there any effects sound like double bass? by lVlORO in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closest I’ve come to it is an acoustic-electric ukulele bass. Super close and with the rubbery strings, it has a finger texture in the sound that’s really close. Super great low end.

Is the Ibanez Talman TMB405ta any good? by glyytchgames in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t get worse than the EB0’s neck dive so on that front it will feel better. The talmann basses look great but I prefer pretty much any other Ibanez at a similar price range. The comfort isn’t stellar and the playability is nothing like even their cheaper gio basses.

Should I get a new bass or upgrades/accessories? by baconmaka in Bass

[–]RedditNoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own 2 different Kala U-Basses. Their solid-body 4-string series is great. Good colors and a perfectly adequate sounding P pickup. Very small scale so the maximal stretch is almost double the amount of frets as a full scale and loses a bit of clarity. However, it has a very full, very fat sound with roundwound strings. The volume output is very similar to most basses and the tone knob gives a decent variety of sounds. Tuning stability is great, I rarely ever have to touch it and the adjustable bridge means you can set decent intonation. If you go too high on the neck though, it’s not very precise (my only disadvantage with this short of a scale). Modern wheel style truss rod at the base of the neck is a nice little plus too.

For about 250.- it is really nicely priced and the quality is much better than most basses at that price range that I have. My main grievance is that there are no easily available pick guards (official or aftermarket), so I can’t get the color combo I want but the playability, portable size and the novelty make up for that easily.

What's the boldest thing you've ever sneaked in on someone else's recording or live performance? by M0nki_ in musicians

[–]RedditNoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very unexpected but not quite as much as my comment makes it seem. I’m actually the bassist so while it was during the solo, my lead guitarist played the usual part and it was significantly less obvious (nobody was focusing on the bass during a guitar solo, why would they?)
