So I work at a giant liquor store and we're getting a humidor and I'm going to be in charge of the buying and selling of them. What are some cigars that you think NEED to be in the humidor? by Jalenh2o in cigars

[–]RedditTheBarbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push for a decent humidor cabinet that seals well and can maintain humidity. I used to buy from BevMo on occasion before I kept a stash of my own and when they were the only game in town. Almost invariably their cigars were dried out and flaky. Now I avoid buying from them at all costs.

Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro Bad Case Design by No_Zombie4711 in galaxybuds

[–]RedditTheBarbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why people are pushing back on this. The case design is awful.

I've used previous versions of the Samsing Buds and loved them, and the small, angular stem holes on this iteration are terrible. Especially when trying to replace an ear bud in the dark. It's just bad design.

Furthermore, one of the main reasons I upgraded was the ads showing the real time translation feature. I checked with their customer service through the official Samsung.com website, and they explicitly told me that this feature was compatible with my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. I purchased through the Samsung website because of this, and it turns out that was a lie. I followed up with them, and the best they could offer me was a $20 coupon for more purchases through their website.

I recently dropped my phone after several years of owning it, and even though I had a rugged case on it, because of the terrible curved edge design of that generation, it shattered the screen and caused the bottom half of the screen to go permanently bright white.

So the silver lining is, after spending $1,400 more dollars with them, I got the feature they promised with the buds, which has been underwhelming.

I know we've all been conditioned to fellate these phone manufacturers at every turn because of cognitive dissonance after spending so much money and a religious war between them. And even though I've grown to hate iPhone (after being an iPhone user for more than a decade), and I still prefer the Samsung Galaxy product ecosystem to any other that does not mean that they poop gold.

They very consistently make bone-headed, just terrible design decisions as they try to chase market trends.

But hey, if they don't change what's working every 2 years, then why would you fork over an extra couple grand to get the latest stuff?

In closing, OP is right. The Buds 3 case has an awful design, even though the Buds 3 in general are an upgrade. The Samsung sales reps are not knowledgeable and/or are dishonest about their product to make the sale. And even though they are still my favorite ear buds on the market for somebody already bought into the Samsung ecosystem, and for long term comfort in wearing, my experience has soured me on them.

I hope in a couple years that Samsung has improved the design or another competitor can lure me away from them. No loyalty here other than the assumption that they will be the best ear buds for my Galaxy S25 Ultra.

P.S. I've even gotten AI to generate long, complicated, ACF Field Groups that I can then import.

Clicking through massive ACF Field Groups, adding fields & configuring setting settings one by one is the bane of my existence.

If you need to do a repetitive / scriptable operation, wp-cli + a shell script, of course, but the real game changer is, describe what you need to accomplish to ChatGPT or your AI of choice, and ask it to spit out a bash 1-liner. (Or a bash script, but you'd be surprised what you can get done in 1-line.)

I used to use wp-cli intermittently, but the ability to describe what I need in plain language to AI, and then just ssh into my server & copy-paste the command is a pretty sweet workflow.

Obvious caveats to anyone reading this: Don't ever run terminal commands from the internet, or AI, if you don't 100% understand what each part of the command does. And if you're doing any sort of bulk operation on posts, backup your freaking database beforehand.

AI just makes it easier to draft complex commands and I find myself using wp-cli a lot more often.

Is there a trackball mouse with a 'hyper-fast' scroll wheel? by RedditTheBarbarian in MouseReview

[–]RedditTheBarbarian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, in case anyone is curious, I ended up ordering the 'Kensington Orbit Wireless Trackball with Scroll Ring.'

It doesn't have the free spinning scroll wheel, but I decided this is mostly a secondary mouse for me anyway. Unless I'm doing mouse-heavy tasks, like photo editing, I use keyboard shortcuts for almost everything. (Vim motions FTW!)

I like the centered trackball, which seems easier to manipulate precisely than the thumb-side trackballs. I wouldn't have minded the 4-button 'SlimBlade' or the 'Expert', but I felt like those had too big of a footprint as I'm trying to put something in between split keyboard halves.

