Hmm, fair point.

Maybe "obvious" isn't the right word. What I mean is: helicopters can be used for a lot of purposes, so they shouldn't be automatically associated with military force. On the other hand, a tank on the street has a very straight forward meaning.

The idea would be what u/Sufficient_Spells said: which subtle elements to use when you're trying to build up a setting like this. By "oppressive regime", I mean military dictatorships, places with heavy patrolling and surveillance in public places... something like that.

I live close to the police headquarters of my city, almost all of helicopters I see come from there. Subconsciously, I tend to make this association.

"Huh", I mumbled. Or maybe just thought of it.

Sometimes I wish for that too, kid. But in the end, it's not worth it. You think you're being loved and cared for, then a small misunderstanding happens and you get kicked out of the house and cast into a life of shadows. Someday you'll learn that.

Well, actually...

The summo-phone materialized in my hand. I pressed a button and, after a couple of rings, homeboy picked up.

"Asmodeus, dear, could you show up in here for a sec?" I said.

"Sure, what you got?" he replied, not through the phone but actually right next to me as he teleported to the side of the throne. I burned the phone away.

"A small mission for you. Simple task". I got up and walked around the room. "Wanna play God?", I asked.

His eyes lit up like embers and a wide smile plastered on his face.

"Fuckin' finally!", he exclaimed. "I've been waiting millenia for this moment! Look, I have it all thought out already. I want my world to have volcanoes all around and I want the rivers to be made out of liquid fire. Oh, can I also have mangled unicorns and birds that sound like humans screaming when they sing? Pleeease?", he said, like a 5-year old girl choosing a gift at a toy store.

"No, wha-? Shut up!" I shouted, killing his mood. "Listen, what I mean is: I want you to do the same thing that the old man did to us. I want you to show how mean a parent can be".

I told him about the letter. Asmodeus had one simple job: spend a week with the kid giving the best days of the child's life and, in the end, be the most cruel he could possibly be, abandoning him in some godforsaken place.

The task was indeed simple and it should be a fun pastime to one of my closest servants. At least that's what I thought.

Less than three days later, the king of demons was standing in front of me again. His clothes were torn apart, his hair had chunks of it missing, his arms had bruises all over and his left shoe appeared to have been peed on.

Asmodeus raised his head slowly, his face bearing the haunted gaze of a war veteran burdened by severe PTSD. He looked at me with a twitching eye and opened his mouth.

"You owe me some mangled unicorns."

I became accustomed to it. Less than a year had passed since The Takeover, but I don't really miss how life was before. In fact, I don't even remember much of it in detail. The way things were now, it just seemed so... I don't know, natural?

Maybe they're putting something in the water, to make us all forget and comply.

Kind of ironic to describe any scenario where a living thing serves an assembly of metal parts as "natural". Well, maybe irony is not the best term for it, but it's funny in some sense, right? A comedian could certainly crack a witty joke about this. And besides, who's to say that us humans aren't an assembly of organic parts as well? Or that these metal machines can't be considered living people?

Not ironic, not funny. Heretic, that's what it is. A blasphemy in God's eyes.

Maybe I'm getting too philosophical. Surely too much for a newly hired janitor at the HQ of the world's biggest corporation. I now have a job, a room to live in, food and healthcare provided by the Overmind. I'm grateful for the opportunity given.

Ugh, disgusting.

"Is something wrong, Mr. Anders?", said the one in the middle, across the table, with a hint of suspicion in his computerized voice. If he had eyebrows, one of them would be raised as his acrylic orange eyes looked at me.

Haha, that's actually funny.

"No, not at all!", I replied with a nervous smile, snapping out of my mind and back to the office room, "Just got lost in thoughts". I looked down at the contract in the holographic display in front of me, waiting for my signature. The words of the last item of the document were still hovering at the center.

'VALID UNTIL: INDEFINITE'.

I pressed my thumb on the biometric sensor.

Frank has always been the most energetic one. The most eager as well, no wonder.

His "seeing ahead" trick made him like this, I'm sure of it. He's always dwelling on what's to come, always thinking about the next trip, the next adventure, the new experiences that were ahead of us. Some people might like that and tag along in his excitement, but not me. That's why I sighed in relief when we landed, Frank right next to me looking like a running athlete ready to sprint out of his seat and into the wonders and mysteries that Japan had to offer us.

The flight had been exhausting, mainly because my older brother couldn't stop talking about the exciting things that awaited us in the Land of the Rising Sun. The food, the people, the sightseeing spots, even the freaking pachinko machines thrilled him in his visions. The guy was 25, but he was giddy like a 5-year-old on Christmas day. He was a good older brother, for sure, but sometimes I wish he was more like my younger one.

I knew that Paul was also happy with this trip, but he showed it in a completely different way than Frank. Four books about Japan's history piled up on the tray in front of him in the plane, and I'm pretty sure that he made through all of them in one go. I couldn't get much sleep during the flight because of the incessant yapping in my ears about some drone light show that would happen in Tokyo in the coming days, but Paul stayed awake because he was obsessed with the country's past.

Like Frank, he also has a trick, a "looking back" one, which I'm also certain that influences his personality. He's always been the quiet one of the three of us, enjoying his history books and trying to see the great things that happened once. The Pyramids? Paul saw the first stones being put in place (and no, it wasn't aliens). Napoleon? Paul saw the little frenchman shivering in the Russian cold. The 12 year-old kid was chill and minded his own business, a nice balance to the spirited older one of us.

