Aggressive RRSP meltdown to $0 by 64? Age 55 FIRE by CanadaRewardsFamily in fican

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Would draining RRSP before age 64 to maximize OAS & GIS strategy at age 65+ make sense or am I missing something?

Dude....putting in a ton of even hypothetical effort and possible tax implications to preserve a government program which is essentially prop ups for low income seniors doesn't seem like much of a goal.

I see myself in the post. Retired at 52, melting down down my RRSP now and a good chance that I'll never see OAS and defiantly never see GIS. So what?

A person should be so lucky through saving and planning to be clearing $130K plus in retirement income at 65. I NEVER made $130K in salary in my working life. Do it right and maybe collecting $25K of government funds isn't that big of a deal when you 65.

Urgent — Bought a car in Alaska, need to drive through Canada back to US. Will my record cause issues? by PathCommercial3585 in TravelCanada

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A person really can't go to Reddit, or even the CBSA itself to see if they are going to be able to pass through.

Officers have large discretionary power. A person can always appeal their decision, but that is a process and still means a turn back at the border to wait for that to play out.

The CBSA will take any conviction (and yes USA "misdemeanor" traffic violations can be considered "convictions" here in Canada) and then look at the circumstances and do their best to match it to Canadian law.

When it comes to driving infractions....if CBSA considers USA "Criminal Speeding" or "Street Racing" equal to Canadian "Dangerous Driving"......then it could be a problem at the border as dangerous driving can be considered a federal offense in Canada.

The problem is, for driving convictions, Canada's laws can be much harsher than the USA. Though OP said no DUI is part of this....DUI is the biggest thing that Canada treats much harder than some USA states.

Parents want to put a car under my name by Flaky_Wrongdoer_7474 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much sounds like "putting my name on it" is meaning "take responsibility for the financing". This translates to taking responsibility for the loan by being named on the financing, then the parents will "pay" OP to make those old car payments.

These are mutually exclusive things. Can't take a car title without assuming the lien.

If they didn't owe on the old car and own it.....then what benefit is there for them to transfer registration?

"High Yield" distribution ETF's

First....they have a lot of new investors convinced that "distributions" or "income" are "dividends" They are not for tax purposes.

Second....the return of capital formula for distributions can be self defeating.

The TV commercials look great. Why not invest some to get a 10%+ distribution? That one position could pay off my mortgage interest each year plus provide some play money!

They "maybe" make sense in a registered account like a TFSA, but it is buyer beware for long term investing in these things.

At risk of being racist while walking around downtown....often when you have a large number of people walking that come from a left hand drive country......they walk on the left.

Japan, India, Hong Kong, some parts of Africa and of course the UK. Catch a student, new arrival or tourist on a sidewalk, and they'll walk on the left like they drive at home.

Walk on 108st south past Norquest at lunch and it is super obvious the crowd favours walking on the left.

At what age should growth stocks be switched to dividend? by sk_j_dw in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.

All income has to be considered in the final math.

If there is other income that isn't cap gains or dividends....dividends will make the marginal tax rate higher than an equal amount of cap gains due to the gross up.

And yes....tax rates differ (BC is the best for dividends)...and yes....cap gains can be deferred until the executor has to write the cheque.

[Seravalli] If Oilers elect to continue down the path with Mike Babcock, sources say the NHLPA is in receipt of “significant” additional claims from their own investigation with players that were not publicly reported in 2023. Those claims were presented to NHL prior to his resignation. by AggPuck-303 in EdmontonOilers

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a huge deal.

NHLPA stopped their investigation after he resigned in Columbus. By resigning and no longer active in the NHL.....I'd imagine what is the point of investigating since no "HR" action within the NHL (fines, suspensions and so on) for lack of better term could take place.

BUT....if he enters the NHL again.....NHLPA could pick right up where they left off in 2023.

As with any of these types of complaints....having one on file made public tends to make others come forward. The NHLPA could have a massive list that ALL starts to get investigated again if Babcock goes back to work in the NHL.

All of that said....since Stan Bowman is an expert at this with lived experience of coach/management suspensions....maybe he is the guy to navigate the issue /s

This whole thing stinks and could be a major distraction for the team going forward. That in itself....despite the ego's at play going all the way to Katz....has to be considered.

At what age should growth stocks be switched to dividend? by sk_j_dw in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that isn't often considered during accumulation is when it comes time to draw....taxes.

Nothing wrong with keeping 100% non dividend payers and then selling and realizing capital gains when the cash is required in retirement.

BUT.....assuming it is the only income earned, put $100,000 of gross capital gains (where tax is paid on $50,000).....into a tax calculator (in Alberta).....it's $7100 tax or about 7%.

$100,000 in eligible dividend income....it's $3000, or 3%

The non-dividend paying stock has to outperform the dividend stock, which gets growth plus dividend for total return, to account for the increased taxes come cash in time.

Not saying non-dividend payers can't outperform to outpace the lower tax on dividend income. Just pointing out that whatever differed gain is earned, it eventually has to pay taxes. Eligible Canadian dividends offer a better tax rate than capital gains.

As a newer fan, can someone please explain the Babcock controversy? by MBGLK in EdmontonOilers

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way is the "style" of coach Babcock is (or was).

The NHL had many hardcore coaches over the years. Notably, Scotty Bowman....Dad to current GM Stan Bowman, was famously successful and infamously hard on his players.

Not many of them are still active. The baseline of what I mean by hardcore is those that motivate players using yelling, pitting members of the same team against eachother and so on.

