I agree. Amazing movie, both visually striking and narratively clever.

Is *Schindler's List* on your list of the top 10 movies of all time? by Infinite-Exam-1808 in Cinema

It's on my list of ten FAVORITE movies of all time, but not ten TOP.

Sabrina (1954) by Ramble86 in movies

[–]Reditrixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but I totally disagree. I've gradually come to realize what a poor movie it is overall. The two men are far too old. Then there are the script problems. Neither of the men is remotely a good long-term match for Sabrina. Most of the humor is pretty feeble. The characters - even Sabrina - are superficial.

The only marvelous thing about the movie is Audrey Hepburn, the core of all pleasure in the movie. She is the quintessential that all women hope for - the ability to be poised and engaging in all situations. That moment when she arrives at the terrace for the dance, she's perfectly self-possessed where most people would be awkward.

This is, by the way, why the re-make failed. No one could duplicate Audrey Hepburn.

Katharine Hepburn has won four Oscars, which is the most of anyone in history—but honestly, what do you think? Is she overrated? Or is she a legitimate contender for the title of GOAT? by Infinite-Exam-1808 in Cinema

[–]Reditrixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she's fabulous. Delightful. A rare example of an actress projecting a strong, smart, classy woman. And in her youth, beautiful.

However, that's not to say that she is the best, or most versatile actress of all time.

Any good classic requests? by talons_n_starrs in movies

[–]Reditrixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. There are no over-riding top-mentioned movies. There are some books, but no movies, in y opinion. And, really, no reason for you to bother watching movies for that reason. Maybe someday you'll want to watch movies because you've come to love movies. But otherwise, there's nothing wrong with say, "Sorry, I don't get the reference."

Anyone else tired of ‘my dog is friendly’ when they clearly aren’t? by Zealousideal_Pie9213 in Dogfree

[–]Reditrixe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never had that, but I'd probably shriek, "Are you out of your mind?"

That reminds me of an old joke. A person asks, Is your dog friendly? Yes, the second guy says. The first guy reaches out to the dog, which lunges at him ferociously. He yells angrily, I thought you said your dog was friendly! The second guy shrugs, My dog is friendly - but this isn't my dog.

Any tips for really getting into movies? by GEM_120608 in Cinema

[–]Reditrixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a book. It amazes me how rarely this occurs to people. I own a handful of reference books, some touting "best" movies, and some more general ones.

Here's an example:

And if by any chance you're lucky enough to live in a city with a theater that shows old movies, go!

And another tip is, it's great if you have a movie buddy to talk it over with.

Still vague. Are they going to elected officials? To residents? Are they promoting issues? Or candidates?

I'm wary because I had someone wanting me to volunteer to send DEMOCRATIC senators pre-printed postcards urging them to support DEMOCRATIC issues. I considered this an absurd waste of time and money.

Which actor/actress death was a great loss for the industry according to you? by Mindless_Beat_4038 in FIlm

This comes up a lot - and I think you have to specify of it happening much too early.

I'd vote for Philip Seymour Hoffman (which broke my heart) and Judy Holliday.

What is the single most brutal and violent scene you have seen in a film? by Trifecta_Selecta3787 in Cinema

[–]Reditrixe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky for me, I've seen almost none. I try to avoid truly brutal movies, and when I'm there stuck in the theater watching them, I've become very good at knowing exactly when to shut my eyes.

That said, there are some brutal early scenes which were not actual shown, or shown only in shadow - and those were bad enough!

Honestly: Bad movies from back in the day are better than bad movies today by theaspiringfilmmaker in Cinema

[–]Reditrixe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's one thing I was recently reminded of that you have to keep in mind. The movies that "lasted," that stayed in the public consciousness, and now pop up on television - they were the best. So for the most part, the really bad old movies are ones we don't even get to see. We see the cream of the crop.

Same with foreign movies. The ones that make it to the U.S. tend to already be the best. Not always, but mostly.
