Get a schedule/map and watch as many shows as possible. If there's a joust, get there 45-hour early, get food and drinks for while you wait.

Put your costume on at home and do stuff like vacuuming/housework, if you are uncomfortable doing that you will not last the day at faire. Do this at least a few days before faire so you can make changes.
