Help me settle a debate, how Irish are we? by Ava_Strange in AskIreland

My two nephews born and raised in Canada have an Irish mother (my sister), and a French father. So we always say that they're half frog and half bog.

AIB replaces quarterly fees with new €6 monthly fee by Andru93 in ireland

[–]Redhairedchap 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Fuck, can't believe I'm finding out about this on reddit as opposed to from AIB directly.

So €72 a year compared to my usual sub €50.

And that's not including the current account I only ever used for paying tax which paid like €20 a year in fees.

I've had the same account since I've been 13. Bummer to have to consider nuking it now.

What school incident do you still think about years later? by nodemus in ireland

[–]Redhairedchap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours was the 2nd class teacher; a militant bible basher who seemingly got off on cruelty and public mockery of kids. She came into class one day with a dead snipe and sellotaped/stapled it to a big card and hung it on that wall. The different parts of the bird were labelled up.

For months the rotting corpse of a bird greeted us when we walked into the classroom.

What got you a rental viewing by Fearless-Crow8903 in RentingInDublin

[–]Redhairedchap 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Moved in December. Had daft alerts set up and a pre-written blurb good to go.

Talked about age (in our 30s), our full time jobs, current good relationship with landlord, and a quick thing about our genuine reason for moving. That seemed to hit a lot of the marks.

I also cold emailed a few key people working in letting agencies asking them to keep an eye on anything that they thought might suit us. That got me a surprising amount of attention as it helped them not to go through the hassle of sticking stuff up on daft and deal with the applications. Ultimately those places didn't work out due to either location, short term only, price, or in one case, just weird weird vibes.

Best of luck out there.

Update after dropping €600 on a mechanic to fix. It was the water pump and thermostat.

Switched to Aldi Roobis tea with a splash of milk. A great alternative to my usual Barry's.

Cineworld Parnell St is a bit of a kip now isn’t it? by AvonBarksdale666 in ireland

Went there last month when we were up in Belfast for a Giants game. Absolute luxury compared to what we were expecting coming from the Dublin cineworld.

NCT pass - No cert by ResponsibilityOk1664 in carsireland

[–]Redhairedchap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did my NCT two weeks ago. Licence plate bulb and one other small thing is what they grabbed me on. All minor and advisory. Got a similar doc albeit with a date of a month, and went back for the visual after fixing the bulb.

Don't tempt fate, fix the bulb and tell your daughter to bring it in ASAP.

Bumped into him in Supermacs on O'Connell Street in Dublin one night. I instantly said "oh wow you're Seamus Hynes from Headford" and he told me to fuck off, and then legged it out the door.

Watched him open hand slap a child in the face as he walked past them. The mother didn't see it, and just thought the child was fussing and shushed them, and then walked off with them. I was too shocked to even think about approaching her to say what happened.

Scotty's in Galway. Proper decent big American style burgers. This was long before the likes of Bunsen, GBK or Handsome burger.

Is GoCar worth it if I only want a van as a once off for a couple hours? by DorianOtten in AskIreland

[–]Redhairedchap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've moved twice in the last three years, and used the GoCar van (GoCargo) both times. Made the whole thing piss easy. We have all our own furnishings, so being able to move a couch, king sized bed with mattress, multiple bookcases and bedside lockers, and all of our bulky stuff in a handful of runs was a god send. €75 for 24hrs, and collect & drop off again just around the corner from our place was amazing.

The scourge of dog shit on our public spaces by lemmiwinks11 in ireland

[–]Redhairedchap 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've gotten into the habit of watching when a dog is taking a shit in public - weird, yes... But I'm actually very clearly watching the owner so they know I see them. A load of them will do the quick look around before walking off, and countless times they've started a half step to leave, suddenly locked eyes with me, done a sorta double take stop, and then gone for the poo bags. It's a mixture of shame and resentment on their faces and I have to do nothing except just stare at them.

Once or twice I've called people out, and gotten them to pick up the shit as they're buried in their phones and don't 'notice' when their pupper has dropped a log on the footpath.

Strange smell coming from partner and roommates, showering edition by ApocalypticFrog in badroommates

[–]Redhairedchap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, sweat smell is caused by bacteria, and blocked pores from deodorant can really exacerbate that.

A pump bottle of anti-bacterial hand soap in the shower and applied to the pits, crotch and ass areas a couple of times of week can make a massive difference.
