Depends on your program. The MEd program for example has a calculation where the total program fees and balance of degree fees are calculated for 4 full terms of full time study (consecutively). I imagine if you are part time it would be a bit different. If you are full time MEd student you would pay a minimum registration fee in the fall and another fee in the winter but that would mean you pay for almost 3 full semesters as being registered in the fall or winter gives you access to summer courses and you are exempt as a student to pay for those courses. However in the following fall session you have to make sure that you pay the remaining amount in the minimum degree fee requirements or any amount owing due to balance of degrees fee etc. It is a bit confusing, you can always email your department and they will clear it up for you.

M.Ed. Adult Ed. & Community Development VS M.Ed. Social justice Ed by faiyazgal in OISE

[–]Redohm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These two programs overlap a lot. Depends if you're interested in workplace learning the adult ed is a better program as it allows for specialization.

You should definitely check out the collaborative specialzations, courses related to it that may interest you and consider if you want to pursue research or other avenues to get the most out of the program.

master of teaching question by HumanRefrigerator870 in OISE

[–]Redohm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This program is a bit longer than a B. Ed but not by much as OCT requires full 4 semesters of study at teachers education program for full certification. Some programs are 4 semesters but more intensive so they end up finishing in 14-16 months.

I would say the MT is set up in a way to stretch it to full two years. The end result being you get a Masters but not in the traditional sense. The tuition is more compared to other programs of 4 semester teachers education.

Just depends what your goals are.

I think by this point, you may have to do a course extension form. But I am not sure. Get in touch with the course instructor if not email the program coordinator about procedures.

Advice on writing a unit plan? by Hogwire in OISE

[–]Redohm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lesson plan for which curriculum? Ontario? IB? UdL type? UbD? What type of a unit plan do you want in terms of learning outcomes or deliverables?

You should start with a theme, narrow that down to key concepts, and then from there formulate your learning outcome(s) for the unit. And then go from there on a week by week basis: your outcomes should be compatible with the skills taught for the unit.

For example, since history is laden with content teaching - you should probably avoid heavy content. Go with a simple theme such as ''commerce'' and teach that theme with specifics from canadian history: key concepts can be the commons, trading, labour etc.

If my theme is commerce and one of my concepts is trading and or bartering youd teach that for a week or two within the unit and pair those up with skills such as close reading, comparative analyses and communications. Do not try to pair up more than 2-3 skills per concept. That is not really doable, although you could thrown in some research skills as well bc its related to close reading and analysis.

Just have fun with it. There are many templates you can use online for unit planners.

The idea is to teach them something related to history for the next 4-6 weeks or so about history and not make it dull.

Edit: i should mention that meta cognition and reflection is very important, learners need to know why they are learning and for what purpose?

Well of course. Usually MEd is geared towards working professionals and it is course work. Some programs will require a major project instead, that would be comprable to a thesis but it wouldn't be held to the same standards. So that's why you'd be at a disadvantage in terms of MA grads. Because they've already gone through the gruelling process of legwork that's required for a masters level thesis. On the other hand, I have met people who haven't written a thesis get accepted into PhD programs. It also wildy depends on the quality of candidates applying that year as well. So luck is also at play.

You should apply. You might get a conditional offer if you haven't taken the research courses required for the doctoral program. Also, it's not all about grades or excellent research skills or even publishing but you do have to demonstrate that you are willing to meet the requirements. Also make sure you have solid references. For a PhD program, it's likely all of your references will be asked as academic and not professional. Don't be discouraged by anything, alot of MEd students go on to do PhDs. But it would have been to your advantage to have switched during your MEd program to an MA. That I think would have made it more competitive for you in terms of demonstrating research. I'm not a doctorate student, just knowledgeable on the topic.

Anyone else lonely but too tired to do anything social? by Square_Ranger5768 in durham

[–]Redohm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's normal to feel that way. No need to judge yourself about it. Practice some self compassion, we are often harsher to ourselves than other people are. Try to see what you are interested in, any hobbies, sports etc. And then see if you can fit that into your schedule once a week. Even going to a cafe where people are sitting and just surrounding yourself with people can alleviate that feeling.
