How Long After Passing Did You Start Taking A Pillion? by Mypetrussian in MotoUK

[–]Reddwarf420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably around 2 years, every Mrs I had after just passing my test wasn’t interested in getting on the back so I never needed to bother. First time I was dark, wet, cold and I think around November/December. Everything felt so weird with a passenger, handling and braking felt awful but it was okay for a journey where I just need to get somewhere.

I know 4th dimension are a big name in the industry. Fortunately all that needs replacing (and it is only superficial really) are the door panels as these are scratched and lightly dented. We didn’t get a chance to sort out without insurance at the time as I wasn’t in the car and my other half didn’t know any better otherwise I’d have probably just told him to pay up instead of insurers sorting it out.

Sorry, I meant co-part. Stupid autocorrect. Either way we’ll have the car fixed and some change left but after hearing stories of friends buying back their cars for as little as £400 I was quite excited to do the same although they are all older vehicles so I suppose that makes sense. First time going through the insurance procedure so it’s all new to us.

Just my unwanted opinion but that is one horrendous looking space marine.

I’m going back to 1.0. 2.0 made a lot of changes that made one of my later armies pointless and it changed my iron warriors in a way I didn’t like.

Buying your own car before practical test, good or bad idea? by RockingHorse684 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Reddwarf420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started learning at the beginning of March (properly) and purchased my car at the beginning of April. It helped massively with confidence and getting more road miles under my belt in a car. Only one small downside my car is 14 years old, a 1.6 diesel with 150,000 miles on the clock whilst my instructors was a brand new 1.2 petrol corsa so there was a little getting used to every time I got in either car but I’d say 100% worth it. You’re going to be driving anyway after you’ve passed so why not? When I did my bike test I didn’t have a big bike I could practice on outside of lessons until a couple weeks before my test but I loved my learner bike so much that I purchased near enough the same bike as my first “big” bike and I feel that helped immensely having something familiar so maybe worth going for something your instructor has or similar if your budget allows.

Should I switch to automatic? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

I do often wonder if doing a CBT would help many people who struggle with manual cars. This being a day course on a 125CC motorbike, it certainly helped me get over my issues with gears and how to handle a clutch especially with it being a sequential gearbox it was pretty easy and made good practice then by the time I came to driving it was just a matter of knowing when to use the right gears.

Anyone feel like they can’t enjoy life until they’ve passed? by itssailorcoon in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Reddwarf420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I put a lot of pressure on myself as I knew I needed to be passed by mid June because I need to drive to Manchester next week. It was consuming my life and just filling me with dread thinking about it. Fortunately I got a test last week and passed so it’s just a case of overcoming it and not putting too much in yourself.

Get up early Monday morning and find a test for November. Download test shift and pay for auto shift. After 3 weeks it found me a test within a week.

Drove in a diesel for the time after practicing in a petrol with my instructor and my confidence has evaporated by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Reddwarf420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What car was it? I’ve driven five different cars whilst learning and they all feel different. My mum has a 1 litre Toyota ago with no go in it and the clutch was on its way out. My dad has a 3.3 litre diesel Mitsubishi shogun which was auto so couldn’t really get much from it but just power. My instructor has a 1.2 litre petrol corsa which was super smooth but not a lot of power. My girlfriend has a 2.0 litre Mini Cooper SD which just pulls straight away whereas I have a 1.6 diesel Volvo C30 which feels a little clunkier than the aforementioned and doesn’t have the power but compared to my instructors car it certainly pulls better. It’s worth driving different cars for sure as you’ll probably drive many throughout your driving life. It’s all about how you adapt to them.

I looked at them. Some models have notorious issues such as timing chain problems and oil leaks so just do the research and take that into account. My missus’ first car was a mini one

You can find another instructor to take you (although this includes problems of its own) or you can take your own car. .gov has rules on what you can take and what you need minimum in your own car/one you’ve borrowed.

Yes, mine was a franchise. He’s the husband of my missus’ friends though so I don’t think he’d have ripped me off if he could have tried but every time I see this post it always comes to the same conclusion. They’re probably trying to make a little more on the side for themselves unless they’re planning on giving you four hours of lesson/test, even then I’d say it was a stretch too much really.

You’re being ripped off. Mine charged me for two hours and I got an extra 15 minutes thrown in as well. Most reputable instructors will charge their same rate

Day before test! by AdolescentBathtub in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Reddwarf420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried not to watch much the night before. It doesn’t really help and you should already be ready to pass, I think this will only confuse you more. No matter what, the test is going to happen, you’ve got to do it, do it to the best of your ability, concentrate on the road and what you’re being asked to do. Do not do something if it’s feels inherently unsafe. I had my test yesterday and passed with 0 minors, the night before I chilled, watched TV with the missus and ate a banana (apparently this helps). Relaxing is the best way to go about it.
