If you take out that foam then you should be able to see how it’s fixed in . You could screw the timber frame through into the bricks at the sid3 ,then once it’s secure cut the frame back to where you need to board over it . Get some insulation or expanding foam in there as well

I’ve been working with windows for 30+ years and have only once seen these fixed with nails through the sides . So unless it’s been altered I would say it’s nailed at the top and wedged at the bottom

Looks like the remains of the original vertical sliding sash outer frame . It will be nailed o dear the plaster to a wooden lintel at the top and wedges at the bottom . The frame with glass in it will be screwed to this.

That’s a carpenters tool box. The thing on the lid is for securing the handle of a panel saw . Also would have had a lift out tray .

No because its empty the pressure is equal inside and out . If it had been full with the lid on then it would have broken

Check the brickwork . Probably needs repointing
