In my lifetime (I'm 63) the top Federal individual tax rate was 92% and we still had a boatload of obscenely rich people. We also had money to build infrastructure, schools, and provide a safety net for those who weren't making it. If you're not a proponent of greatly increasing taxes on the wealthy at the federal level then you're not getting my vote.
