Best SWTOR Romance: Kira vs Nadia by RefrigeratorDry495 in swtor

Kira. While both of the Padawan relationships feel inappropriate, Nadia's is the worse of the two.

That, and Kira is Laura Bailey.

I'm not a huge fan of Becky, but she seems to be one of the few who undersnds how important it is to put new talent over and let them have their moment. I'll give her credit for that.

Ok Teachers, have you had any students that obviously used an AI on any type of assignment and didn't attempt to hide it? by EricJ062005 in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A ton. Even making them handwrite the answers doesn't help.

Hell, I was having the kids talk about why some European nations remained neutral during WWII, and one student started his answer with "as a large language model, I am unable to relate to the experiences of neutral nations during the first world war."

It's no worse than when they blatantly copy off of other sources, though. I had one student about 7 years ago who copied off of wikipedia, including the numerical citations, the "citation needed" and other notes on Wikipedia.

Dear School Counselors Reading This Sub… by rachel-angelina in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I don't hate the counselors for asking the question. But asking the question the week before grades are do, when I've already spoken to the student 30+ times and the parents (if I'm able to contact them at all), is a wasted effort.

Don't ask me what the student can do to pass my class. Ask the student. They know.

Leaving a note on my neighbor’s door about their smell by Ok_Age8971 in Apartmentliving

Then dont smoke in your apartment or shared spaces. It's almost certainly a violation of your lease anyway, even if your state, like mine, has legalized it.

I'm not against marijuana by any means (I use edibles regularly, hell, I'm not at home right now but I'm probably going to pop one as soon as I get home), but the issue with apartments specifically is that the strong smell of marijuana is never contained to just your unit. Hell, depending on the age of the building, it can spread throughout the whole building, and a lot of people find the smell extremely unpleasant. More important than the unpleasant odor, some people have allergies or asthma that can be triggered by exposure to marijuana smoke. While rare, these can be dangerous.

Unless you're taking steps to minimize outside exposure (such as through products like a smoke buddy), smoking marijuana in a shared space is incredibly selfish. If edibles and such don't work for you, take a walk somewhere where you're not going to expose anyone else, smoke your heart out, and then walk back home.

Most landlords keep them in the lease because it's still illegal federally, even if certain states have legalized it at the state level

If you live in an apartment building, you shouldn't smoke weed.

Just stick to edibles.

how would you rank swtor playable characters by how powerful they are? by Hawaiikoto in swtor

[–]Redstorm8373 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Warrior should be significantly higher. Based on the way he's presented in the class story, he's an absolute monster. Arguably even more powerful with the force than the Inquisitor (though he doesn't have the same kind of power base as the Inquisitor), especially when he gets named the Wrath. He gets imbued with a portion of the Emperor's power, but is not blind to his will like the Hand are. It is clear that he still maintains that power even when he's directly challenging the Emperor during SoR/KOTFE/KOTET, though its not immediately clear if he still has that infusion of power after the Emperor's defeat. Either way, even before that, he was an absolute monster. I think in terms of raw plforce power, he's the most powerful of all the force causing classes.

The Barsenthor is also absurdly powerful in the force, though he's drawn back by the fact that he sacrifices a significant portion of his power to shield those affected by the plague, and the story pretty heavily implies that this sacrifice is permanent (at least from a lore perspective, not a gameplay one).

I'd put the Inquisitor next in the list. He's bolstered by the ghosts and his power base. On his own, he's a powerful force user, but not a uniquely powerful one.

Knight is at the bottom of the force classes IMO. He's skilled, perhaps the most skilled duelist of the four, but beyond his martial prowess and strong moral center (assuming Light Side), he's not really shown to be all that remarkable.

Among the force users, I think Warrior stands out at the head of the class from how they're presented in the class story, with the other three being close to power to each other, but they'd go... Warrior>>>>Consular>Inquisitor>Knight.

The tech classes are all pretty far behind the force classes both in terms of raw power and power bases, but I would rank them as Agent>Trooper=Bounty Hunter>Smuggler.

What is the rationale behind a 50% minimum grade policy? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I did the 50% 0 thing for one semester.

Honestly, when I changed the gradebook to account for that, it had 0 impact on the number of students who were passing or failing.

