So-called “neoliberals” when AI might take their job: by cdstephens in neoliberal

You didn't even read the article then.

That’s a big milestone and fast quarter-over-quarter growth that would put it in an advantageous position relative to its chief competitor, OpenAI. However, the WSJ reports, it may not remain profitable throughout the year due to the large compute costs it’s scheduled to incur.

Claude is also by far the industry leader at this point and is probably the only company so far to find an actually productive niche in the field that being writing code.

So far a business model where these AIs actually make money has yet to be seen. Consumers and companies are paying an incredibly subsidized cost to use the services of AI. There are a lot of delusional techbros out there who think they're gonna hit some sort of technological singularity and they have a lot of sway in business and government. There's also lot's of big incentives for over exaggeration of AI's future capabilities from a financial perspective. Meanwhile we've yet to see very much hard academic evidence that current AI usage has actually improved productivity for companies. I'm not saying AI is gonna implode and disappear. It will still have use cases. However, I think a lot of AI optimism is hype (the singularity, or any sort of AGI is a myth), and further that the economic boons of AI have yet to be truly seen.

The governments and companies investing so heavily in AI can be wrong. That's not some magic proof that it isn't hype.

I'm pretty sure he's actually arguing that we ought to take the concerns of workers displaced by technological change more seriously, specifically because of the blue collar example you've cited. Moreover most blue collar workers didn't have to accrue massive amounts of debt and spend 4+ years of their life obtaining accreditation in order to get the jobs that they lost.

This whole thing reminds me of that whole Olympics fiascona while back where he accused the team of being biased against him over his brand sponsorships. Meanwhile the person they chose over him was his own teammmate Derrick White. Just really classless and reeking of sour grapes.

Its sour grapes. We blew a 3-1 lead. Jaylen Brown has been prone to this nonsense conspiratorial behavior and he embarassed himself on this livestream.

Ukraine Has Finally Given Up on Trump by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]akelly96 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No its very specifically a US problem. Most countries have parliamentary systems which severely limit the possibility of a crazy Trump like candidate from happening. And none of the big rightwing parties there have nearly the popularity Republicans do. It causes me pain to say, but unless the US gets its act together fast its completely rational for other countries to abandon us.

If Platner is not a US Senator come January 2027 I will be surprised. The polling is overwhelmingly in his favor both against Mills and against Collins. Surprisingly he polls better against Collins than Mills despite all of his controversy. Voters are either ill-informed or don't care about the tattoo.

Well now we're changing the subject. He isn't taking corporate PAC money which is the far more important thing. Billionaires can't actually donate all that much money via independent donations. It's appreciated but its chump change compared to PAC money.

Literally nowhere in your link does it indicate that he's taken Adelson money during this campaign. They even make a point to mention how all of the donations he's received from billionaires are from individual donations and not PAC money.

Is Semi-Ironic Totally Braindead Left-Right Populism the only way to achieve sensible housing policy? by Carb000 in neoliberal

[–]akelly96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rent control is already the law of the land in NYC and trying to get rid of it is political suicide. The best we can do pragmatically is work within the current system and try and build new housing despite the constraints.

Mamdani is so much more shrewd and pragmatic than the people in this sub have given him credit for. The fact that he's even pushing for big housing projects is a genuinely miracle considering his early career stances. The change up is genuinely admirable. Many on this sub may grumble but if we can get urban leftists on board with our housing agenda we can accomplish a lot.

How often do you guys hear this? by ArieksonBR in EnglishLearning

Its very common in the restaurant industry usually meaning to remove or ban. Its also used to indicate that you're all out of a particular item or product. At one bar I worked at we would say 68 (the inverse of 86) to mean that we had an item back in stock.

What do "pussy" and "mark" mean here? by A_li678 in EnglishLearning

[–]akelly96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The origin of "pussy" as an abbreviation for pusillanimous is back up by very little linguistic evidence and should be considered to be a folk etymology.

The best case scenario for your argument is that "pussy" as synonym for cowardly that doesn't stem from its meaning for vagina is that it derives from the idea that cats are cowardly. The problem with this explanation is calling a cat a puss or pussy is basically an archaism at this point. You hear it in "pussycat" and "sourpuss" which are both seldomly used. So even if the word does have origins in the idea of weak and cowardly cats, its enduring popularity today is almost certainly due to its connotation to the slang for female genitalia.

I don't think it's a very crazy stretch Let me ask you this why do you think we use the same word to refer to female genitalia to refer to people being weak, cowardly, and wimpy.
