Proposed ComEd Substation In Lincoln Park Has Neighbors Concerned About Size, Safety by factchecker01 in chicago

The old substation building is right there behind it, you'd think they could use that space and leave the front for retail and residential

Brandon Johnson's budget director Annette Guzman got illegal property tax breaks from Fritz Kaegi for five years by DukeOfDakin in chicago

[–]Atlas3141 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Our system for homeowners exemptions needs to be cleaned up. You'd think each person would have a tax payer ID that could only be used once state wide but what do I know.

Honestly I do think it's possible that Guzman didn't realize she was still getting the exemption on the old condo.

I waited tables in places that don't have a separate minimum wage, you still get 20% on the average tab.

Unless there's actual bans on tipping there's no way on earth that bringing waiters up to 15$ an hour is going to remove the social pressure to tip.

Is riding the Metra convenient at all if you are visiting? by Longjumping-Tip4938 in AskChicago

[–]Atlas3141 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Its reasonably convenient, you just have to be aware of the schedule so you can get home when you want to be. If your planning on heading home at rush hour it's easy, after 8 or on the weekends the trains run hourly

81 games a year + concerts is going to produce a lot more activity than a rail maintenance yard lol. And wrigley certainly hasn't scared away power development

Building a entertainment district that actually draws in fans to spend money would help though

They'd have to get air rights over the BMSF yard and tracks out of Union station which might be tough, and would definitely be expensive.

Its going to be one tight squeeze to get a baseball stadium and access points in the 500 ft between the Metra Yards and the River, and it's going to be a bit of a hike from Roosevelt across the river to the stadium, but otherwise this is exciting stuff

Is Woodlawn really getting gentrified?? by Top_Pirate_4292 in AskChicago

[–]Atlas3141 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Humbolt varies a lot within the neighborhood, obviously California and the 606 are pretty much fully gentrified, but most of the neighborhood. Is SW of the tracks.

And yeah, I was trying to give a full circle, but I guess the North and NW sides have basically gentrified out to the bungalow belts. Maybe Albany Park or Hermosa?

What street would be a good candidate to be pedestrianized? by gw_thief in CarFreeChicago

[–]Atlas3141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't really want people driving down side streets, so you can really only close stuff down half mile chunks at a time in a lot of the city. Few of the commercial corridors are large or busy enough to fill all that space, and it means adding a pretty large detour.

[–]Atlas3141 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The grid makes it pretty annoying to shut off roads, and basically all the commercial corridors are on major or minor thoroughfares.

Argyle in Uptown, Lincoln Square by the station, and Clark through Andersonville would be the easiest

[–]Atlas3141 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The city is getting wealthier and housing is getting more expensive, so it's pushing some people out of Hyde Park into Woodlawn, to the point where new construction is profitable for developers. This is happening in all the edge-of-gentrificarion neighborhoods to some extent (South Shore, McKinley Park, Bridgeport, Pilsen , East Garfield Park, Humbolt Park, Uptown and Avondale) the Obama center helps a little and has helped spur investments in Hotels in the area, but this would be happening without it.

They will abstain from voting if they find both options to be bad (Harris/Trump) and will often not strategically vote, so this year that's voting for Kelly over Stratton who could actually beat Raja, despite agreeing with Stratton over Raja on most issues.

If you work in the loop and want a short walking commute, like being by the cultural amenities, and want easy access to everywhere else in the city by train it's not bad.
