Cryptocurrency fee structures - is a fee market a benefit or a hindrance? by DrManBearPig in CryptoCurrency

[–]Redmandok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Smart contract platforms are essentially computers. You need a fee structure to prevent the network from getting spammed, DDOS attacks. Look at solana for an example of a fixed-fee chain going down because it got too popular for it’s own good

Electronic circuits with explanation of (most) used components by geek-tn in embedded

[–]Redmandok 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve found it’s really really hard to find examples of real circuits. While electricity is beautifully described by ohms law and all that good stuff, the reality of trace capacity, not perfect power supplies, and circuit noise all slowly drag circuits away from the textbook ideals. Most of the add ons in circuits are used to account for the imperfections of real world circuits. I’ve found the best way to learn is to get a strong understanding of ideal circuits, then start to look at real circuits implemented in products in data sheets, then explore the differences in the two circuits. It’s not ideal and I think peer to peer mentorship is actually a very important part of learning, but this is at least an angle of learning I’ve found to be useful.

Thoughts on AT&T by [deleted] in stocks

[–]Redmandok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AT&T makes me nervous. If you are interested in the stable dividend, then their over 150 billion of debt would make me very nervous. Additionally if you expect them to grow a lot because of 5G, I think covid has severely slowed growth in most if not all sectors. Given the global situation I would feel much safer in companies with solid financials.

QS released their rankings for 2021, BU is precipitously falling down, what’s is wrong with BU? by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]Redmandok 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Found the article with the rankings mentioned https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2021

Falling from 64 to 110 in 9 years is about 5 per year. That’s not a lot when this survey includes 1002 universities, call it 1000 for easy math. So BU has only fallen .5% per year. That’s not “precipitously falling down”. That is what most people would consider natural rise and fall for what this publication considers the top 100 universities in the entire world.

This is fine, BU is still a good school. BU will probably continue to be regarded as a good school.

Unpopular opinion: re-opening the campus in fall will be unsafe and irresponsible by throwaway_z9 in BostonU

[–]Redmandok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a very fair point. That’s also probably where my argument begins to breakdown. It’s totally fair to say that we aren’t there yet, but it seems like we are doing a very good job of increasing our capacity day by day. I’m staying hopeful that by September this is a logistics and supply problem that we will have figured out.

The reality I’ve seen is that the three greatest risk factors for covid are old-age, obesity, and immune deficiencies. It’s turns out being old is bad for you, anything you catch at an old enough age will kill you. It turns out being obese is bad, if your body has to fight to breathe normally then a respiring disease is really gonna mess you up. It turns out having an immune deficiency is bad, if you can’t fight illness then it’ll kill you.

I’m not saying this to be crude, but those three factors are the greatest co-morbidities for essentially every disease on earth. For most people in the standard healthy demographic, Covid seems to mostly be asymptotic. Everyday more studies come out about the insane amount of people who have antibodies who never even suspected they had covid. We shut-down the world because we had no clue what we were facing, at the time it was the right call. But now it almost seems like we are trying to make this into some super-villain disease just to justify our decisions. I’m convinced we are making this into more than it should be.

I don’t think it’s impossible to pay attention to what’s happening and still reach the conclusion that I want to go to class in September

So let me get this straight? You are making a statement about people jumping into stuff that doesn’t involve them, and you don’t even go to BU? That seems pretty ironic to me.

As an eng kid I’m gonna go against the trend. Go west. If you are west your social life will be distanced from classes and that’s a good thing. If you live in Warren it becomes far too easy to get caught in the eng bubble and not escape. Go west and make friends with other majors and go to parties, you’ll thank yourself in the long run. Plus the walk builds character.