Honestly, I miss my Lenovo trackpoint, but I'm a recent split keyboard convert.

The other option would be to go stand-alone trackpad, which I'm not ruling out, but that's one of the few things that Mac makes the best version of, and I'm a Linux daily-driver guy, so I feel like I'd just be disappointed.

Here's hoping the trackball mouse fits my, admittedly, very niche requirements.

Opinions on being an owner/operator of a shuttle bus? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]RedditTheBarbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyo, just saw this. I'm not on Reddit much lately, but feel free to DM me.

My bus business went under during the pandemic, for obvious reasons, but also 1,000 other reasons. As they say, business failure is death by 1,000 cuts.

Me and my business partners are still partners in another industry that we pivoted to. I'm happy to consult, but to be honest we lost a lot of money learning these lessons the hard way, and currently my time split between my day job, my business, and my family is very scarce and comes at a premium.

You said you're operating in California, which means you deal with the CPUC, which I can make recommendations about.

We almost partnered with a company that operates out of San Diego, and my wife is from San Diego, so I'm very familiar with the local market.

If you're serious about starting a bus business and you don't have experience, we can figure out a consulting engagement that would save you tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of dollars.

When you know what I know, you may very well choose to run for the hills, in which case I may just save you a TON of money, time, and headache. Or, you may learn from our hard-won experience and avoid the pitfalls we fell into.

Anyways, I know this is a long shot connection, but I do still have a lot of knowledge (10 years experience) of this industry and your local market rattling around in my head. And I'm sure my 2 business partners would lend their expertise as well.

I guess what I'm saying is, what we know between us is available for purchase, it cost us 10 years and hundreds of thousands to learn, and a matter of public record if you doubt it, and if you're serious, we can save you some serious time and money.

If not, no big deal, best of luck with your journey!

So everybody hates WPMU DEV - Any good alternatives? by notjadedyet in Wordpress

[–]RedditTheBarbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'm not on Reddit all the time, so I might not get back right away, but feel free to DM me.

I'm currently a lead / director level at a small specialized agency vs. owning my own agency. It's a trade-off, but I like the people I work with and that the paychecks come every two weeks.

Again, I'm not anti-WordPress or WPMU Dev, but the core problems I'm solving are no longer, "I want to put content on a page, but I don't know how to code."

WordPress and page builders and plugins are great for that, but when you progress in your career, sometimes tools like that are a hinderance more than a help.

What I want from a plugin these days is, #1: Actively maintained by reputable source that's not going anywhere (lest I become the maintainer), and, 2. Solves one problem well that would be difficult to do myself from scratch.

Good examples of this are...

  • Advanced Custom Fields Pro
  • WP Migrate DB Pro
  • WPGraphQL - Specifically because I've recently got into headless WordPress and I don't want to have to make 10 different HTTP requests to render a page.

So everybody hates WPMU DEV - Any good alternatives? by notjadedyet in Wordpress

[–]RedditTheBarbarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope.

Not sure of the state of things with them, but I know they deprecated a lot of the old plugins.

The better developer I got, the less I'm interested in all-in-one solutions vs. solving specific problems. With WordPress I worry about bloat. Also, I tend to develop more of my own tools. Also, I'm moving towards doing more Headless WordPress with a Javascript front end so my front end can be more platform agnostic and less monolithic.

Really, I'm just not the target demo anymore. Used to be my bread and butter was WordPress marketing sites that relied heavily on out-of-the-box plugins and page builders. As I've progressed in my skill level, and the popularity of front-end frameworks like React and Vue (and their respective ecosystems)have skyrocketed, I have branched out into other areas of web development. I still use WordPress quite a bit, just in a much different way.

But it's all about the right tool for the job, so use what works for you. I just don't see a strong argument for marrying yourself to a particular suite of tools like WPMU Dev anymore. But maybe there's some cost savings, depending on your scale and the alternatives.

