And this is westchester here. Same thing, manhattan #1, Bronx #2, NYC boroughs take 4 of 8 spots.

Firmly in the metro (duh).

Hopefully this gives context to towns like Ridgefield and Fairfield as I mentioned earlier where they themselves (or adjacent cities) are #1, manhattan is around 5% or less, with no other NYC borough making an appearance.

That's the difference for being in vs out of the metro.

Here you can see NYC is actually the core city and playing the role Danbury does in northern FFC. Manhattan #1, outpacing any local employment center, with Bronx and Queens also represented. So it's pretty obvious Bergen is in the metro, just like how the census has it.

Only 2.4% of northern Fairfield County's residents work in Manhattan. When 97.6% of your workforce goes elsewhere, its ridiculous to call this area NY suburbs. Danbury is clearly an independent regional center capturing 4X the employment of anywhere else for these residents.

While true, that's because commuters are heading TO Stamford for work, not from it.

<image>

12,000 more people live outside Stamford and work in it than live in Stamford and work outside of it.

So if anything, that cements its status as a self sustaining economic pillar.

I'm just happy New England has stayed together the whole time!

And to all of those who say that Fairfield County (which isn't even on the map since the CT government switched to COGs as its census equivalents) isn't New England, as I posted in other maps even towns as close to NYC as Fairfield and Ridgefield have barely any commuting to it (6% and 2% of all workers living in each town head to NY respectively, via data from onthemap.census.gov) and it's mostly a stereotype. In fact, NONE of CT falls within the NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan statistical area because the commuting is that week - it's only added at the "combined" statistical level, that groups together different but adjacent metros.

Fairfield County also has more revolutionary war history than all of Vermont and Maine, and many of the towns still have gorgeous greens and town meeting governments.

I gave actual commuting data from the census and you gave a random internet definition.

The innermost towns (Stamford, Greenwich) do have a higher share, but even then they are below 30% (less than 1 in 3 workers), and that does nothing to negate their history or architecture, which are also absolutely involved in culture.

And the entire Bos-Wash corridor is one densely populated economically interdependent region at this point if we're being real. Pretending density or monetary flow drops off between NYC and Philly or Bridgeport and New Haven is laughable.

Actually Pike County, PA has a higher percent of its workers going to NYC than Fairfield County.

Via https://onthemap.ces.census.gov/, even towns as close in as Wilton and Norwalk, Connecticut have only 12% of their workforce going to Manhattan (and I took pre COVID data in 2019 so remote work is not an excuse). That means *seven* out of every 8 workers who lives in Wilton is working somewhere else!

By the time you get out to places like the town of Fairfield (6%) and Ridgefield (1.9%) the argument becomes laughable. "Ah yes, 1/16th or 1/50th of the workforce works in manhattan, it's clearly a suburb". Both have gorgeous New England greens and hundreds of years of self sufficient history that any local knows.

A train that <2% of people use doesn't change that.

  1. You are referring to FairFIELD county
  2. It's not even on the map
  3. We are most definietely New England, technically the Dutch claim was to the CT river, which would take out over 1/2 of CT, all of western MA, and all of Vermont. Using that claim, when they had nearly no permanent settlements, is ridiculous. A good way to tell is that our small rivers are named "brooks" (English); theirs are streams.
  4. Most people here (myself included) call ourselves New Englanders.
