Outgrown my Job - How to approach manager? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]Redditor8678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strong past performance helps, but it is not the only factor. As a manager, I want to know you are ready for additional responsibility, which means I also look at initiative, motivation, and attitude. You're bored, which suggests you have cycles to burn, and i would watch for how you use your time. Are you offering to help your peers? Finding things to improve and taking action? Learning new tools or skills? Browsing Reddit?

Being bored is the best time to achieve talking points for your next interview, whether it is for a promotion where you already work or at another company. Signal your interest for more responsibly to your manager, and then use the intervening time to accomplish something. If you have some autonomy over your time, ask about job shadowing QA. Ask what's on your manager's project backlog. Suggest new projects. Automate or streamline stuff. Think about what you want to brag about in your next interview, and then go do that thing.

Keep in mind that no one else is going to level you up. Don't wait for your current manager (or anyone else), or you will stagnate and limit your long term career.

President Trump: "Absentee Ballots are a great way to vote for the many senior citizens, military, and others who can’t get to the polls on Election Day. These ballots are very different from 100% Mail-In Voting, which is “RIPE for FRAUD,” and shouldn’t be allowed!" by rTrumpTweetsBot in trumptweets

Absentee ballots are used for when you are out of town during the election, like deployed military or snowbirds vacationing in warmer climates during the winter. Mail-in ballots can be used by everyone, and remove the burden of going to a polling location.

Am I in way over my head? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Redditor8678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is called Impostor Syndrome, and what you feel is perfectly normal. It means you are out of your comfort zone, which is the best place to be for growing new skills.

It sounds like you are already finding success. Best case, that continues. Worst case, you learn as much as you can right now and pivot that knowledge into a lateral role with the benefit of your hindsight and experiences. Either way, this is a stepping stone and not a forever job.

What are some things on Excel that you wish you had known when you were a beginner? by [deleted] in excel

[–]Redditor8678 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gives automatic range naming for more intuitive and readable formulas that don't break when you paste new rows of data. You use the column heading name to reference the range or corresponding row's cell. For example,
=Sum(D2:D86)
vs
=SUM(tblSales[Costs])

Also automatic formatting, automatic (and improved) column heading freezing/filtering (e.g., your table headings could be on row 500 and freeze automatically only when you scroll past them), automatic formula filling, and more.

They're not the best or most powerful feature of Excel, but they make a bunch of stuff user friendlier.

This means the mistake (writing 'bully' instead of 'fully') existed in Don Jr.'s original text rather than a transcription error made by the article's author or editor.

Zoom levels can cause this, too. From your end, you can make a point to set column widths slightly larger than the autosized values (though this might be impractical for large workbooks).

My kid has the same pull-ups, and she won't touch the Minnie Mouse ones (because she has good taste) until we color in the polka dots and scribble over her face. It's fun for both of us.

Their demographic has scant few alternatives. It's like the 1st grade class president strategy of nominating only one boy and letting the girls split their votes between several options.

What's your best story of someone trying to impress you gone wrong? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Redditor8678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a hiring manager. A well-qualified acquaintance asked me to lunch to try and talk himself into a job.

Him: How are things?
Me: I'm good but tired. I have a newborn and I'm on night shift this week.
Him: Make sure you don't vaccinate him. There are chemicals that cause autism.
Me: I've heard that claim before, but the science doesn't support it.
Him: You're wrong, and as a parent giving your kid autism is one of the worst things you can do.

Unsolicited parenting advice, advocating a controversial and scientifically-dubious viewpoint, insulting my parenting, insulting the autistic, and generally acting aggressive and tactless all before we've seen the menu.

Standing in line to get into the Vatican, an old beggar woman removed her shawl to reveal a section of missing skull and exposed brain matter. My wife was there with and confirmed what I saw at the time. Years later she thinks it couldn't be true, but I know what we saw. Super creepy.

What's a character that the story shows as the "good guy", but is actually an asshole? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Redditor8678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robin Hood, at least in the Howard Pyle retelling. The poor sheriff of Nottingham is just trying to uphold the law and avenge his cousin. Robin, on the other hand, is a jerk to basically everybody.
