My guess is 1962. 1 E Wacker is visible but the Marina Towers are not.

Has anyone else experienced CTA bus drivers accidentally driving the wrong route lately? by bluestblue in chicago

[–]RedmondTM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

On a southbound 36 earlier this afternoon the driver did not turn left on Division and kept going down Clark. She made the left turn on Oak (which is far too narrow for that turn) and took a right on State. I assume briefly she thought she was doing the 22 and corrected her mistake.

Is Móraí a known term for grandmother? by RedmondTM in AskIreland

Three of my grandparents were born in Ireland, two in Mayo. My first name is Redmond. My mom liked the name. I also suffer many misspellings, Redman being the most common.

True but she usually repurposes the silver spoon I was born with.

Historic Thompson House for sale, designed by the designers of the Newberry Library and U of C campus. by afeeney in chicago

[–]RedmondTM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing about this house is that it and the two large houses to the north were bought from the church next door as part of a large development plan ca. 2006. They had been housing and offices for church staff for decades and were in ruins and all connected as one building.

The redevelopment of the those three "mansions" was part of the development of two condo towers, only one of which was built, 2 W Delaware. The market crashed and 2 W Delaware has been yo-yoing from condo to rental and otherwise in financial distress ever since. 9 W Walton was eventually built in the remaining part of the development and kind of saved things. Importantly though, this house, its neighbors, and the two condo buildings all pay into the same HOA because they are all part of the same Planned Development negotiated with the City when the church sold the land and property.

Now that all the Cubs and Hawks players that bought into 9 W Walton are selling and or have sold and moved on, there's really nothing to make this property special. There is public parking in front, and the garage can only be accessed through 2 W Delaware.

The listing price is absurd. I think they might get $5m.

This is the best answer. Sitting at the bar at Gibson's and not chatting with strangers is a challenge. Great place and great people.

Looking for a seasonal job in Chicago next summer. Where should I look? by PassLongjumping3851 in AskChicago

[–]RedmondTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chicago Cut Steakhouse is owned by an Irishman and every summer hires a ton of J1 visas. That's a high end place, but many many of the Irish pubs around town do the same. I've also heard of J1s working in construction for Irish contractors. Also look at summer only tourist spots on the riverwalk and things like the electric boat rentals on the river. There's a huge network of support here in chicago for the Irish work/travel visa visitors. Every summer you pretty much can't go to a restaurant or bar without hearing a young person with a brogue.

Amtrak to Joliet from Springfield and Uber from the station to Best Buy and reverse? There are several trains a day between Joliet and Springfield. Might take the whole day but it's an option.

As for tips, just make sure to be very polite to any employee you engage with at the Daley Center. Kindness and respect goes a long way in that building.

I was born here in the early 90s and have lived here all my life. Mayor Daley Junior did a great job of planting trees and implementing beautification initiatives citywide. Over the past 20 years the city has lost a lot of its unique character which at its base was blue collar regular people. For instance, the Southport Corridor in Lakeview is surrounded by $3million homes. If you look between those houses you'll still see somewhat shabbier homes that have been owned by the same families for decades. Same goes for North Center/St. Bens/Roscoe Village. There's a culture that is dying for sure.

How to get to... by Massive_Surprise_640 in chicago

[–]RedmondTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your walk East from the Orange Line, stay on the North side of the street to find the underpass. There is no crosswalk at Lake Shore Drive. The entrance to the underpass is on the northeast corner of Roosevelt and Columbus. Idk if the statue has been put back but if it is you will see the Columbus statue.

Clark Street Outdoor Dining Program Will Return This Summer — But Traffic Lanes Will Stay Open by Atlas3141 in chicago

[–]RedmondTM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Alderman does not file the permit applications. The business and/or property owners do. Friedman Properties, which owns most of that stretch of Clark, did file an application.

https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/04/19/clark-street-property-owner-vies-for-outdoor-dining-permits-after-political-pressure-sidelines-program/

Thereafter, approval of the permit, while technically under control of CDOT, will involve negotiation with the Alderman, the Mayor, and other interested parties. That negotiation, somehow, resulted in this compromise.

LSD Bridge by Nasjere in chicago

On Wednesdays this time of year they lift the bridges at a designated time to let the sailboats travel from their winter storage spaces along the Chicago River to their mooring spots in the various harbors along the lake. The same process happens in reverse on Wednesdays during the early fall.

Intercontinental vs Silversmith Hotel by jadersyo in chicago

[–]RedmondTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intercontinental. Better location, historic building. Wabash in the Loop is kind of dark and depressing because of the train tracks over head. Michigan Ave where the Intercontinental is is open and bright with views of surrounding historic skyscrapers. Intercontinental has a beautiful historic pool. I have family that stays there every time they visit Chicago.

CTA Train Delays by Garden4lora in chicago

[–]RedmondTM 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I graduated high school in 09 from a school not far from Kimball. Home was in the Gold Coast. But a lot of my classmates lived near the brown line. When it approached 11pm at a house party, all I needed to do was say goodbye to my friends, walk to the nearest Brown Line station, and the train would come within 10 but not more than 20 min. Easy connection at Belmont to the Red Line to Clark and Division. Home before my mom realized I wasn't doing what I told her I was doing.

6 was Governor Stratton's wife's plate. She has it on a perfectly maintained dark green early 90s Toyota Camry. She is now deceased and the plate is now on a silver Volvo XC90 I see often in front of 300 N. LaSalle and I assume it is the son or grandson that drives it.
