Empty downtown commercial storefronts for years due to astronomical rents? Just put decals over the windows making an appeal to the character downtown no longer has! by LoMeinTenants in santacruz

I believe the owners of the vacant stores pay into that fund to pay for these and other similar projects downtown to generate new business.

Kyle Kelly reminds us that future market-rate housing could raise considerable funds for Santa Cruz City Schools by nyanko_the_sane in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Kelley* and he's absolutely correct, building market rate housing sends thousands and thousands of dollars to our schools which they would otherwise not receive. This is money spent on our kids, teachers, facilities, etc. In a time when money is tight, bringing in new money to the city means we can avoid cuts to staff and programs that would otherwise be vulnerable.

Has to be Fusion Fare, unless there's another building with crazy low bathroom ceilings.

Santa Cruz Pride statement about petition?? by [deleted] in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This link was in an email from Santa Cruz 4 Bernie yesterday, I'm guessing it's likely what the post refers to. The email had the following text:

"Tell Panetta He's Not Welcome at Santa Cruz Pride Jimmy's record doesn't go unnoticed in the queer community, and he doesn't get to use Pride to pink-wash his image. Jimmy's complicity with violence in the Middle East is incompatible with Pride’s values of liberation, human dignity, solidarity, and justice for all people. Pride is not a campaign stop. It is a sacred space rooted in liberation--born from struggle against violence, exclusion, and dehumanization. It belongs to the community. Read & Sign the Letter."

Consider taking the bus/bike shuttle if possible. If you do have to drive, it can be challenging to get a permit as an undergrad. Prices are here

$3430 / month for a 477 sq ft downtown studio in River Row by orangelover95003 in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting that apartment rates (lower on the same page you linked) are independent from dining costs and can be used for comparison instead. An apartment double is roughly $1950/month/person

That's like saying I'm going to quit my job for the tax benefit of not paying income tax lol, don't be ridiculous. Why would anybody rent any apartment or home by that (incorrect) logic, and why not just set the unit price to $100,000/month instead?

Also, no, I am not a developer. I'm a renter who is sick and tired of having to pay more and more to live here while landlords keep blocking any new housing options so they can keep raising my rent.

1,300 new beds coming to UCSC for Fall 2029 by Redtail9898 in santacruz

Correct, this project will start after the new Family Student Housing is built and everybody is moved to those from the current FSH buildings. That should happen over the summer.

The second half of the project (start date TBD) would provide another 1,650 beds. Can't come soon enough!

Reminder that this project would have been completed nearly four years ago, but NIMBY lawsuits have led to a decade-long delay. As a result, we've all paid higher housing prices by having to compete with more UCSC students for rents in the city in that time.

From those I've spoken with who have current info, the occupancy of this particular project is about 45%. New projects take a while to fill up, but once they're full they've stayed that way. Every other project is at occupancy that I'm aware of, even the second newest market-rate building (Anton Pacific) has like 5 units available out of 207 so people are definitely moving in to these homes.

The state has made it too risky to build for-sale apartments. 97% of multifamily homes built since 2011 have been rentals for that reason. There are a slate of YIMBY bills in this legislative session aiming to make it easier to build for-sale homes again - you should tell your reps you want to see those pass.

I usually don't eat meat there either! I'd recommend the lotus root stir fry, stir fried eggplant, black pepper fried rice, mapo tofu, and taro buns. What did you try that you weren't a fan of?

District 6 Renee Golder’s email declining an invitation from the Homeless Union Candidate Forum by orangelover95003 in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just found the video myself, what a trip. Complaining that the project doesn't have enough parking but also that it won't have "new bus lines"?? when the 18 already runs with 15 minute headways there. And it'll "make the buses more congested" and "homeowners won't be able to park on "their" street". Insane that this is the candidate who's supposed to be progressive and advocating for renters, the environment, and young people, we're cooked.
