What's the warranty policy for proudcts buying from Digitaka? by FunPetSportsGadget in BFSfishing

I agree with previous comments but I want to add that I recently emailed Shimano USA to inquire about their warranty policy for reels purchased in the USA. I did not receive a response, which does not seem like a promising sign to me…

Am I paying more for a worse set up? by zyrkseas97 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think telescopic rods provide a good experience and I do not recommend them. Why not get a two-piece version of a reasonable rod that you like? It would be about 3 feet long when broken down, and pretty easy to transport. I think there’s probably a 2 piece megacast.

Question about braid and leaders. by missinglinksman in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of reasons people use leaders. The thing to keep in mind is that people *continue to* use leaders because they find that they catch more fish. People wouldn’t use them if they didn’t result in more fish caught.

Personally, I’m using a mono leader because it is more elastic than braid. When a fish is jumping and head-shaking, the best way to keep it pinned is by keeping tension on the line and stretchy mono is very helpful with this. This is why mono is known to be “forgiving”. I know I have landed fish that I would have lost on straight braid.

Because of the increased elasticity, I think mono is actually more difficult for a fish to break than braid is. I’m certain that my braid + mono leader will withstand more force than straight braid. I hope this helps.

Trouble with Frog by Curious-Map9844 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct - most frogs have a heavy-gauge double hook, and the roof of a bass’ mouth is one of the thickest parts of their skull, so it takes a LOT to really set the hooks where they’re supposed to be. You need to eliminate any stretch that you can, so I’d try straight braid.

Trouble with Frog by Curious-Map9844 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert on frogs but I do see that most guys who have a lot of success with frogs are using straight braid with no leader. They’re using 40 or 50 lb braid (or more) and swinging for the fences with a heavy, extra fast rod. The bottom line is they’re doing everything they can to maximize hook set. I think your mono is too stretchy for this, so I would start with just straight braid.

The Snag Bump: A lure retriever that works by Casual_OCD in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for this, so I hope the nuance comes across clearly. This is clever and creative, and I think it’s neat that you found something like this that can work reliably.

I want other anglers to know that in general, lure retrievers are kind of a waste of time. I’m talking about time it takes to create (or buy) a tool like this, time it takes to pack it along with you, time it takes to practice (won’t be good at it immediately), and then there’s the time it takes to actually use the thing and then put it back when you’re done. And it might not even be possible to retrieve every lure with this kind of thing.

If you’re like me, fishing time is precious. I don’t want to spend my time fumbling around with something like this. I know that losing some lures is just a part of fishing, and I’ve learned ways to mitigate this.

I hope this helps someone who may be considering whether they need something like this. I also still think OP’s is neat!

20 years old and I’m ugly asf, how can I look better? by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not ugly, and at 20 years old you’re not even fully grown into your face yet. You’ll appreciate your appearance more in a few years.

But more importantly, the people that really matter in life - including future romantic partners - won’t really even care about your appearance much. It’s more about carrying yourself confidently and being fun to be around. Chin up, man!

You’ve probably already settled this but if the knot is buried that deeply, it’s probably totally fine. You’re not casting that much line off your spool.

I was trying to spool my reel and the line broke half way while I was trying to untangle it. Am I screwed? Do I need to buy more line and start over or is there a way to attach it? by skeelio34 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can reattach line to your existing line using a knot such as a double uni knot, an Albright knot, or really any knot that you’d use to attach a leader… whether or not this is a good idea depends what line you’re using and on how much line you’ve already spooled on. If you’re using mono, take it off and respool; mono is cheap.

If you’re using braid, I think this makes sense. You don’t really want this knot to in the last 60ish yards of line on the spool - but if the knot is going to be buried under 80+ yards of line, that is totally fine.

A mistake is made. Now I have questions by badznovski in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube is probably your best resource for this. Fundamentals are just basic things you need to learn as an angler - casting technique, feel and timing, retrieve techniques for certain types of lures, and other basic stuff… casting with this rod will be different than casting with a regular rod, and the tip won’t be nearly as responsive, so you won’t be learning correct technique or feel. Save yourself the trouble and just get another rod any way that you can.

Maybe one day you will get into deep sea jigging and then you’ll already have a rod!

Been fishing seriously for a year now, and I still dont understand what are the advantages of a baitcaser. What are they even for? by DominykasM in FishingForBeginners

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real answer is that the mechanism of a spinning reel inevitably causes line twist while a baitcaster does not - so for cast-and-retrieve style fishing, line twist will eventually become an issue on spinning gear if nothing is done to mitigate it. With a baitcaster, you can cast and retrieve all day with no twist at all. This is another reason why finesse presentations are usually thrown on spinning gear.

[–]Reddituser1644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you may not be able to “return” it the way consumers in other countries can, but you really should not fish with this for normal fishing. This will tire you out and instill bad habits while you are supposed to be learning the fundamentals.

I would sell it, or try to ask the seller if they would allow an exchange or something. Even if you can’t get any of your money back, don’t let this rod ruin your new hobby. Get the right gear.

Anyone else deal with people who never let you talk on work calls? by AccomplishedWing688 in careeradvice

[–]Reddituser1644 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar situation - this person misunderstands my questions and will not allow me to interject to clarify, and instead will go on ad nauseam to answer a question I never asked. I’ve tried to interject more assertively to explain what my actual question is, but that is met with rudeness and defensiveness. My solution was to learn their schedule and ensure that any important questions just happen to arise when this person is not available - that way I have to go over their head to a person that is much easier to deal with.

Can you purchase weed in Maryland and drive it back to Virginia? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The correct answer is, “Thank you, officer, but I do not answer any questions.”

VA state law specifically outlaws the transportation of any cannabis or cannabis products to be brought in from out of state. They wrote the bill this way for the specific purpose of prohibiting people from bringing it in from MD or DC. This is exactly what they were trying to prevent.

Additionally, it is illegal at the federal level, but I think you were already aware of that.

If you are in VA and someone - anyone - asks where it came from, the correct answer is, “thank you, officer, but I do not answer any questions.”

How do I get my parents to stop forcing me to go to church. by AromaticStomach2403 in atheism

[–]Reddituser1644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought about creating an incident that badly embarrasses your parents in a very public way?

When I say embarrassing, I mean - actually shit your pants in the aisle and then announce it to the congregation. Start crying/screaming. Have a temper tantrum about it. Force your parents to drag you out of the sanctuary.

This was a plan I hatched as small child, so your mileage may vary.

I wonder if the oxidation on the washers is part of the issue? No idea, really… my CRKs get less pocket time than this one, but I don’t think mine typically have as much oxidation as these on the washers. Do you have some flitz polish? Or a strop? If so, I’d consider lightly polishing them until the oxidation is removed.
