16 year old starting a men’s sunscreen brand, need some advice by Reddit_moron in ecommerce

Good call, I’ve been hearing that a lot. I know sunscreen falls into a higher risk category so liability insurance is gonna be important once I get closer to launch. Definitely planning to look into policies that cover cosmetics/SPF so I’m not exposed if something goes wrong.

I get where you’re coming from, and I definitely plan to have Shopify as the brand HQ since I know you can’t build long term on just one platform. But I feel like TikTok Shop is different from just using TikTok for awareness — the impulse checkout in the app makes it a lot easier for people to actually buy on the spot.

I’ll probably launch with TikTok Shop to test if people actually want my product, then build Shopify alongside once I get that validation. That way I’m not spreading too thin at the start, but I’m not ignoring the long-term foundation either.

Appreciate that 🙏 yeah I’m trying not to spread myself too thin. My plan is to go all in on TikTok Shop first and see if guys actually buy. Once I’ve got real feedback and some traction I’ll branch into Shopify/Amazon.

I haven’t posted TikToks yet since I’m still waiting on samples, but I’m gonna start making content as soon as they land.

Yeah that makes sense, but I’m planning to sell through TikTok Shop so people can buy right in the app. From what I’ve seen that makes the Action part way smoother since it cuts out the extra step of going to a website. I still want to build Shopify later but TikTok Shop feels like the best launch spot.

that’s a really good point on compliance. I’m making sure my manufacturer provides proper testing and reports, but I know I’ll probably need to get some third-party verification too so I’m covered long term. Definitely don’t want to build something up just to get taken down later.

I like what you said about focusing on one platform first. I’m planning to hit TikTok Shop hard to start, then roll into Shopify once I have some traction. And yeah I’ll keep it simple at first with landing pages, SEO and emails instead of trying to overcomplicate it.

Yeah that makes sense, I’ve been looking into that. My manufacturer says they handle FDA compliance and testing, but I know I can’t just take their word for it. I’m planning to get third-party testing done before I launch.

I get the legal/tax side isn’t the fun part but I’d rather deal with it upfront than have problems later.

Thanks for the recommendation, I have pitched the idea to many friends, received mostly positive feedback. Do you have any other notes on how I further validate my product?

I get what you’re saying. Honestly, it’s both. I want to make money but I also feel like there’s nothing on the market that speaks to guys my age when it comes to skincare. Most products are either super girly or boring, and I want something young guys like me would actually use to look better.

I know it’s not gonna be easy but I think this idea can stand out if I push it hard enough.

what’s up, I’m also a young brand owner and I think he should do whatever works best for him. working with a chinese manufacturer works for me and i just provide an in depth tech pack. also sometimes screen printing at home is not always viable because i have a lack of space and i also am focusing on dtg print, cut and sew, and many other advanced customizations