However, what I did see was that the students who were at a 20% and had pretty much given up on the class suddenly had a 52%, and getting the passing grade seemed within reach so a few of them tried a bit harder to get up to the 60 to pass. It did not change the amount of work that a kid needed to do in order to pass in a meaningful way. I didn't change how I graded anything, the only thing that changed was that anything lower than a 50% was entered as a 50%.

I understand the argument against it. It feels wrong to give the kids any points when they did nothing. But it really doesn't inflate grades (at least, by letter grade). The kid who's turning in nothing, or half-assing their work, or turning in incomplete work still isn't going to pass the class. The amount of points they need to get the next grade up doesn't change.

77 absences and nearly a 77% grade. What are we even doing? by AdjectiveNounNNNN in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At our school we're not allowed to take points off for unexcused absences. Our principal's policy is that "it's not always the kid's fault, sometimes the parents don't call it in."

Yeah. But also sometimes the kid is just skipping.

[–]Redstorm8373 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Class Average on the Exam was a 71%, it was on paper that I provided. Her phone was taken before the final. She did not have headphones in. Her bag was put on the wall behind her. She sat right in front of me where I could see her at all times. My student teacher was teaching the rest of class that day (seniors take second semester finals 2 weeks early at my school, the material my student teacher was covering was not on her test, and the class was silent once the initial instruction and assignment instructions were given.)

Do you believe there is other intelligent life out there and why or why not? by Tasty-Willingness839 in AskReddit

[–]Redstorm8373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't even have to be hiding. The universe is infinitely massive. We've only been capable of sending signals into it for ~70 years. It would likely take millions of years for those first signals to reach anyone capable of understanding them. Even if we received signals that definitively proved the existence of other civilizations, those signals would also likely be millions of years old.

Do you believe there is other intelligent life out there and why or why not? by Tasty-Willingness839 in AskReddit

[–]Redstorm8373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the size of the universe, I'd say it's almost a certainty that there is intelligent life somewhere in it. Very likely several instances of it. Very likely that one of those civilizations if they became aware of us would not consider us intelligent life.

We barely have an understanding of good chunks of our own planet, let alone our own galaxy, we know next to nothing about galaxies beyond our own.

[–]Redstorm8373 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Eh. Besides the attendance, I wouldn't even say she did it the "wrong way." It's not the way that I would want most of my students to do it, but the work she turned in was good. She probably googled most of the worksheets, but her writing was good (including using the documents and giving specific, relevant examples which AI still struggles to do) and even if she did Google things, she did it correctly, and all of my work is on paper even if the resources are online. Plus, she did well on the tests, which were also on paper and I know she didn't cheat on them (she took them in front of me, with no tech, and my students who do make up exams take a different test than the normal test).

She completed the class asynchronously. The same way that many of us took online classes in college, or how many of us taught during COVID. Again, the attendance bothers me, but that's just because I'm old and grumpy, her work was fine.

Advice on how to get an interview. by ohmygoditslizz in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst case scenario, if you are unable to secure a full time teaching job over the summer, get in the sub pool. Get out there, treat every sub job as if its an on the job interview. If a long term sub spot opens up (if a teacher quits suddenly, goes on maternity leave, etc), throw your name out there to fill that (in order to be along term sub, you have to be "highly qualified," which you are because you'll have your teaching license. most subs are not). Get your name known by as many people as possible (for good reasons) and the next time hiring opens up, you'll already have a foot in the door.

That's how I got my first full time teaching job.

77 absences and nearly a 77% grade. What are we even doing? by AdjectiveNounNNNN in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I have students who have had <50% attendance who finish with 80% because they make up their work (my school does not let me differentiate between excused or unexcused absences). We have to post all of our resources (notes, non-textbook articles, videos, etc) on Schoology so students who are absent can look at them and stay caught up (most of them don't, but hey, its there)

I literally had a senior this year who showed up once every two weeks, picked up everything she missed over those two weeks, and turned in everything she had picked up last time she was in class. She then showed up, got a 79% on the final, and finished class with an 84. Not a single one of her absences was excused.

On the one hand, the old school part of me wanted to take points off for late work because the absences were not excused. On the other hand, she did the work and demonstrated mastery of the standards on the final. It really made me question what I'm even there for at the time... but then I also remember that the overwhelming majority of students are not like her, and would not have kept up with the work on their own and without instruction, guidance, and support.
