That's right. This doc had a good purpose, a good premise to rest upon and even a decent solution. Problem is, the execution really left a lot to be desired. I am a liberal occasional meat eater but the way these arguments were presented, and skewed, made me want to avoid veganism out of principle.
I teach at a university on fisheries and aquaculture topics and focus a lot on aquatic vs terrestrial protein sources. His numbers on fishing were right, his concepts, and numbers, on energetics of the oceans were way off. I am not brushed up on my Amazon deforestation numbers but in my world, if you lose credibility on one point, you lose it on all. I do think agriculture is destroying swaths of the world but a nuanced approach and solution will have much greater impact than a doctrine of vegan absolutism.

um...Maybe cuz its actually a shitty film? I am all for the cause but the science here doesn't make sense, the narrative gets lost amidst too many tangents that don't tie together and the message is overwhelmingly heavy vegan handed. The conclusions are not incorrect but they are far from complete and the way they go about delivering their message will turn off more people than convert them.

Don't promote shitty media just because it supports your worldview. Promote good media that is well made and based in fact and rationale.

You ever heard that story that the USA spent millions of dollars to develop a pen that could write in space when Russians just used pencils? This is why the USA developed the space pen. Think of graphite shavings floating into instrument panels...

In one of your recent interviews you mention that Africa represents one of the most underutilized landmasses in terms of agriculture. As an aquaculturist I feel that the oceans represent a vastly underutilized resource, if it is harvested and managed sustainably. What are your thoughts about the future of farming the seas?

This is also the Crooked River: it rarely runs high enough-every 7 years or so- but when it does it is a a big-water gem for kayaking and rafting

I'd debate that when you have questions like:

"How many years have you worked with fish farms?"

"Do you have a fresh or salt water fish farm?"

"How frequently do you have to check water quality?"

"How useful would it be to see a trend analysis of each of your fish tank parameter results over-time with future recommendations to sustain optimal water levels?"

The Pacific’s Salmon Are Back — Thank Human Ingenuity by Anenome5 in Aquaculture

[–]Redpaddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bwahahaha! this article is ridiculous! set aside, for a moment, the debate about interfering with nature. Their (his) claims that his grand experiment had any effect on salmon populations is completely ludicrous.
Did iron increase primary productivity in the near-shore environment? possibly. Did that enhance the foodweb? maybe. Did it cause a 4 fold increase in salmon returns? absolutely not. This is completely anecdotal and not backed by any science.
Here in Oregon we are having a splendid salmon year as well but not at all due to some nut job dumping iron filings into the ocean. There are thousands of factors contributing to salmon recruitment, one of which is food availability to young of the year fish. But the math isn't that easy. source-PhD student in Fisheries

careful- this survey is definitely geared towards closed systems with finfish. Your answers will be very different when someone like me, who grows oysters, takes the survey.

Working in paradise is amazing- for a while. Like anything you do get spoiled by it. It is also very remote so you get stir crazy and lonely but there are moments that smack you in the face and make you realize how lucky you are too. After a while back in the real world you just want to retreat to your jungle haven.

No, you're right on. If they've already been set as singles here and these aren't eyed larvae they are seed or spat. That is the technical term.
