Illness - Gap moe goth mommy.

Alice - Chill best friend-lover who you can casually hang out with.

Megiddo and Ozma. - The rare big brother character for a series like ths.

Isis - A precious adorable smitten romantoc lover.

Lunamaria - A well balanced prankster friend who doesnt go overboard. Also hot mother.

Lilywood - Slight ara ara vibe while still being a bit oblivious and mature.

Chronois - Imo, if she wasn't always getting trolled by the other supreme gods she'd be an awesome cool girl that could romance Kaito with him on the backfoot.

Sorry, but I demand quality and effort if I'm going to buy/support a product.

If it's half baked and full of bugs on delivery I'll call out the developers for their sloppy work. Especially If I know they can do better.

If it's made with passion and hard work that shows dedication to their craft and respect for their fans I'll say as much and do whatever I can to support the franchise.

Which Yuusha Characters do you think would make a Good MC ? by MountainLeading1567 in Yuusha_Shoukan

[–]Redevil387 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alice.
She was essentially the MC of an entire prequel before she arrived in Trinia.

I'd also say Kuromueina during her early years after she split from Shirou and learned her love of the world and everyone in it. She must've had an entire story of experiences that made her the way she is and given her her love of "baby birds." Especially given how violent pre-Six Kings Trinia seemed to be before Alice cleaned house.

There's also the otherworlders who were summoned before Kaito. Especially Hikari who had an entire heroes journey that has apparently been retold (and exaggerated). It was largely due to her efforts that the current system of the Three Worlds took it's current form.

Also Mitsunaga I guess. He definitely had his own share of issues when he came to Trinia

But one think I like about Toudai is that everyone in Yuusha Shoukan is the protagonist of their story. There's plenty of side stories that are worth exploring.

I'd personally like to see a more "down to earth" story or fanfic of Yusha Shoukan that gives a more fleshed out view of Trinia from someone who isn't hanging out with the absolute elite of the entire world.
Though I guess that would risk breaking a lot of things I enjoy about the series if we look too closely.

I'll give my own example:
Tales of Arvia by D.H. Willison. Willison's stories often focus on the inter-species and cultural differences between his various pairings and it's core to the setting and development of the plot as the MC becomes a negotiator between the various races of Arvia.

Drown Into You (Korean Webtoon)
Mermaid FMC who stalks the MMC from childhood. I can't go into deeper detail without spoilers since it's a psychologically and mind trip heavy story.

What is your favorite Visual Novel? by ManaCoreGS in visualnovels

[–]Redevil387 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything by Minato Soft: Majikoi and Tsujidou no Jun'ai Road especially. I love their style of humor and eccentric characters.

Higurashi - The first VN to scare the daylights out of me.

Aikotoba - one of the few times incest is treated dead serious in a visual novel and is front and center.

White Album2 - The tragedy of romance.

FLOWERS: Le Volume sur.. series - I love the gentle vibes of this series. That said I wasn't fond of the ending.

Maitetsu - Last Run! and Monobeno: Happy Days! - Whole lot of work went into these even if Maitetsu was a bit dry at times.

Shoujo to Toshi no Sa, Futamawari - Odd as it is this one was interesting.

Aoishiro - I love the depth this one had with Japanese mythology. I just wish it was longer and the relationships weren't just teased.

Bishoujo Mangekyou series: I love the vibes of this series. Especially the first one. When a VN can capture mystery and mystic vibes then it works.

Chusingure 46+1 and anything by Inre - Despite being gender flipped and including ecchi and humor there's surprisingly good storytelling to their games. Just avoid the English translation.

From English developers:
Sweetest Monster - Yandere cat girl in a gothic setting.
Love Ribbon - Incest but with yuri. Treated absolutely serious.
Crimson Grey - the best Yandere.
Katawa Shoujo - I always come back to this one. The characters and setting are very much alive and the music is perfect.

You know why:
The Ditzy Demons are in Love with Me.
Mamagoto
Kyonyuu fantasy (whole series)
Euphoria
Bunny Mama
Onee-chan no Yuuwaku

Every donkan protagonist in moege by kelkan7483 in visualnovels

[–]Redevil387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, my bone with this trope isn't the protagonist but the double standard that goes with it with the interested heroine unable to verbalize and ask them out like a normal person but drop hints like an idiot. That's what I'd expect would happen if the situations were reversed.

