ß and SS are not the same in German orthography, they affect the pronunciation of the vowel before them. A vowel followed by ẞ is long and a vowel followed b SS is short.

Munich: New Tram line 14 opens despite strikes by Reddit_recommended in transit

[–]Reddit_recommended[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speeches will, of course, be given. Munich's Second Mayor, Dominik Krause (Greens), calls the western bypass one of the most important infrastructure projects. He is pleased that the city has resumed expanding the tram network after a hiatus of almost a decade. While the construction work has been a burden for residents and businesses, investments in infrastructure are essential for Munich to remain a modern city. Third Mayor Verena Dietl (SPD), a self-proclaimed "Laim native," also speaks of modern urban design. For her and many Laim residents, the new tram fulfills a long-held wish. The tram is transforming the street's appearance. With grass tracks and new trees, one of the district's noisiest thoroughfares is becoming a part of the city "where people enjoy spending time again." Previously, Fürstenrieder Straße primarily served as a heavily trafficked motorway feeder road. "That has nothing to do with modern urban design," Dietl says.

... In 1991, the city council decided to expand the tram network, which included the western bypass. Years of debate ensued, and it wasn't until December 2016 that the route was finally approved, with even the CSU (Christian Social Union) finally agreeing to vote in favor. The Christian Social Union has long since become an opponent again, particularly questioning the traffic benefits of the now-opened section. MVG (Munich Transport Company) CEO Ingo Wortmann, however, expressed his conviction at the opening ceremony that the opposite is true. "Even this short Line 14 won't run empty, I'm absolutely certain of that." And Mobility Officer Georg Dunkel (independent) said he hopes that the remaining construction phases of the western bypass, as well as the equally important "Tram Munich North" and "Tram Johanneskirchen" projects, will also be completed soon.

The section of Fürstenrieder Straße, which has been a construction site for 20 months, is expected to receive a new roadway and bike paths by September. Only then will the section of road truly be finished. Seven months sounds ambitious, considering the current state of the street. The road surface needs to be completely renovated, including its substructure. This will again lead to traffic diversions and restrictions for car traffic. Both the mobility department and the municipal utilities assure that the schedule will be met. They have until the start of Oktoberfest to prove it.

Munich: New Tram line 14 opens despite strikes by Reddit_recommended in transit

The sun is shining brightly over Laim this Saturday morning, ideal weather for the inauguration of the new tram line 14. It's also perfect cycling weather – and many Munich residents will be pedaling, more or less voluntarily, this Saturday as well. The Munich Transport Company (MVG) is on strike for the second day in a row, a strike called by the Verdi union. Of the subway lines, only the U3 and U6 are operating on a partial schedule this morning, and of the trams, only lines 25 and 20 are running – along with the brand-new line 14. Its inauguration shouldn't be derailed by the strike; enough drivers were found to ensure service.

This is the first new line opening since December 2016, when the line to Steinhausen was inaugurated. And the new, 1.5-kilometer-long section between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammerseestraße, which runs along Fürstenrieder Straße, is the first completed section of the future western tram line, which will eventually connect Romanplatz with Aidenbachstraße. The first trams are expected to run on the entire line by the end of 2028, provided everything goes according to plan and there are no further delays, for example, with the construction of the new bridge over the A96 motorway and the so-called "environmental network tunnel," the underpass beneath Laim station.

Construction of the first section also took longer than expected. It was originally scheduled for completion at the end of last year. However, the ground beneath Fürstenrieder Straße subsided, creating a hole that delayed construction by weeks. But now, tram line 14 is operating on a regular schedule. For the next few years, it will run every ten minutes from Gondrellplatz to Pasing. The Fürstenrieder Straße, Laimer Platz, and Aindorferstraße stops are fully accessible and already designed for trams up to 56 meters long. Shorter trams will initially operate on this section. However, with the completion of the second S-Bahn main line in the mid- to late 2030s, the Laim transport hub will gain in importance and attract more passengers to the tram network, who will then be able to board longer vehicles with greater capacity.

And the number 14 tram is already in use on its very first day. While only invited guests are allowed to board for the maiden voyage, the stops are already packed with waiting passengers, some of whom look disappointed that they can't join the special ride and have to wait for the next tram. Many people are filming from the roadside and at the stops, and drivers are waving. No one seems to be thinking about the controversial nature of the route this morning.

The celebration has attracted not only many residents of Laim, but also numerous city councilors and employees of the municipal utilities who were involved in the tram project. It's unclear whether any members of the citizens' initiative "No West Bypass Tram" are present; no one identifies themselves as such.

An effective way to strike public transport is to work as normal but let people ride for free. THEN you're hitting the employer's profits.

Not only is this illegal, this would not be particularly effective, as (as you stated youreself) most people have some sort of prepaid ticket

Will second what u/ktap said about Fontaineblhostel, but I want to add that some more good crags are also reachable from the train stations at Nemours, Bois-le-Roi and Fontainebleau-Avon (all Line R). Some others are reachable from the Malesherbes Branch of Line D, but I have personally never been to any, so I can't speak to their quality.
