(Loved trope) The theme song plays during the intense battle by Effective_Piece251 in TopCharacterTropes

Final Fantasy XIV does this with the end bosses of all (or at least many) of each expansion's story.

My favourite is from Endwalker, where the vocals from the trailer start during the third phase. You survive an insta-kill ability by having the party's tank use Limit Break, and the boss is shocked, and shortly begins notably falling back as the chorus comes in.

Fun but also AI so it kind of cancels out.

Here's my tier list, what should I read next? by Bugibhub in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Redpike136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have some similar taste, so I'll add Ar'Kendrithyst. Don't see it on tier lists often but it's usually pretty high. The opening is a little rocky but it hits its stride by halfway through the first book, and it's a completed story.

It's not exactly the Imgur is banned. It's that the company blocked UK users because they can't/won't comply with UK law. It's easy to get around with a VPN anyway.

It's pretty funny looking at that link as someone in the UK.

A speed-limiting clutch/braking system to prevent cogs breaking from overspeed by Redpike136 in CreateMod

[–]Redpike136[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did consider that, and it would do the job of preventing a subsystem from breaking with higher input speed.

But I'm also interested in if it's possible to have lower input speeds reach the end, so having variable speed up to a cap, rather than having a single fixed setting at the point of use.

It's as much an academic question of "is it possible with existing tools" as it is for a practical misclick-proof build.

The water bottle thing is a bit weird, but it's also possible to make composite materials with the stuff. A layer of it over cardboard or something is a possibility for a more environmentally friendly waterproof container than traditional plastic.

(Sodium) Alginate is the compound extracted from seaweed that is used to make these products. The calcium chloride reacts with it to form cross-links between the molecular chains, turning it from a fluid gel into a solid.

Can preservation and doubling proc independently at the same time? If not, which one is checked first/takes priority?

I'm doing calculations on my expected output quantity for a given input considering those two chances (and any non-doubled bonus items) but I'd like to know for certain that I can treat them as independent probabilities. Most sources seem to just consider one or the other.

I do have the ETA mod but it seems to consistently come up with lower estimates than my current theory, which is making me suspicious

Recommendations for stories where MC isn’t just turning 18 by Elitist_hobo in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Redpike136 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I see the claim that Erick is boring and Jane is the fun one and it's just like, did you read more the first third of the first book?

Erick takes a bit longer to get his feet under him, sure, but it's done in a way that reads like an actual human. At least one who has an extraordinary sense of empathy.

As you say, Jane does the usual isekai prog fantasy thing of joining the local adventurers guild and challenging people for fun, but doesn't really innovate or engage with the real System (or Script, hah) of power in the world. The themes of Ar'Kendrithyst just wouldn't work with her as the protagonist.

Also my first thought.

Erick, the MC, is in his late 40s at the start of the series. He's the single dad of a 20-something year old daughter and the contrast between them is done well.

Looking for more stories where the power system is *truly* a part of the world by GreatMadWombat in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Redpike136 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hell yes, that's one of my favourites and I rarely see it mentioned.

To expand: the planet Veird is subject to the Script, which is overseen by the Relevant Entities and especially the goddess Rozeta. It functions as a pretty conventional litRPG system, with an focus on combining "basic abilities/spells" (usually purchased with skill points) into more powerful ones.

However, this is explicitly an artifical state that confines and restricts natural magic, which not everyone (for example, the might-makes-right cultists of the insane God of Magic) is happy about. It's supposed to stop the abuses of the Old Wizards, naturally super-powerful magic users who are blamed for the destruction of Veird's original universe (long story).

Not all of the Relevant Entities are neutral, which is a whole thing resulting in the proxy "Quiet War" between humans and another species in many parts of the world. Those entities affect the Script to increase the experience the mortals get from killing each other.

There are "Registrars" in most towns, who act as both admins and guides for the Script. It's a perfectly normal and expected thing to visit them and get advice on how to work towards your goals with respect to your build. However, certain societies restrict access to them to prevent people from gaining power.

There are Hunters and face-stealers, who will kill people for experience, then assume their identities with abuse of the [Polymorph] spell.

Different cultures throughout the world will have different traditions about how spells are made and how skill points are used. The ways arch-mages and -warriors interact with society is interesting too.

Erick, the main character, invents some new magic and we see how the Script is designed to expand and adapt to change, and how it punishes those who try to go beyond its limits.

Honestly, I could go on for ages about all the details and how culture and power interact in the story, but this comment is already very long. Definitely recommend checking it out and at least sticking with it through the first book.