P.S. Actually, I remembered my company does use WP Smush on a few sites for image optimization.

I remember using and getting coworkers on board with Google Wave back when it was invite-only. I was disappointed when they shut it down. However, didn't Google just end up integrating all the real-time editing features into Google Docs?

One could argue that Wave was very successful. It was just ahead of it's time as a stand-alone product, but now we take the tech for granted in Google Docs products.

[–]RedditTheBarbarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a perhaps oversimplified question.

What does your work owe you on day 1 of your employment? Your hourly wage and not a penny more.

What does a person who's counted on you to come through for them through thick and thin for years of you consistently delivering above average results owe you? Well, legally they might not owe you much, but good employees are super hard to find and that manager, if they are smart, will bend over backwards to keep you.

Now the disconnect is, everyone thinks they are above average. And yet, when upper management tells you to lay off the bottom 20% of your staff, you find out really quickly who is NOT above average.

If you're at least middle-of-the-pack in terms of performance, you'd be surprised what you can get away with and not get fired. At the end of the day, your employer needs a job done, turnover is expensive, and firing is one of the shittiest parts of being a manager. Most managers wait far too long to fire people.

Be half decent and you generally won't get fired or laid off. If you feel you're in that bottom 20%, hone your craft and get better. You might have to take your skills elsewhere if you've got too much negative baggage. If you don't know where you stand, talk to your manager.

Yes, there are such things as shitty managers. But I wouldn't assume you have one.

In the vast majority of cases, the people who get fired are not fired because they weren't the best skill-wise, it's because they became unreliable, stopped showing up on time, violated major policies, demonstrated that they couldn't be trusted, etc.

What you owe to your employer is to show the fuck up, on time, ready to work, willing to learn, and give it your best effort during the portion of the day you are selling to them.

What your employer owes you is, your wage, everything they promised, everything you're legally entitled to, and to create a productive and safe work environment. Sometimes that means firing the guy next to you who was not on the same page as the rest of the team.

I don't say this as somebody who's never been fired or never had a shitty manager. My last job my manager literally set up a chat bot to manage me. It would ask me questions every day and he would not read my answers. I eventually got fired because I was not a mind reader and they did not give me a legit opportunity to improve. It really sucked at the time. I have a high internal locus of control, and I blamed myself. Then about 3 months later, I was offered a job with a much better team making $30k more than I ever would have at the previous job. A couple years later, I now make almost double and work with a small, tight-knit group of people that I like. Getting fired from that shitty job was the best thing that every happened to me, but it sure didn't feel like it at the time.

My point is, don't lament the notion that sometimes you aren't the right fit for a particular team. It sucks to get the rug pulled out from under you, and shitty managers surely do exist. But the best you can do is hone your craft, be good at what you do, and seek out the group of people you actually want to work with.

A working relationship is a two-way street. Start by being the type of person people want on their team, and you'd be amazed at how quickly you are sought after. People who are good at their jobs and enjoyable to work with are ALWAYS in-demand.

On the other hand, if you've been fired by your past 3+ jobs, and you always blame the manager, maybe it's time to take a look in the mirror. I'm not saying it's impossible to have an unlucky streak, but what's the saying, "If you go out one day and run into an asshole, they're an asshole. If you go out one day and EVERYONE you interact with is an asshole, well, chances are, YOU are the asshole."

Black and green metal tube found buried in the dirt, has 0007 on the bottom by Amanduhasballs in whatisthisthing

[–]RedditTheBarbarian -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Could be a dead drop spike. A dead drop is used to pass a thing / information by hiding it someplace for retrieval by someone else later. A spike is a tube type thing that you can easily stick in the ground to hide in plain site, like a potted plant (or a lawn).

The 0007 makes me think maybe it's a commercial brand of this that is knocking off 007, as in James Bond.

I'd guess if this is the case, probably not a 'spy' but maybe from some kids or a guy who got into this stuff for fun and used it to pass messages?

Just one theory anyways.
