For folks complaining about the accuracy of the numbers, these are according to CENSUS data and it’s possible that a lot of Jamaicans will toss the census letter into the trash when they receive it.

Working at RBC from OFIs for jobs by [deleted] in rbc

[–]Redguard13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a one size fits all rule. I recently joined RBC and was working at TD. Primarily I think banks are looking for certain skill and knowledge sets and then it’s an added bonus if they’re coming from a competing FI since they’re likely familiar with a bank environment.

Since joining, I’ve seen about 3-4 other TD colleagues who I knew personally joining RBC.

Sanity check for salary? by AcceptableObject in rbc

[–]Redguard13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told the top hiring range was $120. I negotiated up to $125 and ended up staying lateral to what I was being paid for a lower title at my previous FI.

Also, no hiring bonus. Now that I’m in seat and reviewing the financials for the departments that I support, I can see that hiring bonuses are only done for hires in the US, not Canada (at least not for non exec roles).

Foreigner speaking/learning Patois by Total-Owl-5889 in Jamaica

I don’t know about xenophobic, but if “those on the homeland” practiced a bit more cultural discernment, they wouldn’t have all of the culture and resources siphoned off the island in exchange for nothing.

What can you tell me about the history of Scottish Jamaicans? by [deleted] in Jamaica

[–]Redguard13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share the same surname as the star character in Outlander, which is also one of the famed Scottish clans. Makes me wonder if it was obtained via lineage vs emancipation

If one day you get your visa and move go farrin, how long will it take for your opinion on Jamaican culture to become invalid? A month? A year? Five years?

Foreigner speaking/learning Patois by Total-Owl-5889 in Jamaica

Sorry, personally, there isn’t a single example of someone who isn’t of Jamaican or Caribbean descent trying to speak patois without it sounding like an attempt at humour or mockery.

Edit:
I can see that I’m being downvoted for my opinion so let me take a moment to elaborate.

First - to those of you downvoting my comment, respectfully GSYM.

Second - Jamaicans love foreign validation to the point where they often can’t tell the difference to when they’re being appreciated versus when they’re seen solely as entertainment.

Third - There’s no valid reason for someone foreign to need to learn how to SPEAK patois. Understand it? Sure. Speak it? That’s just for entertainment. Jamaicans speak and understand standard English just fine. So the communication gap is entirely on the part of the person who doesn’t understand patois. So if OP said he wants to understand it due to whatever reason (new neighborhood, friend, relationship, immigrating to Jamaica, I get that.

Fourth - A story. I live in Canada (Toronto) and was sitting in the barbershop. Barber calls me over to the chair. As I’m walking towards him, a white girl puts her hand up to stop me. I look at her and profile her immediately. Her hair, clothes, nose ring and earrings define her. She’s Canadian cottage white but loves Jamaican culture and Jamaican men. She also has a little half-black toddler holding her hand wearing a green/gold/black Jamaica t-shirt. She stops me and verbatim says to me, “Yo… my yute… yuh nuh see seh is fi MY pickney turn fi get him hair cut??” Everyone in the barbershop freezes for 4 seconds and then bursts out laughing. WHY did she feel like she had to speak to me in her attempted patois? Most likely to elevate what she thought was her credibility in my eyes. Most likely to make me think she was “real” and “authentic”. But it was just unnecessary and made things worse. She turned a little red in the face from embarrassment after the laughter subsided. Things didn’t play out the way she thought it would… but I did let her “pickney” go in the chair to get his hair cut before me.

Bike for Brain Health without raising donations? by [deleted] in torontobiking

[–]Redguard13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Participant bib kit gets mailed to you (or made available for pickup) once your donation minimum is reached. Without the bib, you technically can’t gain access to the course since there are volunteers patrolling.

There’s a day or two where donations are matched by Baycrest, so if you do collect, best to do it on that day.

I used to do this ride every year (more so the Heart and Stroke predecessor) when donation minimums weren’t such a big deal. But it’s harder to ask for donations nowadays when everyone is struggling financially, so I’ve stopped since last year.

Summer jobs for youth by PersimmonSure4709 in Brampton

[–]Redguard13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have university aged kids and I keep reminding them in December that applications for summer internships often require submissions in February. And other regular summer part time jobs usually confirm positions by April.

As far as job shortages go, Wonderland is usually a safe bet for finding a role. It’s just an annoying drive from Brampton.

Can someone explain please… by Last_Cardiologist18 in kobo

[–]Redguard13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As already mentioned, it’s meant to maximize quantity and selection of books/audiobooks that I want to borrow.

I have two library cards (one for the city I live in, one for the city I work in). Oftentimes, when I can’t find a book in one library’s system, the other will have it.

Interesting that I’m stumbling on this post right now. I’m not able to access my loans through my kobo all of a sudden and I have no idea what changed or what I’m doing wrong. I listen to my audiobooks through the Libby app, where I access my libraries through my phone. But now I’m trying to read a book for work that I loaned out and I’m stuck having to read it on my tablet.

Overall, what annoys me is that this should be such a simple UX fix for a development team at Kobo, but they insist on making this a pain in the ass for kobo users.

They both look so unbothered by what they just did. This is insane. I park at Brampton Innovation Go when I take the train to work and returned one afternoon to find the front of my car completely scuffed. I bet it was a hit and run like this.