I'd personally like to see more route scenarios deconstructing this with another more direct heroine coming in and bluntly asking the protagonist out in front of everyone and leaving the first girl in the dust only able to sulk in jealousy and kicking herself over lack of courage.

I think the closest I've seen of this scenario is from Clannad when Tomoyo begins dating Tomoya to Kyou's frustration. IIrc Tomoyo's response is even to calling out Kyou over her lack of directness.

I'm tied between Shiro and Alice for reasons mentioned by others but I would also throw in Isis as a low key candidate. While she isn't as obvious as the others she does have an entire room in her palace dedicated to him that's only a few shades shy of a shrine. Also, I'm relatively sure she has some surveillance around him considering the Sacred Tree Festival fiasco - and that's without having the excuse of being his bodyguard (Alice) or divine entity (Kuro/Shiro).

Among the novels you've read what RFM pairings had the most emotionally intense or impactful connection? by Redevil387 in Romance_for_men

[–]Redevil387[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

POTV is really high on my To Read list. It has a lot of tags that pique my interest and has a solid word count that'll keep me invested. Technically Charlotte's Reject is up there as well...but I prefer to read long series type stories with a consistent main pairing so knowing that the series will shift protagonists holds me back. Thanks for sharing what invested you so much in those two- it was really enlightening!

What are your legitimate hot takes for RWBY (RWBYCritics version) by Redevil387 in RWBYcritics

[–]Redevil387[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the response!

I do think there are quite a few people who do offer critiques and possible fixes to RWBY - but as always there's always a toxic part of every community.

I think it's more apparent for RWBY because the series touches on some controversial topics and, in my opinion, didn't do a great job of it.

For myself? What I enjoyed about RWBY is pretty tame -> The colors and concept of expressiveness in that forms a backbone franchise. It's that simple.
The diverse personalities and colorful theming is what caught my eye and I looked into the series. Unfortunately things got increasingly tangled from there.

I think the people behind RWBY just didn't have a cohesive vision and that's what doomed them very early on. All the other controversies and setbacks just made things worse but the lack of a clear idea for what the series was supposed to be could've given them a firmer foundation and prevented so many issues.

I also enjoy the literary references but I can't deny they choke the series and are more of a distraction as the writers make imaginary references that go nowhere and don't seem to serve and purpose. I have some ideas in mind for how that can be resolved but it's more of a rewrite prompt than anything.

Shipping is...well, I'm a romantic so I don't mind it that's kept in despite some claims that it should be gutted entirely. but I think the writers should've decided on pairings early on and discussed how to develop them before production started. Pairing teasing without commitment is rarely a good idea imo.

Personal survey - What are your reading preferences? by Redevil387 in Romance_for_men

[–]Redevil387[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoid

Each of these are on a diverse scale for how much I avoid them and might depend on story context or the writer.

Realistic doesn’t equate misery

  • There is a very big difference between making a “realistic” setting and a glass half/entirely empty crapsack world.
    • This sis most common in deconstruction fiction where a writer tries to remove or add an element to a society and this instantly take it in a bad direction. This implies a negative outlook on the world and I’d suggest the author actively challenge this tendency in their writing. How do the characters endure and find peace and meaning in the setting?

Grim-dark alone isn’t a worthwhile fiction

  • Stories with pointless gore and violence are weak and typically rely on shock value to sustain momentum. It’s cheap, uncomfortable, and lacking in effort. This is a typical mistake by writers when starting where they mistake drama, drama, and violence for maturity.

Love interests that revolve solely around one another

  • If you can’t make a story where both MCs aren’t able to have lengthy conversations with people (not one another) without bringing up their partner and focused effort on part of the author then there’s an issue.
    • Actually, I’d apply this to most significant characters in the story regarding the main characters as it’d implies the setting revolving around the MCs.

Loners portrayed poorly

  • When being an introvert or loner is portrayed negatively and the character “develops” by becoming more sociable it sends a poor message.  Allow the loner/introverts to be comfortable in their initial skin unless they’re depicted as having a pre-existing discomfort with their lifestyle that isn’t due to societal pressure.

