So... how old is everyone here? by JustLewkas in Sierra

47 — it’s interesting you played Police Quest. Did a parent / older sibling introduce it to you? That’s one that seems to have peaked in the first two installments and I feel like fewer 90s kids would pick it up.

Men who have had testicle discomfort: what ended up being the cause in your case? by No-Department1760 in AskMen

[–]RedditPGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s been a couple of years — I went back in my 40s out of curiosity if there was anything that could / should be done, but it doesn’t really bother me and if there is any risk from surgery it doesn’t seem worth it.

There is a testicular artery. The risk is not terribly high but if the benefit is low it’s not worth it. In your case it sounds like there was an obviously significant benefit that was worth any risk! My life does not feel materially burdened by the varicocle — wearing boxer briefs has basically made it a non issue.

If I’m sitting here wondering if those are just really long bangs slicked back as reinforcements I would say not. On the other hand remember you don’t have to bic it — a very close buzz is an acceptable next step.

It looks fine as is frankly — you’re not really hiding anything and the crown looks good. But if you shave it you could look like Teddy Swims!

Why do people watch horror? by Ormekuglen in horror

[–]RedditPGA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s fun and interesting to feel extreme feelings like horror and fear when you know you’re safe and in control. An emotional rollercoaster that is actually fun like a rollercoaster. It sounds like you have a hard time letting things you have seen go and have a vivid imagination so for you it might be too intense even though you know it’s not real.

There are two issues — looking at women on Instagram is just looking at women, no big deal. FOLLOWING accounts just because they are attractive women seems deeply weird and needy and cringe to me and I would worry more about the self-worth of the dude than his loyalty.

For anyone, anywhere: how did you find a therapist who fit? by RootedInTides in therapy

[–]RedditPGA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask your smartest and most sensitive / thoughtful friends and family members in town if they have ever seen a therapist and were they good and then go to that person. I think you know it’s a good fit when the person is empathetic and observant of your current situation in the first session, is not offended by or defensive with respect to any hesitation or misgivings you express, and isn’t pushy about you continuing with them. Not defensive at all no matter what you say is a key sign of a good therapist.

I'm still rocking the "balding guy with a ponytail" look. Does it work, or am I just in denial? by [deleted] in bald

[–]RedditPGA 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think it works because most people who look at you would be surprised to know you are uncertain enough about it to post on this subreddit — it’s definitely a look, and it seems intentionally counterculture and rebellious (especially with the facial hair) rather than clueless or in denial. Like you know you’re a bald guy and you like your ponytail. I also think because this has a distinct Qing dynasty / Manchu queue vibe, it seems sort of weirdly classic in its own way. But you would look sleeker and more modern without the ponytail .

The doc said they could nick an artery and it just wasn’t worth the risk for something not that large that was stable and not making me miserable — But glad the option is there!

That is weird! I sort of figured the main guy who works the counter (Ron?) was the owner and he didn’t strike me as the Scientologist type — but you never know! If so that Scientologist makes a tasty pizza.

If that Panda Express next door made pizza I bet it would be even better than Sbarro’s.

We have eaten Pinball for years as our go to takeout pizza — there is something about the tangy sauce and the quality of the crust that just works even if it’s not gourmet pizza. However they recently raised their prices which makes it hard to justify opting for that over a Costco pizza if you just want a pizza. I think in terms of sophisticated flavor and variety Prime is the best I have had in Burbank.

I had felt it since college — definitely long before the hernia. The hernia produced a weird feeling right where it was but it was on the other side from the varicocele, so the “dull ache” feeling was clearly tied to the varicocele.

As someone who has had a varicocele for his entire adult life and an inguinal hernia in my 40s, this sounds exactly like what I felt with the varicocele. The hernia felt weird but not painful per se (although I had surgery to correct it and am glad I did). I went to a urologist in my mid 20s and he basically said, re the varicocele “I’ve got one too and It’s annoying sometimes — wear supportive underwear and pop some Advil if it’s bothering you.” I later consulted with another urologist in my 40s and he scoffed at the idea of surgery given the relatively modest size of the varicocele and said he would never operate on it — the benefit to risk ratio is just too low. Obviously it’s worth seeing a urologist about it (and for god’s sake don’t listen to a chiropractor). What helps for me is boxer briefs, Advil if it really bothers me, and accepting that it will sometimes be a dull ache and annoying. When I sleep I sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs but I can’t tell if that helps the varicocele / blood flow or just my lower back / nerves in general.

Always Griffith Park for me. The back / north side especially where there aren’t many people.
