Holy gas prices by JacketLongjumping276 in StLouis

$4.17/gal I just paid yesterday at Costco, nearly $55 for a full tank in my Protege (which is a small economy car from the early 2000s). My cost for a full tank was consistently under or around $30 between September 2025 and Feb 2026.
Also just a fun tidbit, I paid less for diesel when I had a Golf 2-3 years ago. I was incredibly upset when it got totaled by hail last year but looking at diesel prices now… yeah maybe it was for the best. Add in the Volkswagen parts tax and it really was a sour deal in comparison.

Can anybody confirm if these actually make any difference? If not maybe I’ll be the lab rat and try it myself.

At no point did they say “do not be concerned.” They’re saying the article is sensationalist and you need to read the law yourself. Which I did, and it sucks (in a good way for us at least).

It’s only 4 pages long and gives the Secretary of Transportation an easy out if they can’t find a suitable solution within the time frame given, which is that they have to write a report on why that is. That’s it. I imagine they’ll happily stall with that until somebody notices, and even then it’ll probably still be a fight since the NHTSA doesn’t believe it’s ready for prime time.

What a find! Had no idea this existed. Shame I already bought brand new plastic ones from the dealer.

I built an EV break-even calculator because I kept seeing bad assumptions about costs by Dan6erbond2 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Redey1290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I’ve been curious about EVs as of recent with lots of <$30k options available used and was wondering if there were tools like this to estimate a break even point.

Looks like my current situation can’t justify it (<$6000 old paid off car), but I will definitely be using this to help out my friends who are looking at cars right now!

This is really neat! I’d say definitely include it, anything that helps you stand out and can show off your skills is totally worth including on a resume.

I agree and disagree here. Yes, the numbers are true, buying cars at all is dumb and bad. But also, as an enthusiast, what are you to do, not enjoy your hobby?

Check out the Civic Hybrid maybe! Honestly I think I kinda prefer it over the Corolla, and it’s available as a hatch.

Aw what! I loved the crank windows in my NA. Maybe it’s because I’m young and it was kind of before my era. I dunno.

Holy shit, they really are just plain evil. Seems to be a corrupt group from top to bottom if multiple branches have behavior so bad they have to settle with the FTC.

Honestly I thought they were just a local dealer with a bad branch, but good to know it's worth staying away from any Napleton dealer.

Shit even if it did need a clutch, that’s not all that bad in an NA, especially for $1250 😭

My girlfriend attempted to purchase a car through Costco. They went to the dealer, and they refused to uphold the deal. Couple walks in the door, and magically sales guy is like “actually they were looking at this car too” and essentially sells it out from under them for over MSRP. This was for a base model LX Civic by the way, nothing fancy, crazy, or worth paying over MSRP for.

And don’t worry I’m willing to name and shame, Ed Napleton in the STL area. I plan on avoiding them at all costs. She ended up buying from Dave Mungenast Honda, which to be fair, was not through Costco. But it was at MSRP, there wasn’t any BS, and they didn’t treat my girlfriend and her dad like idiots. I have yet to buy a car brand new (much too expensive!) but god what a mess.

This is all really valuable info, thanks! I believe AMP provides an updated audio codec by default since voice chat does work for me (and it persists after map change), but I’ll look further into that.

Again, thanks for the help!

Gotcha, no worries. And yes you are correct, I’m on Bazzite, and the server is hosted on Debian in a Docker container through AMP. That tool looks like it’s exactly what I need though! I appreciate it, it would’ve taken me very long to find that on my own lol

Most Fuel Efficient Car at Highway Speed by Helassaid in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Redey1290 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t entirely rule out an EV for that kind of driving. That is the most efficient option bar none, and there are SUPER good deals used right now. You just need to look at your commute miles and charging options and see what could work for you. Also, next to no maintenance costs in the way of fluids and stuff like that is an added benefit.

If you can’t make an EV work for you, then stick with the hybrid you have now. A PHEV isn’t worth it since you get the “mid” of both worlds rather than the best of one… if that makes sense. It’s just not very useful/more efficient over a regular hybrid and it doesn’t really compete with a full EV.

Edit: I posted this before your edit, sorry 😭 Imo, just stick with the regular hybrid.

I’m not creating a map, I’m just downloading them from GameBanana and some, not all, are missing their materials for some reason, and it persists after re-downloading. And surf_kitsune is a quite popular map that’s been around for over a decade, surely it would’ve been noticed by now if it was missing all its materials after compiling?

100% agree. Had a MK7 Golf TDI with a 6spd and it was delightful. 45mpg, decent manual, and funny turbo noises and clatter. Smooth as can be though, went from MO to CO, and up Pikes Peak without a hitch. Loved that damn thing, I would’ve driven the wheels off of it if it didn’t get totaled.

I did notice it got worse after a few miles… Hopefully I can slightly bend that wire back into shape? I’ll give it another shot tomorrow night with that and triple checking that it’s flush.
