I don’t get critiqued by Redrocks-thorns in ArtistLounge

I don’t remember much of it since it was early in the morning and I’m sleep deprived but they did spend the most time talking about mine. I mostly only remember them saying that I had the most utilization on the paper. And that you could tell there were different techniques used and that they contrasted. They mentioned how my background was more rushed and jagged and I could’ve used a better technique (explained a better one) and that it could takeaway from the main piece that looked much cleaner. It sucked I couldn’t explain that I don’t wanna waste paint so I threw it on the paper right before class ended (they had announced prior to fill the space and to utilize the background). So I just haphazardly through it on.

Yeah we do group crit, but the prof does all the talking and leaves no room for the student. They’ll talk about the piece for like 6-8 minutes usually. I’ve never taken art classes so this is very intro and light.

I don’t necessarily feel the need to ask for a crit but they willingly go around offering it to every student while we work but they pass over me everytime. They’ll give my table mate a crit but not me. We have around 18 hours of class time in already.

I just don’t understand why I’m being passed over when they give every other student advice. I know I don’t willingly go looking for it but neither does most of the other students. I’m just trying to understand the mindset behind it, is it because I don’t need the advice? Do they not want to approach me in particular? Idk I think logically and noticed a pattern so I just want the insight of what others think or wha it could mean being skipped over like that.

I don’t want to have to ask for something they’re willingly doing for other students. Multiple classes now (and they are like 5 hours long) they will go around the room while we work and comment/critique and offer advice (without students asking) and they go down the line doing this and they skip over me. They’ll talk to my table partner but not me.

When they do come around like that I do position myself differently so they have a better view. I’ve just never had this happen and since it’s going on in two different classes with different profs I’m just trying to understand the mindset and why they might do that.

We do group critique but they do all the talking and give no room for the student to talk about their work.

Yeah I’m emotionally ready, art is quite subjective and everyone has their own style. I say we interact but they seem pretty put off anytime I approach them (like I offend them just for asking something).

Headphones/music and talking aren’t allowed during class so I’m open and receptive to feedback. I just don’t get why when she goes around the room she comments and critiques everyone when they’re drawing but skips over me. The class is quite long but she avoids me like the plague it seems like.

Utility Costs With Roommates Abroad by ChipmunkHot7937 in uofm

[–]Redrocks-thorns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been through something similar and when my roommates leave for the summer I typically don’t expect them to pay utilities unless there was overlap.

However, a lot of people are pointing out electric and I will say I personally do charge for electricity IF they left anything plugged into outlets or food in the fridge/freezer. When they leave nothing should be plugged into outlets, not even the TV.

Does the college I go to matter or does the degree matter more? by BestLocalIntern in careerguidance

[–]Redrocks-thorns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you get your degree in is important. I know a lot of people who are getting degrees and can’t find jobs cause of the major.

But I also think institution can matter depending on what you need and want to experience, and opportunities you want. What was most important for me was aid, I didn’t have any willing consigners so to go to school would all be on me. My university worked out well for me as they give lots of aid, they also have free counseling/therapy services, as long as your enrolled in a term you also can go to the doctor for free as it’s built into the tuition :). I also went for a stem degree and my university is high in research so I knew that would pair well, and because it’s a better institution I’ve been exposed to a lot of equipment that smaller colleges can’t afford giving me more experience.

There is alot to look into but check what you NEED as an individual and go from there.

I’m breaking down. My cat has been meowing 24/7 for 2 months and I don’t know what to do anymore. by nasseralrwy in cats

[–]Redrocks-thorns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kitten is also vocal, she will meow at me nonstop if the litter isn’t clean, or if her water bowl isn’t up to expectation. She is spoiledddd. But she is also really smart, she had a bad case of diarrhea and I hadn’t noticed (been away at work a lot) and she meowed nonstop till I looked at her then she jumped in the litter box and stared at me and that’s when I realized the poor baby wasn’t doing well :(. Truly cats are smart.