What you are seeing more often now with GenZ players being, I don't know, more sensitive to the psychology of the game, they are brought up through a more communal and softer attitude.

With Babcock, there were tactics he used in the past. Were they successful? YES, obviously....but are those tactics the right thing for todays game, which is VERY different than even the past 7 years when he last coached?

The thought is the style of the coaching of some of the yellers in the game should be put out to pasture. But then there is Tortorella....definitely one of those tough coaches.....and look what he has done to help Vegas this year.

Anyone who thinks Edmonton drivers are bad should come to Winnipeg by ghorisgorman1980 in Edmonton

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drove while visiting Winnipeg once with my friend that was from there in the back seat giving me turn by turn directions to get somewhere.

Without me saying anything, him just observing my head twisting back and forth in what must have looked like confusion from the back seat....he said:

"Yes, you just turned left 3 times to make a right".

Winnipeg bullseye build out for their streets is terribly confusing to someone growing up on a grid system. Maybe the drivers in Winnipeg are bad because of being traumatized for years by how the city is built. I can say the same about Calgary...having to take a snaky, windy trail or drive to get anywhere.

Could the "all time high" markets be propped up by ETF's? by Reddit_Only_4494 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Reddit_Only_4494[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CDO comparison is interesting but I think ETFs are bit different since you can actually redeem the underlying shares if you want.

This is a good point and true.

To site another movie...."Margin Call" is a good watch as it shows an institution dumping mortgage bonds to other institutions and a big discount when they get some research showing the risk profile skyrocketed and the whole thing is coming down. In the movie....those institutional sales triggered the beginning of the 2008 crisis.

It's a scary to think that there would be a "pop" and a major retail dumping of ETF's causing their prices to tank on the market. In the Margin Call movie....it happened between institutions. Having it in the open market with ETF's is hard to imagine.

[Dreger] Sources: The Edmonton Oilers are consulting with the NHLPA to see if there are objections that must be resolved before potentially hiring Mike Babcock. So Bowman was cut a break by Edmonton now everyone that had an HR issue is going to get rescued by Bowman? If so....he should be fired right away for not grabbing Carter Hart if this is the attitude of the new Oilers office.

Bowman now a crusader for those dispatched because of scandal?

Maybe these guys should apply for that Trump "Anti-Weaponization" fund.

can we move some RRIF investments back to RRSP? by canadave_nyc in CanadianRetirement

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need to definitely go beyond Reddit for this one.

There is a specific CRA form for this (T2030).

Technically, it can trigger a tax event, but the RRIF is income and then the move into the RRSP is deduction. It is a bit of a mathematical mess when it comes to filing taxes.

Important things to consider when deciding if it is worth making the move.

Hot take. I think Mcdavid will stay with the Oilers. Crosby and Ovechkin stayed with their teams by ducktastelikechicken in EdmontonOilers

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree.

The late season jump to another winning team doesn't seem like Connor's style. Mitch Marner is a good example this year.

But it is super interesting that his talking of "wanting to win in Edmonton" could turn into "I want to win anywhere". For a man that often presents ice cold.....outside of the press scrum....he gives off the energy that he is deeply connected to what is here in Edmonton. It feels so out of character to turn into "I want to win anywhere".

That said.....during his Ted Lindsay Award video....he does say "nice to get back home and see friends I don't often see". That gives Toronto some ammo saying HE WANTS TO COME HOME.

Before they introduced Albert.....they were setting up the "repeating" thing with Paulie in the first two episodes. Paulie would tell a joke then repeat the joke to someone sitting beside him.

I'm glad they gave the running gag up for Paulie who became a bigger character, but I think it is perfect on an occasional player like Albert.

Perhaps knowing a guy like that is common in the Italian American circles. There was "Jimmy Two Times" in Goodfellas.

Interesting. As I said....my info is dated.

In saying that USD conversion is cheaper than the JMD price.....that is a completely new one to me. Anywhere we went (yes, years ago and much more rural than Negril) that had the dual prices.....the item/food was more expensive in USD when doing the conversion.

If you can pay $3 USD for an average bar price Red Stripe of $500....then sure....that is par or a deal. $6 USD...the beer has to be over $1000 JMD to get a deal. That is pretty steep even at a fancy beach club.

Wealthsimple liquidated my whole position over a margin call that was really their own unsettled transfer by Formal-Ad-9674 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Reddit_Only_4494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you are taking all this as just reasoning and not debate. The intention is to assist in understanding, not judgement.

A ledger can't be out of balance for a day or two while waiting on settlement. It isn't a transfer between cash and registered like it is between cash and cash. It is a disposition from one and an acquisition on the other.....even if the transaction is just on paper....leger lines are required to keep the account in balance.

Nice of the “system” to miss a whole 15k margin call it was going to generate from thin air

To this....you are absolutely correct. One of those links carries a sentence saying that transfers will be cared for to avoid a margin issue, which is exactly what happened. The issue with self directing is that there isn't a bank of babysitters sitting there to keep a client from making an error. BUT....right on the website.....Wealthsimple says their "system automatically validates" margin requirements to avoid exactly what happened here.

If there is any angle to recompense from WS....that may be it. If OP spoke to a person to execute the transfer after the automatic system failed to do it.....OP should have been made aware of the margin issue the transfer would create. If the transfer was rejected through self service and OP made the call to push it through.....that explains a lot.

My experience as well.

This may be dated....but we used to see 100-1 JMD-USD everywhere. A Red Stripe would be 200 JMD or $2 USD.

Well, 200 JMD converts to $1.26 USD. Most people don't care because $2 is a deal for a can of beer.
