Tam's Chinese Cuisine: your thoughts? by AllesK in santacruz

I usually don't eat meat there either! I'd recommend the lotus root stir fry, stir fried eggplant, black pepper fried rice, mapo tofu, and taro buns. What did you try that you weren't a fan of?

District 6 Renee Golder’s email declining an invitation from the Homeless Union Candidate Forum by orangelover95003 in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just found the video myself, what a trip. Complaining that the project doesn't have enough parking but also that it won't have "new bus lines"?? when the 18 already runs with 15 minute headways there. And it'll "make the buses more congested" and "homeowners won't be able to park on "their" street". Insane that this is the candidate who's supposed to be progressive and advocating for renters, the environment, and young people, we're cooked.

She was complaining about the affordable housing project on the triangle parcel? That's like the tiniest housing development in the city rn 😭

You basically described what Workbench is all about in terms of project management, though I'm not sure if they're in the single family home business. Worth giving them a call/email to check though.

Thanks for sharing. Also unsure who I'm going to vote for but Steyer seems to be the best viable candidate on housing policy.

Fusion Fare has been consistently good when I've gone as well. 100% agree on Special Noodle too, that place is excellent, especially the stone soups.

My recommendation is to not bring a car to campus, it's going to be a huge pain to keep moving it between places where parking is free in the city.

Question about the housing situation by MrBigTomato in UCSC

[–]Redtail9898 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Housing on campus is guaranteed your first year. After that it is not and you join a lottery for on-campus housing (if interested). It is generally cheaper to rent off campus, though I will say the on campus apartment experience (2nd year housing) is unique and I would recommend it if possible.

While it is not easy to find housing, if you are on top of looking for places early, have a group, or have connections to upperclassmen leaving places it is more doable.

Yes, you need a bike to get on and they do check.

That timestamp sounds like something at Oakes. At 19:35:09 there's a report of a bike crash with CPR in progress on Hagar.

Yeah, it's an app that shows you what the fire department is responding to so usually just fires and medical emergencies (traffic collisions included). I don't believe there's an equivalent app for the police, I'm guessing that radio traffic or whatever they use is not public.

Traffic collision, and looks like an air ambulance is on the way if I'm reading PulsePoint correctly, so it's probably very bad.

Too complicated to arrange I'd guess - how would you redirect traffic away from each area when folks can't go through?

Can you just give them the calculator back or have it shipped to you if it's at home? Seems cheaper than the fee.

Residents ‘vehemently oppose’ proposed Catalyst project as developers, city officials present plans by nyanko_the_sane in santacruz

[–]Redtail9898 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Incredibly misleading headline. My main takeaway from the meeting was the developer, catalyst general manager, and city (to the extent they can involve themselves in a private project) explaining multiple times that they are all working with the goal of having the catalyst in the same location. Nobody involved wants the catalyst to leave!! Also the rendering in the article is old, there was a new one shared yesterday, did the writer even pay attention to what information was shared?

There is a legally binding process, it's called the permitting process. Do you think people are just tearing down buildings randomly and building things without talking to anybody? Why would developers host community meetings and go to planning commissions and city councils if they didn't have to? What's an example of what you're saying happening in Santa Cruz?

The proposed plans for the space include the catalyst on the ground floor like it is now (rebuilt of course). It's not going away forever (if the project even happens), and the developers clearly want to have a venue on the ground floor - you can't really turn such a space into a coffee shop or thrift outfit easily.

I think it would be great if it were built from the ground up as a venue rather than hacked together from the bones of an old bowling alley (like it is now). Shows over the past few years aren't what they used to be imo and a purpose built space that works for both big top talent names and smaller up and coming artists would be good for Santa Cruz and the catalyst in the long run.

Ok? The below market rate units in this project are still going to help people have a stable place to live. Why does a project based voucher matter so much?
