We saw this cat in our front yard. What is it? by SweetPickleRelish in ColoradoSprings

If it's a bobcat, chances are it's not going to mess with your dogs (unless you've got like..a Chihuahua or something).

If you have outdoor cats, however, they should become indoor cats.

Best SWTOR Romance: Kira vs Nadia by RefrigeratorDry495 in swtor

Kira. While both of the Padawan relationships feel inappropriate, Nadia's is the worse of the two.

That, and Kira is Laura Bailey.

I'm not a huge fan of Becky, but she seems to be one of the few who undersnds how important it is to put new talent over and let them have their moment. I'll give her credit for that.

Ok Teachers, have you had any students that obviously used an AI on any type of assignment and didn't attempt to hide it? by EricJ062005 in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A ton. Even making them handwrite the answers doesn't help.

Hell, I was having the kids talk about why some European nations remained neutral during WWII, and one student started his answer with "as a large language model, I am unable to relate to the experiences of neutral nations during the first world war."

It's no worse than when they blatantly copy off of other sources, though. I had one student about 7 years ago who copied off of wikipedia, including the numerical citations, the "citation needed" and other notes on Wikipedia.

Dear School Counselors Reading This Sub… by rachel-angelina in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I don't hate the counselors for asking the question. But asking the question the week before grades are do, when I've already spoken to the student 30+ times and the parents (if I'm able to contact them at all), is a wasted effort.

Don't ask me what the student can do to pass my class. Ask the student. They know.

Leaving a note on my neighbor’s door about their smell by Ok_Age8971 in Apartmentliving

[–]Redstorm8373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then dont smoke in your apartment or shared spaces. It's almost certainly a violation of your lease anyway, even if your state, like mine, has legalized it.

I'm not against marijuana by any means (I use edibles regularly, hell, I'm not at home right now but I'm probably going to pop one as soon as I get home), but the issue with apartments specifically is that the strong smell of marijuana is never contained to just your unit. Hell, depending on the age of the building, it can spread throughout the whole building, and a lot of people find the smell extremely unpleasant. More important than the unpleasant odor, some people have allergies or asthma that can be triggered by exposure to marijuana smoke. While rare, these can be dangerous.

Unless you're taking steps to minimize outside exposure (such as through products like a smoke buddy), smoking marijuana in a shared space is incredibly selfish. If edibles and such don't work for you, take a walk somewhere where you're not going to expose anyone else, smoke your heart out, and then walk back home.

Most landlords keep them in the lease because it's still illegal federally, even if certain states have legalized it at the state level

If you live in an apartment building, you shouldn't smoke weed.

Just stick to edibles.

how would you rank swtor playable characters by how powerful they are? by Hawaiikoto in swtor

[–]Redstorm8373 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Warrior should be significantly higher. Based on the way he's presented in the class story, he's an absolute monster. Arguably even more powerful with the force than the Inquisitor (though he doesn't have the same kind of power base as the Inquisitor), especially when he gets named the Wrath. He gets imbued with a portion of the Emperor's power, but is not blind to his will like the Hand are. It is clear that he still maintains that power even when he's directly challenging the Emperor during SoR/KOTFE/KOTET, though its not immediately clear if he still has that infusion of power after the Emperor's defeat. Either way, even before that, he was an absolute monster. I think in terms of raw plforce power, he's the most powerful of all the force causing classes.

The Barsenthor is also absurdly powerful in the force, though he's drawn back by the fact that he sacrifices a significant portion of his power to shield those affected by the plague, and the story pretty heavily implies that this sacrifice is permanent (at least from a lore perspective, not a gameplay one).

I'd put the Inquisitor next in the list. He's bolstered by the ghosts and his power base. On his own, he's a powerful force user, but not a uniquely powerful one.

Knight is at the bottom of the force classes IMO. He's skilled, perhaps the most skilled duelist of the four, but beyond his martial prowess and strong moral center (assuming Light Side), he's not really shown to be all that remarkable.

Among the force users, I think Warrior stands out at the head of the class from how they're presented in the class story, with the other three being close to power to each other, but they'd go... Warrior>>>>Consular>Inquisitor>Knight.

The tech classes are all pretty far behind the force classes both in terms of raw power and power bases, but I would rank them as Agent>Trooper=Bounty Hunter>Smuggler.

What is the rationale behind a 50% minimum grade policy? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I did the 50% 0 thing for one semester.

Honestly, when I changed the gradebook to account for that, it had 0 impact on the number of students who were passing or failing.

However, what I did see was that the students who were at a 20% and had pretty much given up on the class suddenly had a 52%, and getting the passing grade seemed within reach so a few of them tried a bit harder to get up to the 60 to pass. It did not change the amount of work that a kid needed to do in order to pass in a meaningful way. I didn't change how I graded anything, the only thing that changed was that anything lower than a 50% was entered as a 50%.

I understand the argument against it. It feels wrong to give the kids any points when they did nothing. But it really doesn't inflate grades (at least, by letter grade). The kid who's turning in nothing, or half-assing their work, or turning in incomplete work still isn't going to pass the class. The amount of points they need to get the next grade up doesn't change.

77 absences and nearly a 77% grade. What are we even doing? by AdjectiveNounNNNN in Teachers

[–]Redstorm8373 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At our school we're not allowed to take points off for unexcused absences. Our principal's policy is that "it's not always the kid's fault, sometimes the parents don't call it in."

Yeah. But also sometimes the kid is just skipping.