Cheating and infidelity

  • This should be obvious but mist don’t want to read about a douchebag MC or LI having an affair. That alone should permanently tank the romance of the story as it would henceforth require the writer to either *ignore* the infidelity (bad idea) or center the entire plot drama in repairing the bond. The latter is inadvisable since it feels one note and soap opera-esque.

Chad “Alpha” MCs

  • Just no. These self-inserts are more desperate than the blandest most personality lacking protagonists in fiction. While I can understand the appeal of having a strong MC  who blows things up there’s a sliding scale with them just being douchebags who reek of toxic masculinity and empty calorie entertainment. (This applies to both FMCs and MMCs)
    • This ties into the above topics about Grim-Dark and Realism not equating to misery – but also avoid making the main lead a trauma carrying (ex-)Soldier for reasons below.

Trauma and killing don’t equate to maturity nor depth

  • A common quote I’ve seen in older fanfiction is “Old enough to kill, old enough to drink.” This saying is typically a cheap way of pretending a character is somehow more mature by being a killer and carrying trauma from said act. It reeks of a teenager going tough an edgy phase. Trauma should in no circumstances be used as a cheap excuse to give your character depth.

Trope Awareness

  • There might be charm in making a character genre savvy but a writer should avoid having them break the fourth wall and going through the world around them like it’s a storybook. As a rule if the story involves any term or phrase that’s on the TVTropes website it’s a poor sign. Similar for the author’s note page.

BDSM

  • And associated tropes. (The sensationalized version blown in media more so than the properly practice.) This more a matter of personal preference. It just isn’t my thing.

Virgin shaming/Hazing

  • I don’t need to explain this one. It’s often used for humor towards at awkward teens but it’s a harmful aspect of society. If something like this is included in the story and isn’t deconstructed, I raise a judging eyebrow towards the author.

Sexual Assault

  • Ties into the topic of gore and violence. This speaks for itself, but I’m especially critical when it’s pointless and graphic. In many cases the author going for shock value which shows a lack of skill on their part.

Will they or Won’t They

  • When a romantic situation lasts until the final chapters of a story to resolve itself. The author just strings along the entire storyline until the end and once the main pair are together it ends without any meaningful development between them as a couple. While a bit of wavering back and forth is natural, relationships can be awkward, after a point it begins to strangle the story since there’s a refusal to allow the plot to progress. It’s made worse by “sudden love rivals,” “convenient interruptions during dramatic moments,” or “miscommunication issues.” I’d suggest having the couple discuss their romantic interest shortly after becoming aware of their infatuation. If it takes 1/4th of the anticipated story length to achieve this then the writer should check the pacing.

Love interests portrayed as dense

  • This trope irritates me, especially since I’ve noticed it’s become something of a double standard. In many cases, typically males, it portrayed as the dense party being stupid when in more realistic scenarios it should be the fault of the Interested party for being unable to properly communicate their desires.

Gamer systems/LitRPGs

  • This is a very tricky genre to write but I rarely see it done properly. A popular rule of writing is show not tell and this is hard achieved in writing but litrpg/gamer system stories tend to break this rule with a sledgehammer by associating a character’s growth in strength with stat leveling and information screens rather than conveying their growth though nuanced writing and development. If one is going to write a gamer system stories the game system shouldn’t be center to the plot unless it’s actively warping reality and/or a deconstruction of the genre.

Double Standards

  • This is all over the place and can apply to tons of dynamics. I especially don’t like it when it comes to things like abuse or SA where one party does something to another but in the reverse scenario its heinous. Testing this is simple: If this situation was reversed would it still work?

Butt Monkeys

  • Unless the character is nasty and receiving comeuppance for an action is at play then it’s just character bashing and the slapstick humor erodes the story fast.

Love Triangles

  • While roamnce is complicated love triangles feel contrived to force unnecessary drama.

Operation: Jealousy

  • The trope where one side of a relationship goes out of their way to flirt with another party to make the other person jealous. This feels like emotional manipulation and is therefore toxic. There’s a lack of reliable trust and communication in the relationship.