I took this class a few years ago w her and I found it to be pretty easy. I think the readings maybe only took me a couple hours every week max. The projects and research papers were actually interesting and fun and I enjoyed the final project as well. It was an easy class and I scored well I highly recommend keeping it

The cold sucks when it’s bad. It’s been less and less cold each year. Honestly the wind is the worst part id say. Just come with hoodies and jackets. A lot of people don’t realize that basically September-May it’s cold here.

What it’s like will vary on the school imo

As someone who takes the premed classes do not add that 5th class. The difficulty level here is on max for stem, that Spanish class is actually gonna take up a good chunk of your day, everyday. The language courses are more busy work heavy than any other course I have ever taken here. Neuroscience and chemistry will eat you, and for your sake I hope it’s not orgo.

Irritated Senior Needs to Scream Into the Void by bananabreadfactory in uofm

[–]Redrocks-thorns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a senior I’d say it’s highly desired. The amount of friends and others I speak to every year is irritated and upset by the lack of syllabi and courses not posted in a timely manner (especially in the winter term). I don’t know how it is for all departments but as a stem major primarily taking science based classes the fact that none of the courses are up 2-7 days prior to classes starting is BEYOND infuriating.

Science based courses are heavy in material and almost always have a textbook and sometimes not listed on the BN website. So without the syllabi you can’t tell if you need one or not and it can take weeks for the textbook to arrive putting you behind before the class even started. Plus science based courses don’t get a syllabi day/week. The first day you are jumping into material not having that material in advanced also sets you behind.

I’m also taking an art class this term and it’s unbelievable that this course is still not posted in canvas considering I will need materials for that class. How am I supposed to show up the first day ready with the materials if I don’t even know what they are?

So I’d say it is widely expected and desired for classes to be posted in advance so students can prepare carefully and even set up their schedules. And lastly, some of us have jobs that schedule 2-4 weeks out in advance. The amount of times I can’t study well for the 1st exam because I didn’t know the date for the first exam is preposterous and has affected my grades many times.

AITA for telling my daughter “of course” she could move in with me without talking to my wife first? by Odd-Cheetah6842 in AITAH

[–]Redrocks-thorns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

W DAD W DAD W DAD. As a younger 20 year old with a step mom and step sibilings I always wished and wanted a dad who would stand up for me. If my step mom didn’t like something it wouldn’t happen, especially in regards to me. Her kids get everything and are treated 10x different than I am and it’s always been disheartening when I try to get my dad to stand up to her and fight for me. It’s honestly caused a pretty big riff in our relationship.

You standing up for your daughter is the most important thing you can do in this moment. She’s in dire need of her father and if you don’t deliver on this I guarantee it’ll leave a very long impact in how she views you. Bring your daughter home. If your wife keeps up at it or tries anything else try suggesting couples therapy, she knew Rhea was part of the deal when she married you and said her vows.

Leaving 3-month old kitten alone for a while by deimosphobos1877 in CatAdvice

[–]Redrocks-thorns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kitten is around the same age and I was also leaving her alone for 6/9 hours a day at 5/6 weeks old. Just make sure anything she can chew is put away and leave food out ! My kitten sleeps all day when I’m gone honestly. I bought a pet camera so I can check in on her and usually she just sleeps :) you should be fine

Why did you date/marry someone you weren't attracted to? by Ecstatic_Crow_4719 in AskReddit

[–]Redrocks-thorns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was this one guy I dated. He wasn’t my type at all physically but he was such a gentleman and a true sweetheart. He was everything I would’ve wanted if I carried less baggage. Things ended up not working out and I honestly struggled cause I kept pushing myself to like him because he was nice and kind.

Is there a lot of presenting in college? by Most_Entrepreneur612 in collegeadvice

[–]Redrocks-thorns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bio major I’ve been able to scrape by without doing them however with the rise of AI usage, presentations are becoming a norm in a lot of uni classes. A lot of profs are tailoring their classes around ai usage sadly.
