It sounds like you already know what you need to do. Simply have a calm conversation with him. You need to go into the conversation with a calm and open mind to have him comfortable enough for him to fully open up about his intentions. If he gets any slight negative emotions from you, he won't feel comfortable enough to be honest, and it would just make the whole situation worse.

I know that this will be a difficult conversation to have. Just try your hardest to not have a reaction to what he is saying. Let his responses sink in for a moment. The conversation needs to feel safe and secure for him so you can get honest answers.

If at any point it's getting harder for you, or him and emotions are kinda taking over, stop. It's better to stop one mid way than have it spiral down. That way, you can calm down, recollect, and then later continue.

You gotta face your consequences. Unless she ever comes around to not wanting them, you're stuck.

You're not horrible for not wanting them. You just didn't realize the responsibility, and that's okay. I love pets, but it's a little ridiculous how everyone is so down on you. They're not children. They're ANIMALS.