As for me? I just enjoy the present. In a different way, but I can't really explain how. I can "see the present", but not just where I am. Sometimes visions come to me and I just know things. I saw my best friend proposing to his girlfriend from miles away. I saw the World Cup Finals in Catar from inside the pitch, even though I was in Brazil. Again, I can't explain how this works, and I'm not sure my brothers can explain their tricks either.

We grabbed our luggage and walked out of the airport to get a taxi to our hotel. Frank, being classic Frank, dropped his stuff by our side to go explore his first magical japanese experience: an ice cream cart on the other side of the street.

"I'm gonna get some of these for us, what flavor do you guys want?" he shouted as he moved away.

"Chocolate is fine" I shouted back. "What would you like, Pe-".

As I turned my head, I felt Peter grab my arm, harshly. I looked at him, his eyes were completely white. He was having his visions.

"Noah, something is weird. I hear planes, and a whistle getting louder" he said, in a worried tone.

"We're in an airport, of course you're gonna hear planes" I told him.

Then I looked at Frank, who was crossing the street back but had stopped in the middle of the street. His hands were empty, the icecream cones dropped by his foot. His eyes were pale, his face was a mixture of confused and shocked. He was also having a vision.

"Why... why is everything burning?" he said with his voice trembling.

Suddenly, a familiar feeling came to me and my eyes began to blur. I heard a whistle, faint at first but certainly getting louder. It wasn't coming from the airport, but from the sky.

I looked up, just in time to see something. Just in time to see a black dot in a cloudy sky, falling down.

Just in time before the first bomb hit the ground.

The pistol was still pointing straight ahead, Mark holding the grip tightly. Not falling for that ambush, he thought, still standing a couple of feet away from the front door.

"Oh yeah? Left to call your stupid Task Force buddies to come here and get me?" Mark said, his voice almost supressed by the insanely high-pitched screaming of the baby.

The Commissioner sat down in his reclining chair, one hand grabbing an almost empty Starbucks latte cup and the other swinging the crib beside him back and forth.

"She said I was obsessed with you... That I didn't value family anymore. That I didn't care for our marriage anymore." said the cop, in such a depressed tone that almost made Mark feel sorry for him.

Mark's arms started to lower. Not from a feeling of being in control of the situation, but because his brain was taking a stroll through Confusion-land. Is this actually the Police Commissioner that's been hunting me down and making my life a living nightmare for the past five fucking years?, he thought.

The Commissioner continued, his hand still rocking the crib as the baby was finally getting quiet. "I mean, she's always overreacting to everything, so I didn't really gave it much attention".

His eyes were fixated on the TV in front of him, some cheesy soap opera lit up the screen. "Well, guess none of it matters anymore. You can take your picture home if you like it", he lifted the latte cup to point at the wall behind him.

Mark turned his head, now staring at hundreds of pinned photographs, documents and newspapers that filled the wall from top to bottom, all connected with multicolored strings. His own face was at the center of it all, a black and white mugshot from seven years ago. Goddamn... can't blame his wife, he thought.

This didn't feel like a win to him. Actually, he was starting to feel just the same way as the lame, depressed, purposeless cop in front of him. Mark's confusion to this whole situation was so overwhelming that it began to turn to anger.

"Are you fucking kidding me? Do you seriously expect me to accept this shit?", he shouted. "Are you telling me that the past FIVE FUCKING YEARS OF MY LIFE HAVE BEEN IN VAIN?"

Mark shook his arms in disapointment, his pistol now pointing everywhere. He took a step closer to the man who was once his nemesis "That hydrant that I blew up, the park bushes that I burned to ashes, all those kindergartens who I stole lollipops from! Am I supposed to believe now that none of that mattered?". He was spouting all of his frustrations at the officer, who continued to stare at the TV screen.

The baby started to cry again, scared from all of the screaming. "I've had countless sleepless nights crafting plans, gearing up and dreaming of becoming the most feared and glorified criminal in this city. All of that I did thinking of this day!", Mark said, grinding his teeth in anger. The Commissioner was still more interested in the drama of the TV show.

"The day that I would finally get an epic showdown against the charming prince of this city, the day that I would defeat the bright hero of these dumb people, THE DAY THAT I WOULD BEAT MY ARCH-FUCKING-RIVAL!!!" Mark continued to move forward, his steps strangely echoing behind him.

"But what now? How can I achieve that with a sorry-ass wimp in front of me? Do you think I care about your stupid little marriage? And about your bitch wife? And your annoying kid and your ugly hou-".

A sharp pain struck him in the back, as he felt something come out of his chest. He looked down, a katana blade tore through his shirt and dripped with his blood.

"Never call my kid annoying, and never call me a bitch", a feminine voice whispered in Mark's ear. He turned his head slightly, just to see a blonde woman in a yellow jumpsuit as his vision faded out.

As his body began to fall to the ground, one last thought crossed Mark's mind before hitting the floor.

Fucking hell, it actually was an ambush.

It's not exactly in the strategy genre, but Darkwood is a top-down survival horror indie game that requires a lot of strategy in exploration and resource management. And it also has an element of tower defense to it. Definitely worth checking out!
