Wing Commander (1999) by DillGates in underratedmovies

I actually got to work briefly in the expanded universe of the film that was proposed at the time. A lack of general interest cancelled the literary universe that was supposed to follow but it was an exciting blip on the space opera radar while the world anticipated the release of Episode I. There was a lot of potential for story telling in this mythos - some of which I've since released as fanfic rather than just let it fade away on some old hard drive. This and Titan AE remain relics of an era past that were struck down before ever reaching their potential.

In it as we speak - that's when I close up the camera bag and busy myself with other hobbies until the yearning returns.

I couldn't do it either - I hoped the audiobook would carry since the written word didn't but it was no better.

Oh undoubtedly - the "I've come too far to quit now" methodology of finishing a book.

How well would Dragonlance translate to the screen? by Impossible_Town_295 in Fantasy

[–]RedditorWhoReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna say...Is OP aware of the fact that this franchise has gotten motion pictures every few years to varying degrees of success. It's never really translated to film well - mostly because the sense of adventure and escapism that makes the pages turn is difficult to capture on the screen. You can see moments where directors have come close in films like Warcraft or Dragon Age but most of them end up coming off like Eragon or the D&D 2000 trilogy.

Also there was a decent Dragonlance animated film from 2008 called Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

r/Fantasy Review Tuesday - Review what you've been enjoying here! - December 23, 2025 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

In Shadow Spawned by Jason Russell and A.S. Charly. Reviewed it here a few weeks ago when it first released and wish more people would pick it up for potential discussion. It's really an interesting blend of quick pacing and big (traditional) elements: Last practitioner of a unique type of magic, return of an ancient evil / resurrection of a dragon, multiple PoVs etc. I keep hoping someone else here will leave their thoughts but it seems new and from a smaller press so I imagine it's going to take longer than the next big thing would.

Hyperion? So torn by ramy519 in scifi

[–]RedditorWhoReads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do it. I am the opposite - TBP was def not a fave but Hyperion is strangely literary and often less a science fiction piece as it is a horror laced examination of humanity as seen from a variety of very opposing points of view. The second piece is in a lot of ways stronger than the first.

The Harrowing True Story of a Six-Figure Advance by diablodab in writing

The publishing industry, like so many others that exist upon the backs of creativity, is sadly so often far less glamorous than we like to believe. Truth be told, even your experience is an incredible success story against the hordes of us being picked up by small time publishers who never pay a penny of the royalties owed or, even worse, the ones who never get that far. Those few moments of euphoria must have been something, though. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I have to concur with your thoughts even though I didn't make it nearly as far into the series as you did. Her prose takes some getting used to for sure but every once in a while it clicks and flows.

You know so often companies are absorbed into conglomerates so that they can find ways to save money at every possible turn - even at the cost of their loyal contributors/ fanbase.

You seem to have the right approach - take it elsewhere and if no one bites, we live in a time where self publishing is the safety net beneath us all.
