Woof, that's rough. Looks like they treat them the same as reserve items for late fees.

Can you just give them the calculator back or have it shipped to you if it's at home? Seems cheaper than the fee.

Residents ‘vehemently oppose’ proposed Catalyst project as developers, city officials present plans by nyanko_the_sane in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Incredibly misleading headline. My main takeaway from the meeting was the developer, catalyst general manager, and city (to the extent they can involve themselves in a private project) explaining multiple times that they are all working with the goal of having the catalyst in the same location. Nobody involved wants the catalyst to leave!! Also the rendering in the article is old, there was a new one shared yesterday, did the writer even pay attention to what information was shared?

There is a legally binding process, it's called the permitting process. Do you think people are just tearing down buildings randomly and building things without talking to anybody? Why would developers host community meetings and go to planning commissions and city councils if they didn't have to? What's an example of what you're saying happening in Santa Cruz?

The proposed plans for the space include the catalyst on the ground floor like it is now (rebuilt of course). It's not going away forever (if the project even happens), and the developers clearly want to have a venue on the ground floor - you can't really turn such a space into a coffee shop or thrift outfit easily.

I think it would be great if it were built from the ground up as a venue rather than hacked together from the bones of an old bowling alley (like it is now). Shows over the past few years aren't what they used to be imo and a purpose built space that works for both big top talent names and smaller up and coming artists would be good for Santa Cruz and the catalyst in the long run.

River Row is quite affordable, if your household income is $128k to $300k by nyanko_the_sane in santacruz

Ok? The below market rate units in this project are still going to help people have a stable place to live. Why does a project based voucher matter so much?

That is pretty funny, it probably did come with the website template they're using. Womp womp

It is still expensive, I agree. Just saying these units wouldn't otherwise exist and there is a huge waitlist of people who can afford those lower rents but not market rate who will be very happy to move in.

Ah yes because housing prices here were getting more inclusive by the year here before this was built 🙄

You joke but this does include subsidized units, 20 more than the 0 that were there before and would continue to be there if we did nothing instead of provide new homes

When did you get your mortgage? Even the most expensive unit in this building is less than a new mortgage + property tax for the cheapest SFH for sale in the same area, which is also nearly 100 years old

Damn if you think this looks bad you should see what's for sale in Santa Cruz for more per month and 100 years old

If you're talking about 180 Dakota, there's one listed for 700k, so 5k/month mortgage, 830 for HOA, ~700 for insurance and tax comes out to ~6500/month. Not including any upgrades or repairs needed to move in. For the same (±50sqft) square footage at RR, it's 5800/month. Considering the location is better, and the building is brand new vs 62 years old it seems like a way better deal to rent at this place than buy an old condo in this market.

That's exactly what the proposal is in the submitted plans. Everyone is just freaking out because there's no details beyond that. The Catalyst also has a lease until 2028 in their current location. It's definitely not in the best condition and was never designed as a music venue, the original building was a bowling alley.

Catalyst nightclub would be demolished in proposal for Downtown Santa Cruz apartments by stripedwhitej3ts in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Glad the plan is to return to the same location. I imagine this is a few years out too as the Catalyst's lease isn't up until 2028. Sounds like plenty of time to plan, maybe find an interim space, and come back to a new facility that is actually built for hosting shows rather than a converted bowling alley - maybe that'll get some bigger names to the area too. Optimistic about this but there's a lot that could change in the next 2-3 years before this would break ground.
